' My invention relates to ribbon mecha-' nism for typewriting machines andits object, generally stated, is to provide improved mechanism of the class specified.
More specifically my invention has to do with the provision of improved mimeograph devices wherebythe use of the ribbon may be dispensed with at pleasure when it is desired to write a stencil or mimeograph sheet or for similar purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide .means for varying the normal position of the printing portion of a vibratory g ribbon in combination with means for vibrating said printing portion diiierent eX- tents from a plurality of normal positions.
To the above and other ends my invention consists in the features of construction, com:
binations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
While my invention may be adapted to various styles of writing machines I have shown it as applied to a Monarch typewriter. In the present instance I substitute for the usual stationary guide for the rib bon carrier, which guide is rigid on the frame, a two-piece guide, one piece pivoted on the other, said two-piece guide being associated with a novel form of ribbon carrier.

My invention will be more particularly explained in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical front to rear sectional view of a typewriting machine embodying my invention, so much only of the machine being shown as is necessary to a clear understanding of said invention. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view showing parts of the printing portion of a ribbon in the different positions to which the same may be moved in the operation of my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved ribbon carrier or vibrator. Further, means are provided for varying at will the normal rei lationshi between the o eratin lever and the actuating devices therefor, whereby the extent of movement of the operating lever and the consequent extent of movement of the ribbon carrier may be varied. As a rei sult the ribbon carrier may be moved variable extents from one normal position so as to present difl'erent fields of the ribbon pivoted universal bar frame, said frame ribbon carrier and also of part of the support for said guide. Fig. 5 is a sidr view partly in section showing the ribbon carrier and its guide and part of the actuating and supporting devices. Fig. 6 is a plan view partly in section of the mechanism for varying the actuating devices for the operating lever. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side view of a modified construction of ribbon carrier and operating lever.
As appears from Fig. 1 the main frame of the machine comprises a base portion 1 from which rise posts 2 supporting a top plate 3. Key levers i are fulcrumed on a plate 5 in rear of the base, each key lever being provided with a restoring spring 6 and being connected with a type bar (not struction and mounting. The type bars when actuated are adapted 'to be swung upward and rearward into cooperation with the front of a roller platen 7, diagrammatically illustrated herein. The platen is mounted on a carriage (not shown) which carrying a Universal bar 16 which underlies the key levers 4.
A ribbon 17 is wound on horizontal spools 18, one at each side of the machine above the top plate and forward of the platen. Each spool is supported on a vertical shaft 19 which carries at its lower end a beveled pinion 20 meshing with. a beveled pinion 21 carried at the forward end of a horizontal ions 27 and 28. The spool turning or ribbon feeding mechanism above described is like that of the Monarch typewriting machine, but any other suitable ribbon feeding mechanism may be employed if desired.
Midway between the ribbon spools the ribbon is threaded through a vibratory ribbon carrier or vibrator designated as a whole as 29 and best shown in Fig. 3. The head or upper portion of the ribbon carrier is or may beof ordinary construction comprising hooks 30 off-set laterally from the side arms 31 the inner edges whereof arebent to provide grooves 32. The ribbon passes from the hooks 3O behind the upper portions of the arms 31 and across the open space 33 be tween said arms. The depending part or stem of the ribbon carrier 29 is provided with a central vertical slot 34 which forms two strips or fingers 35. These strips are doubled back on themselves and the two plies or folds are The rear plies are bent or shaped to provide openings which frictionally hold cross pins 37 and 38 bridging the slot 34 and arranged one abovethe other and about it apart.
