APPARATUS FOR COLORING PLUME-STEMS.
i ,ooaoea Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 2, 1911.
Patented Nov. 2S, 1911. Serial No. 641,895.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, EUGENE W. Moen, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Coloring Piume-Stems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus of novel construction for coloring plume stems, and more particularly the bared faces of such stems as have been reduced in thickness by being cut away or shaved down. lhis operation has heretofore generally been done by hand which involves a slow and tedious process, while with, my apparatus the output is increased, uniformity obtained and cleanliness insured.
lu the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a cross section of an apparatus embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a plan of the clamp showing the lid partly broken away.
The apparatiils comprises essentially a drum 10 provided with an inner core or hub 11, and connected to the flanged ends '12 of a pair of axially alined shafts 13.
rllhese shafts are journaled in standards 14, and are suitably rotated, for example by means of a belt 15 engaging a pulley 16 faston one of said shafts. Drum 1() is provided at its rim with a continuous slot 17 profiled to gradually increase in width toward the center of the drum, and here communicating with a chamber 1S formed within the body thereof. Into this chamber a suitable coloring solution may be from time to time introduced by nozzle 19 adapted to be closed by a plug 20. Within slot 17 is accommodated a correspondingly shaped coniform pad formed of felt, or other absorptive and porous material, which extends some distance beyond the periphery of the drum to here form an annular brush 17a. It will be seen that upon the rotation of the drum, the coloring solution will be centrifugalized and will thoroughly impregnate the pad, so that it may be readily transferred to any object brought into contact therewith.
Means are provided for holding a plume having a split or mutilated stem with its raw surface against the brush and for feeding such plume along the brush, so that it which a phuuc-holding clamp may be guided lengthwise over th table. This clamp is shown to be formed of a slotted lower plate 2, a slotted upper plate 26 and a pair of gripping members 27 slidable between the plates. Grippers 27 are moved toward each other by springs 28 and are adapted to securely clamp the stem 29 of a plume between. them, the inward play of the grippers being controlled by screws 30. After the plume has become grasped in the manner described, a lid 31 hinged to plate 2G is folded on stem 29, so as to securely hold the plume in position. The charged clamp is slid by handle 32 over table 22 along rails 24: so as to draw the lower eX- posed face of the plume stem over the rotating brush. ln this way such face is rapidly colored in a quick, uniform and cleanly manner, without the use of skilled labor, and without liability of daubing the plume barbs.
I claim:
1. ri device of the character described, comprising a hollow rotatable drum having a peripheral slot, a brush fitted. into said slot and projecting beyond the periphery of the drum, means for rotatably mounting the drum, a plume holding device adapted to expose the plume stem, and means for guiding said device over the drum, whereby said stem is adapted to be brought into engagement with the brush.
2. A device of the character described, comprising' a hollow 'rotatable drum having a peripheral slot, a brush fitted into said slot and projecting beyond the periphery of the drum, means for rotatably mounting the drum, a divided guide extending over the drum and flanking the brush, and a plume holding device adapted to expose the plume stem and slidable along said guide.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a hollow rotatable drum having a flaring peripheral slot and a flaring absorptve pad tted into said slot and projecting beyond the rim of the drum.
4C. A device of the character described, comprising :L rotatable shaft, a hollow drum mounted thereon, :L brush communicating with the hollow of the drum and projecting beyond the rim thereof, a slotted table surmounting the drum, a guide on the table and a feather-holding clamp adapted t0 10 movably engage said guide.
