DRAIN CONNECTIN FOR FIRE-PLUGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drain Connections for Fire-Plugs, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a drain connection for fire plugs and has for its object to provide a fire plug in a manner as hereinafter set forth with means for draining the water from that portion of the plug above the inlet valve, thereby preventing any possibility of the water within that portion of the plug above the inlet valve congealing in cold weather whereby the passage from the inlet to the outlet of the plug will be free.
In certain forms of ire plugs the outlet is positioned at the upper end of the fire plugs and the inlet near the bottom of the plug and associated with the inlet is an inlet valve which when shifted from its seat permits of the water passing from the inlet through the body of the plug and discharge at the outlet, that is to say, as long as the inlet valve is 0E its seat. When the inlet valve is returned to its seat a certain amount of water remains in the plug above the valve and oftentimes in cold weather this water congeals and interrupts the discharge from the inlet to the outlet. To overcome this objection is the primary object of the invention, the latter consisting brieiy in associating with the plug a valved drain connection arranged in proximity to the inlet and capable of being closed when the plug is in use and opened when it is desired to drain.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a drain connection for fire plugs which is simple in its construction and ar-' rangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily attached to the plug, and inexpensive to set up.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come withinthe scope of theclaim hereunto a lpended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a lire plug showing the adaptation therewith of a drain connection in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical `sectional view broken away, of the drain connection and further showing in dotted lines the valvular element of the drain counection closed.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a fire plug provided at its lower end with an inlet pipe 2 and at its upper end with an outlet 3. The plug is provided with a conventional form of valve (not shown) for closing the inlet and' said valvular element is carried by a valve stem 4: which projects through the top ofthe plug, as at 5, so that the stem can be shifted to open and close the valve. The foregoing elements are ofv known construction.
The body portion 1 of the plug is formed with a laterally extending screw threaded nipple 6 with which is connected a laterally projecting elbow 7 formed with a partition 8 having a centrally disposed opening 9 and with the wall of the opening beveled, as at 10, to constitute a valve seat. The elbow 7 at its outer end is flanged, as at 11, which has connected thereto, as at 12, a drain pipe 13 which may lead to any desired point.
The elbow 7 is formed with a vertically disposed nipple 14, with which is secured a vertically disposed hollow cylindrical casing 15 provided in its lower end with interior threads, with which engages a hollow interiorly threaded plug 16 constituting a guide, which is engaged by a screw threaded valve stem 17 carrying on its lower end a valve 18 adapted when vthe stem is shifted downwardly to engage the seat 9. Tho stem 17 projects above the plug 16 and the upper end thereof is squared, as at 19, so as to be engaged by a tool 2O to rotate the stem 17 whereby it can be elevated and lowered. The tool 20 is of a length as to project through a cap 21 mounted upon the top of the casing 15 and the projecting end of the tool 2O is squared, as at 22, for the reception of a Spanner wrench for the purpose of rotating the tool 20, when it is desired to elevate or lower the stem 17, to unseat or seat the valve 18. The casing 15 is connected to the plug body 1 by a conventional form ot clamp 28.
It is obvious that from the foregoing con struction and arrangement oit' parts that when desired the water can be drained from that portion of the plug body between the inlet valve, and the outlet 3. When the plug is in use the valve 18 is seated thereby shutting off the drain connection, but after the plug has been used and it is desired to drain the body portion of the plug, the Valve 18 is unseated.
What I claim, is:
A drain connection for re plugs comprising a laterally-disposed elbow adapted to be secured to and communicating with the lower portion of a fire plug, said elbow provided with a partition formed with an opening, the wall of said opening constituting a valve seat, said elbow7 further provided at its top with a vertically-disposed nipple opening into the interior of the elbow, a relatively long vertically-disposed casing extending in and secured to the inner face of said nipple, an interiorly and eXteriorly threaded plug secured to the inner face of said casing at the lower end thereof and constituting a guide, a valve provided with a threaded stem, said valve adapted to engage said seat, and said stem adapted to engage the interior threads oi' the plug whereby the valve is maintained stationary, said stem projecting above said plug and having a squared enlargement for the reception of a tool for engagement with the stem to adjust it, and means for main` taining the upper portion of said casing stationary. l
