DUMIPING ATTACHMENT FOR HEADERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MIGI-IAEL F. BRAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kuhn, in the county of Lamoure and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Dumping Attachments for Headers; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in receiving and discharging attachments for headers, more especially the headers or harvesters of flax although my improved dump ing attachmentis capable of use in connection with other harvesting or gathering ma chinery and possibly with excavators or dredgers.

The object of this invention is to improve the detailed construction of such a machine, to which end the same consists of certain novel features, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a header show ing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an inner side view of the receiving box forming part of the invention; Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of the box and upper portion of the elevator; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device shown at the rear end of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a portion of a heading 1nachine which may be of the usual or any suitable construction, and to which is operatively connected the usual conveyor or elevator 2. My improved attachment comprises a box 3 which may be of any suitable size, and which preferably tapers from its lower toward its upper end, as shown. The sides of the box are preferably detachably connected by a series of bolts 4 which are inserted through flanges 5 formed on the edges of two sides of the box and through the adjacent portions of the other two sides, as shown. By thus constructing the box the same may be readily knocked down and closely packed for shipping or storing.

The box is provided on its lower end with. a bottom 6 which is hinged to the lower end of the outer side of the box, whereby said bottom is adapted to be swung down to dis- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

charge the contents of the box. The upper end of the box is provided with a cover 7 which is hinged to the outer side of the box at its upper end, as shown. In the upper portion of the inner side of the box is formed an opening 8 with which is engaged the upper end of the elevator or conveyor 2, where-- by the material cut by the header is conveyed to and discharged into the box.

The box is secured to the upper end of the elevator by bending the upper end of the inner side of the box outwardly and downwardly to form a hook-shaped flange 9, which is adapted to be engaged with the upper edge of the bottom of the elevator casing, as clearly shown in Fig. 4- of the drawings. The box is further secured to the elevator casing by an upper pair of brace bars 10, said bars being secured to the opposite sides of the box near its upper end by the bolts 4: which fasten the sides together. The inner ends of the brace bars 10 are bent inwardly at an angle to form attaching hooks 11 which are bolted or otherwise secured to the upper cross bar of the elevator casing. The lower portion of the box is braced and held in position by a pair of lower brace bars 12, said bars being arranged diagonally and secured at their outer ends to the sides of the box and at their inner ends to the sides of the elevator, as shown.

Secured to the lower side of the bottom 6 of the box is a cross bar 13, the ends of which project a suitable distance beyond the opposite sides of the box and have formed therein apertures to which are secured the lower ends of a pair of bottom operating cables 14, said cables passing upwardly and around guide pulleys 15 secured to the op posite sides of the box near its upper end. The outer ends of the cables 14 are connected to the angularly bent ends of a cross bar or yoke 16 in which is formed a centrally disposed eye 17. To the eye 17 is connected the inner end of a main operating cable 18 which passes through a guide pulley 19 on the frame of the machine and through a similar pulley 20 on an upright or standard 21 rising from the drivers platform 22. The end of the cable 18, after passing through the pulley 20, is secured to the forward end of a foot lever 23, the rear end of which is pivotally and slidably mounted on a bailshaped attaching bar 2 1 secured to the platform, as shown. When thus arranged the lever 23 is adapted to be depressed by the driver, thereby operating the

14 and 18 to cause the same to swing the bottom 6 to a closed position. The bottom 6 when thus closed is fastened in a closed position by means of a catch plate 25 secured to the standard 21 and with which the lever 23 is adapted to be engaged when depressed in the mannerdescribed. By thus constructing the bottom of the box, and arranging the operating cables and lever, it will be readily seen that the lever may be released when desired, thus permitting the bottom of the box to swing downwardly and discharge the contents of the latter at the will of the driver. By thus controlling the discharge of the material, if the latter be flax it can be deposited in small piles so that the flax will readily dry without rotting. By forming the box 3 larger at its lower than at its upper end, the material will readily drop out of the same when the bottom is opened in the manner described.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

2. A dumping attachment for headers comprising a box having in one side an opening adapted to receive the upper end of the elevating conveyer of the header, a flange formed on the lower edge of said opening and adapted to be hooked into engagement with the upper edge of the bottom of the conveyer casing, a series of brace rods attached to said box and adapted to be secured to the elevator casing, a hinged bottom on the box, and means for opening and closing said bottom at will from a remote point.
