To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHANN G. lVALIr MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Oakland, in the countyof Alameda and State of California, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Policemens Trun-' cheons and Extension Plstol-Barrels, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to lmprovements 1n combination policemens truncheons and QX-Z tension pistol barrels.

Theobject of my invention is to provide a policemans truncheon which may be usedas an additional barrel for the pistol he may carry; which may be quickly and firmly attached to the pistol and readily detached;

therefrom.

In the figures 1 shows a pistol having a sight 9 shown in Fig. 2.

10 is a cylinder, interiorly threaded, located in the handle of the truncheon having a catch consisting of a recess 21 and a lug 22 engageable with sight 9. An extension barrel 6, Jreferably of steel, running longitudinally in the truncheon, is provided at its rear end with a threaded flange 7 engaging interiorly the cylinder 10.

12 is a telescope joint on cylinder 10 having a forward wall 12' which is slidable and is centrally bored so as to inclose barrel 6 extending therethrough. A cylinder spring 13 encircles the barrel 6, one end thereof engaging wall 12" and the other end engaging fixed bearing 14: having a central bore in which barrel 6 fits, said spring keeping wall 12 in engagement with flange 7. The bearing 14 has a hole 29 in one side thereof penetrated by rod 15 fixed in wall 12 and having a turnbuckle 16, the forward end of Specification of Letters Patent.

said rod having wedge 18 engaging lug 32' of pivoted sight 5 and whereby the same is elevated and permitted to descend, a spring 20 fixed in the forward end of said truncheon engaging the forepart of said sight by means of head or pin 19.

A plu 17 is located in the forward end of handle 3, having threads engaging threads in said handle. The plug 17 has a hole in one side thereof in which is slidable rod 15.

The pistol 1 has a barrel provided with a forward end having less circumference than the body thereof designated 8 and fitting in a corresponding aperture in flange 7.

A channel 30 in the forward part of the truncheon 2 contains rod 15 and in which said rod is slidable. A grooved sight 4 is provided in the knob of the truncheon handle 3. An opening 27 in the said knob is provided for sight 9 of the pistol 1. A hole 23, preferably tapered, in cylinder 10 is provided for engagement with the pointed head or pin 24 rearwardly engaged by cylindrical spring 25 secured in the knob of said handle by screw 31.

To introduce the barrel of thepistol into the extension barrel 6, the same is inserted into the opening in the rear end of the handle of the truncheon provided therefor, sight 9 passing into the passage 26 until the sight contacts with telescope joint or sleeve 12, which is extended by spring 13 as shown in Fig. 4, the barrel of pistol 1, being then turned to the right, the sight slides along the contacting edge of sleeve 12 until the sight is within the slot 21, when the pressure against sleeve 12 being relinquished, the sight is firmly held within the slot by lug 22 as shown in Fig. 5; thereupon the barrel of the pistol 1 is turned still farther to the right, head or pin 24 being thereby forced out of hole 23. The cylinder 10 being interiorly threaded as shown in Fig. 2 runs on thread 11 of flange 7. The act of turning the pistol barrel to the right approximately of a turn draws the barrel of pistol 1 in so that the forward reduced end of said barrel fits firmly in its seat in flange 7 as shown, making the bore of the pistol barrel and bore of extension barrel 6 one continuous bore. The act of turning barrel 1 to the right after being inserted in the rear end of the truncheon as set forth not only makes a complete coupling of the two barrels mentioned, but sight 9 while being drawn inwardly by the forward movement of cylinder 10 on the thread 11 forces inwardly sleeve 12, which simultaneously raises sight 5 by the act of wedge 18 being forced under pivoted sight 5 through the forward movement of rod 15. The act of turning the barrel of pistol l to the left until pin 24 enters hole 23 places the truncheon ina position to be uncoupledsaid act clearing sight 9 from lug 22. The act of un-' when the barrel of pistol 1 is withdrawn the passage 26 is held in line with opening 27 for the withdrawal of the pistol.

Sight- 5 is preferably given a coat of a suitable luminous substance which makes it possible to see it in the dark. The sight 5 disappearing as it does when the barrel of pistol 1 is uncoupled makes it posslble to use the truncheon without cutting the person on whom it is used.

