BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,930, dated March 31, 1885.

Be it known that I, LUCIAN H. GUILFOBD, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVausoon, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sack-Holders; and I do de' clare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to bag-holders, and

has for its object to provide simple means whereby the hopper may be conveniently secured in any position, simple constructions for supporting a screen at the discharge end of said hopper, and convenient means for attaching the bag thereto, as will be described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my hopper in position to be moved into on gagement with its support. Fig. 2 is a side view of the hopper properly supported. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the hopper suitably. supported, and Fig. 4c is a vertical sectional view on about line 00 m, Fig. 1.

The support A may represent a board suited to be driven into the ground in a field,or rested up against a' tree or fence, or it may be the side of abarn or bin in a granary. This support Ais provided with keeper-cleats A, the inner edges of which are rabbcted or beveled inward toward the support A, as shown at A It will be seen that these cleats A are set at an incline,with their lower ends nearest together.

The hopper B is formed of the front board, B, the back board, B and the side boards, B B and properly tapers toward its lower end. I provide this hopper at its rear endwith cleats O O, suitably formed to engage the keepers A on the support A. The side boards, B of the hopper are extended rearwardly beyond the back board, B, and have the cleats Osecured to them. In these side boards, B I form vertical slots 13*, for the purpose of enabling the hopper to be secured to a bin, wagon end-gate, or other desired support by fitting the slots B over such bin or end-gate. It

will be seen that by extending the side boards, B beyond the back board, B and forming the bin supporting devices at the rear ends of said side boards, I support the hopper with its discharge-opening away from the bin or other support to which it is attached, so that the bag can be easily fitted over the rear end of the discharge-opening, as will be understood most clearly from Fig. 2.

By forming the slots in the side boards I provide the supporting-hooks without involving the necessity of securing separate devices to the hopper; also, by providing these hooks at the opposite edges of the rear side of the hopper, the weight of the bag and contents suspended from such hopper is borne at each edge of the rear side of the hopper, so thelatter and the bag are firmly held from any lateral swinging.

Projections D are extended rearwardly from the hopper on opposite sides of and beyond the discharge-opening, and serve to receive and hold the mouth of the bag when fitted thereover, as will be described. On the front board, B, at its lower end and close to its opposite sides,are secured guide-staples E, for the stretching-rods F. These rods F are movable at their outer ends through the staples E, and have their inner ends secured to a lever, G,on

opposite sides of the pivot G of said lever.

It will be seen by this construction that when the lever G is adjusted into the position shown in Fig. 1 it will draw the arms F in close to the sides of the hopper, and that by adjusting the lever G into the dotted position indicated by such figure the arms F will be forced outward in such manner as to stretch the mouth of the bag when fitted thereover,and hold said bag firmly in contact with the projections 1), as well as the ends of the arms F. In carrying out this improvement I preferably form the lever in the L shape, so that its upper or operating end will lie close to the arms F in either of its positions, so that the said lever will not interfere with the pouring of grain or other 5 material into the hopper.

It is desirable to provide a sieve or screen whereby to prevent the passage into the bag of undesired substances,such as cobs in shelled corn, 8:0. To such end I provide sieve H, the loo below said side boards, as shown. These 'guidesit will be seen,retain the sieves close to and against the under side of the hopper; and in order to limit the inward movement of the screen and stop such screen at the proper point I extend the rear or back board, 13 below the side and front board, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the screen will engage against such extension of the back board and be stopped in proper position over the hopper.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. In a bag-holder, the combination, with a support, A, having keepers A converging toward one end, of the hopper provided at its rear end with cleats U 0, corresponding in angle to and fitted to engage with the keepers A, substantially as set forth.

2. In a bag-holder, the combination of the support having keepers A with the hopper having its side boards extended rearwardly beyond its back board, and provided with cleats G, extended laterally from said side boards, substantially as set forth.

3. In a bag-holder, a hopper, B, having its side boards, B extended rearwardly beyond its back board, B and provided with vertical slots B, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of the hopper having its back board projected below its front and side boards, guides I on the lower ends of the side boards, and the screen supported and movable on guides I to and against the downward extension of the back board, substantially as set forth.

5. In a bag-holder, the combination, with the hopper having projections D extended rearwardly from its lower or discharge end, and the staples E E on its forward end, of the .lever G, pivoted to the hopper between the staples E, and the arms F, having their outer endsiprojected through staples E, and their inner ends secured to lever G,on opposite sides of the pivot of said lever, substantially as set forth.