The ribbon carrier is supported and guided on a carrier guide which is best shown in Fig. 4. Said guide comprises two parts 39 and 40. The part 39 is provided with twoparallel upwardly extending fingers 41, the inner edges whereof are embraced by the grooves 32 in the ribbon carrier, the construction enabling the carrier to he slid up and down on the guide. The
lower side portions of the guide part 39 are bent rearwardly. forming cars 42 which embrace corresponding ears 43 pro ect1ng forwardly from the sides of the other guide part 40. This guide part is provided at its top with a pair of books 44 which fit over thetop edge of the frame plate 45. A headed screw 46 (Figs. 1 and 5) secures the lower end of theguide part 40 t0 the frame plate 45. Arranged between the head of this screw 46 and the guide part 40 is the usual cam member 47 which cooperates with the usual card-guide 48 shown in Fig. 1 only. The guide parts 39 and 40 are pivotally connected together by a pin or rod 49 which passes through the ears 42 and 43. The rod 49 also provides a bearing for the swinging card guide 48 which as shown-in Fig. 1 eX- tends upward between the two guide parts and in rear of the ribbon carrier. A spring 50 (Fig. 4) is coiled around the rod 49 and its ends co-act with the guide parts. 39 and 40 to maintain them in the normal relationship shown in Figs. 1 and 4 in which position stop faces 51 formed at the front of the ears 43 contact with the rear face of the part 39. By pressing rearward against the upper portions of the fingers 41 the spring 50 may be overcome and the guide part 39 swung about the pivotal center 49. Since the guide part 39 controls the ribbon carrier 29, the swinging movement of the guide part will be communicated to the ribbon carrier. The swinging movement of the ribbon carrier and guide part may also be caused. by pressure applied to the upper part of the ribbon carrier, as well as to the guide part 39. This pivotal movement of the ribbon carrier is to enable one or another of the cross pins 37 and 38 to be disconnected from the operating lever and the other cross pin to be connected therewith. The operating lever 52 is enlarged at its forward end and formed with a horizontal open-mouthed slot 53 in which the cross pins are adapted to engage. The operating lever is fulcrumed at 54 to a lug depending from the top plate 3. As shown in Fig; 1 the rear arm of the operating lever 52 is formed with an arcuate slot 56 which is engaged by a lateral pin 57 y secured to the top of a vertically-disposed link 58, the lower end of said link being pivotally connected with the arm 15 of the universal bar frame. It will be understood that when a key lever 4 is actuated the universal bar frame will be swung downward, lowering the link 58 and causing it to swing the operating lever 52 on its fulcrum so as to raise the ribbon carrier and the printing portion of the ribbon. It "ill be further understood that the extent of movement of the ribbon carrier may be varied by changing the position of the actuating pin 57 in the slot 56,
this being accomplished by swinging the link 58 about its pivotal connection with the arm 15. A draw spring 59 connects the links 14 and 58 and tends constantly to swing the link 58 rearward about its pivot. As is well understood the eccentric face (33 is employed when a uniform ribbon is in use, so as to automatically and progressively vary the throw of the ribbon carrier and obtain a crosswise feeding of the ribbon at the drawing, a two-color ribbon 17 is illustrated, said ribbon 17 being divided lengthwise into fields m and n which may, for example. be respectively black and red. Vi'ith such a ribbon it is usual to set the actuating devices by employing the faces 61 and 62. lVhen the working face 61 is in operation as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 the link 58 will be maintained normally in the forward position, the pin 57 engaging with the front end of the slot 56 near the fulcrum of the operating lever. If at this time the lower cross pin 37 is engaged with the operating lever 52, then the printing portion of the ribbon wvill be normally maintained in the position shown in Fig. l, and at printing operation will be lifted so as to present the lower field a opposite the printing point 79 Referring to Fig. 2 wherein the ribbon is represented by small parts or sections and the printing line is represented by the dotted line 37, p, the normal position of the ribbon corresponding with.

