ROSS HAZELRIGG, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED DOOR KNOB AND BELL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1911.
Application filed February 1, 1911, Serial No. 605,932. Renewed October 9, 1911. Serial No. 653,725.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ross HAZELRIGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door Knobs and Bells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door knobs, and the principal object of the same is to provide a combined door knob and bell in which mechanism is arranged within the knob that is actuated by turning the knob to cause the bell to ring.
The invent-ion contemplates a hollow knob formed in two sections, one being of bell metal, the knob inclosing bell ringing mechanism that is actuated by turning the knob, means being provided whereby the said mechanism may be rendered inoperative, and means alsobeing provided whereby the door connections of the knob can be manipulated so that the knob may be rtated without ringing the bell.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the improved knob attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a View in front elevation, partly broken away, the bell section being removed. Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the door plate showing the manner of attaching the knob thereto. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view showing the knob fastened to a door plate. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the plate engaging sleeve of the knob.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the improved combined knob and bell comprises the door plate 6 provided with a transverse opening 7 in which the annular shoulder 8 is formed. A sleeve 9 provided with external threads 10 has one end fitted within opening 7 and abuts shoulder 8 therein. A'
hook-shaped lip 11 projects from sleeve 9 and engages over the shoulder 8. An open-' angular handgrip 17 that lies in recess 13 and which can be manipulated to rotate rod 15 so that the end hook 16 will be disengaged from shoulder 8. A jam nut 18 is carried by the threaded portion of sleeve 9 for binding engagement with plate 6 to prevent rotary movements of said sleeve.
A hollow section 19 has a sleeve extension 20, the end shoulder 21 of which abuts the end flange 14 of sleeve 9. A neck 22 projects from sleeve and enters sleeve 9. The usual spindle 23 projects through plate 6, sleeve 9, neck 22 and sleeve 20 and is fastened to said sleeve 20 by the screw 24.
Sleeve 9 has an elongated strap extension 25 at its front end that extends through an opening 26 in the end shoulder of sleeve 20 and has its outer end bent to form a flange 27 that projects into an arc-shaped slot 28 in the plate 29 carried by the outer portion of knob section 19. Said plate 29 is flat and preferably integral with section 19 and forms the outer closure for said section. A pivot pin 30 connects a segmental rack 31 .to said plate 29, said rack 31 being riveted,
or otherwise fastened to the end flange 27 of strap 25. Adjacent the pivot pin 30, rack 31 carries a pair of oppositely disposed outstanding lugs 32 against which a spring 33 bears, said spring being coiled about a pin 34 carried by plate 29 and hav- 1ng its rear arm 35 abutting a lug 36 so that the spring is held under tension. A rocker arm 37 is pivotally mounted on plate 29 and its pointed end contacts with the teeth of rack 31 when the plate 29 is rotated. Said arm carries oppositely disposed lugs 38 which contact with the spring arm 39 which has a portion coiled about a pin 40 carried by plate 29 and a rear arm 41 adapted to be engaged by a cam 42 pivotally mounted on said plate 29. Spring arm 39 carries a hammer 43.
A bridge 44 has its flanged ends 45 fastened to plate 29, and a hollow knob section 46, formed of bell metal, is fastened to the arch of said bridge by the screw 47. Pins 48 connect the bridge 44 to the knob section 46 so that pivotal movement of said section is prevented. Knob section 46 is provided with an edge recess 49 through which the cam 42 projects so that said cam can be manipulated to cause the same to contact with, or be removed from contact with, the rear arm 41 of the hammer spring 39.
Normally the sleeve 9 is held immovable relative to the plate 6 by the nut 18 and the strap 25 holds the rack 81 stationary. Sleeve 20 of knob section 19 is rotatable in sleeve 9 and the bell section 46 being rigidly fastened to section 19, it will be seen that when the knob is rotated, the arm 37 is oscillated by contact with the teeth of rack 31 so that lugs 38 are alternately forced against spring arm 89 so that said arm is vibrated and causes the hammer 43 to strike the bell section and sound an alarm. The cam 42 normally places arm 89 under tension by being in contact with arm- 41, and said cam projects through the recess in the bell 46. This arrangement permits the cam 42 to be rotated to disengage it from arm 41 so that the knob can be rotated without ringing the bell.
As has been stated, the sleeve 9 is locked to the door plate by the nut 18 to prevent rotation of said sleeve and it will be clear that by manipulating said nut, the sleeve will rotate with the rest of the knob and the bell will not be rung.
It will be clear from the foregoing that this invention provides simple means which normally sounds an alarm when the door is opened and when necessary or desirable, the alarm mechanism can be rendered inoperative by manipulating either the cam 42 or the nut 18. Obviously the cam is used by the occupant when opening the door, and the nut is released when there is no necessity of the alarm being sounded.

A combined door knob and bell comprising a sleeve, means for fastening the same to a door plate, aknob section rotatably engaging said sleeve, said knob section having a plate at its outer end, said plate having a slot formed therein concentric to the axis of rotation of the knob sections an eX tension carried by said sleeve and passing through said section and entering said slot, a rack pivotally connected to said plate and fastened to said extension, a bell metal knob section, means for fastening the same to the plate on the first mentioned knob section, and bell ringing mechanism carried by said plate and actuated by said rack.