Suppose it be desired to dispense with the use of the ribbon entirely in order that a stencil sheet may be printed or for some other reason, then the upper portion of the ribbon carrier is pressed rearward to the dotted line position of Fig. This results in swinging the lower cross pin 37 out of engagement with the slot 53 in the operating lever. Still holding the ribbon carrier and its guide pressed in against the force of the spring 50, the carrier may be slid down on its guide until the upper cross pin 38 is opposite the slot 53 whereupon the carrier may be released and the spring will force the cross pin 38 into engagement with theoperating lever. It will be seen that this change in connection between the ribbon carrier and operating lever is effected without moving or otherwise affecting the operating lever itself. By said change the normal position of the printing portion of the ribbon is changed also, being lowered from the a position of Fig. 2 to the position indicated by the letter 02 in said figure. If now the link 58 be set normally in the dotted line position of Fig. 1, it will operate when the printing keys are actuated to raise the printing portion of the ribbon only to the position indicated by the letter 1 in Fig. 2 which is not far enough to bring any portion of the ribbon opposite the printing line on the platen. Consequently the types will move over the top edge of the ribbon without touching the same and will cooperate directly with the work sheet.
Sometimes it is desirable to print a memorandum on the stencil sheet prior to I or after completion of the stenciling. 1n such case the link 58 is shifted forward to the full line position of Fig. l and then at printing operation the ribbon will be lifted to the a position in Fig. 2, thus presenting the black field of the ribbon to the types and enabling the explanatory writing or other memoranda to be printed in black on the stencil sheet. It will be observed that the variation in the throw of the vibrator is effected by setting the link 58 and withoutdisturbing the normal position of the operating lever 52.

It will be noted that by my present invention I provide a member (in the present instance a lever) which member is combined with-means, for varying the normal position of the printing portion of the ribbon, said means in the'prcsent instance comprising a ribbon carrier or vibrator; that said member is also combined with means which operate to variably move the printing portion of the ribbon at printing operation, this variable moving means comprising a link which is settable in a plurality of normal relationships with said member; that said member has a single normal position;
that the ribbon carrier is connectible with said member at any one of a plurality of connecting points; that in the preferred form the ribbon carrier has a pluralityof cross pins which are connectible with a slotted operating lever; that the ribbon carrier and the operating lever are combined with means for affording a change in the normal relationship between said carrier and said lever; that the operating lever is connected with a key-operated universal bar by connections which comprise a link; that means are provided for varying the normal relationship of said connections or connecting devices, which means comprise a hand-operated controlling member having a plurality of faces; that said faces are adapted to co-act with a link; that the ribbon carrier is associated witha guide; that said caiiier may be vibrated independently of said guide; that the guide may be moved to permit the normal position of said carrier to be varied; that in the present instance this movement of said guide is a pivotal one; that when said guide is turned on its pivot independently of the printing operation of the machine, said carrier is turnable with said guide; and that said guide is spring controlled, the spring operating to restore it to normal position after it has been given a pivotal movement.

In ribbon vibrating mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a member having a single normal position, a ribbon carrier connectible with said member at any one of a plurality of connecting points, actuating devices for said member, and means for varying the effect of said actuating deviceson said member.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon carrier, an operating lever, means for affording variation in the normal relationship between said carrier and said lever, actuating devices for said lever, and means for varying the normal relationship between said actuating devices and said lever.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a ribbon carrier, an operating lever therefor, meansindependent of the operationof the machine for affording a change in the normal relationship between said carrier and said lever, and means for variably actuating said lever at printing operation.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon operating lever having a single normal position, a ribbon carrier connectible therewith at any one of a plurality of connecting points, a key operateduniversal bar, connections between said universal bar and said lever comprising a link, and means for varying the normal relationship between said link and'said lever.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon operating lever having a single normalposition, a ribbon carrierconnectible therewith at any one of a plurality of connecting points, a key operated universal bar, connecting devices between the same and said lever, and means for varying the normal relationship of said connecting devices, said last red-Jed means comprising a hand operated. controlling member having a plurality of faces adapted to co-actfjitith said link.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon carrier, a guide therefor having a single normal osition, means for vibrating said' carrier in ependently of said guide,and means for affording movement of said guide to permit themormal position of said ribbon carrier to be varied. v p

In two-color ribbon mechanism for writing machines, the combination of a ribbon carrier, devices for throwing the same to present one ribbon field to the printing point, said devices being adjustable so that when thereafter actuated a ditferentribbon field will be presented to the printing point, and means independent of said devices for setting said ribbon carrier so that said devices when actuated will present one ribbon field to the types'and when re-adjusted will when actuated fail to present either ribbon field to the types.