In constructing the truncheon embodying my invention, I prefer to follow the following method :The forward part of the truncheon is of wood and is constructed in two parts, being glued to the barrel 6 and plug 17 the groove 30 belng cut in the. wood and fitted over the sight 5 and the sight rod 15 previously, thereupon the same is turned down while on barrel 6. The part 3 being a combination handle and case is made of aluminum and threaded to fit flange 17it is plated to resemble gun metal finish to match the pistol barrel, and sight groove 4 is cut in the butt or knob of the truncheon. The turnbuckle 16 is for adjusting the sight 5. The part 2 is slightly tapered toward its forward end so that should it be grasped by an opponent it could easily be pulled out of his hand. Handle 3 has a large butt or knob as mentioned so as to make it improbable that the truncheon could be pulled from the hand of the officer having it in his possession.

I claim 1. In combination, a policemans truncheon having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough, a separate pistol barrel in said aperture, said barrel being provided rearwardly with an exteriorly threaded flange containing a chamber having a bore greater than the bore of said barrel extending forwardly from said chamber, an interiorly threaded cylinder inclosing said threaded flange and having a rear wall containing a central opening, a sleeve having a forward wall containing a central opening slidably inclosing said barrel, and a spring engaging the front end of said forward wall.

2. In combination, a policemans truncheon having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough, a separate pistol barrel in said aperture, said barrel being provided rearwardly with an exteriorly threaded flange containing a chamber having a bore greater than the bore of said barrel extending forwardly from said chamber, an 1nteriorly threaded cylinder inclosing said threaded flange and having a'rear wall contalnlng a central opening, a sleeve having a forward wall containing a central opening slidably inclosing said barrel; a spring engaging the front end of said forward wall, a rod connected to said sleeve rearwardly and having its forward end provided with a wedge, a pivoted slight in engagement with said wedge, and means bearing against said sight for keeping the same in engagement with said wedge.

In combination, a policemans truncheon having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough, a separate pistol barrel in said aperture, said barrel being provided rearwardly with an exteriorly threaded flange containing a chamber havlng a bore greater than the bore of said barrel extending forwardly from said chamber; an interio-rly threaded cylinder inclosing said threaded flange and having a rear wall containing a central opening, a sleeve having a forward wall containing a central opening slidably inclosing said barrel; a spring engaging the front end of said forward wall; a rod connected to said sleeve rearwardly and having its forward end provided with a wedge; a pivoted sight in engagement with said wedge, a resiliently-supported pin projecting through the butt of the handle of said truncheon and engaging said threaded cylinder, and means bearing against said sight for keeping the same in engagement with said wedge.

4. In combination, a policemans truncheon having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough; a separate piston barrel in said aperture, said barrel being provided rearwardly with an exteriorly threaded flange containing a chamber having a bore greater than the bore of said barrel extending forwardly from said chamber; an interiorly threaded cylinder inclosing said threaded end flange and having a rear wall containing a central opening; a sleeve having a forward wall containing a central opening slidably inclosing said barrel; a spring engaging the front endv of said forward wall; a rod connected to said sleeve rearwardly and having its forward end provided with a wedge, a pivoted sight in engagement with said wedge, a handle for said truncheon provided with a butt having a sight out therein in alinement with said pivoted sight, and having also an interior aperture for admitting the sight of a pistol therethrough, and means bearing against said pivoted sight for keeping the same in engagement with said wedge.

In combination, a policemans truncheon having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough; a separate pistol barrel in said aperture, said barrel being provided rearwardly with an exteriorly threaded flange containing a chamber having a bore greater than the bore of said barrel extending forwardly from said chamber; an interiorly threaded cylinder inclosing said threaded flange and having a rear wall containing a central opening and having also a recess in the rear portion thereof centrally penetrated by a forwardly projecting lug and a passage on one side of said lug leading from said recess and extending through the rear end of said cylinder; a sleeve having a forward wall containing a central opening slidably inclosing said barrel; a spring engaging the front end of said forward wall; a rod secured to said sleeve rearwardly and having its forward end provided with a wedge; a pivoted sight in engagement with said wedge; a handle for said truncheon provided with a butt having a sight out therein in alinement with said pivoted sight, and having also an exterior aperture for admitting the sight of a pistol therethrough, and means bearing against said pivoted sight for keeping the same in engagement with said wedge.

In combination with an extension barrel for firearms having its rear end provided with an exteriorly threaded flange having a central chamber therein opening rearwardly, an interiorly threaded cylinder having a rear wall provided with a central opening therein of greater bore than said first mentioned chamber and opening rearwardly, and having also a recess in the rear portion thereof centrally pentrated by a forwardly projecting lug and a passage on one side of said lug leading from said recess and extending through the rear end of said cylinder; a sleeve having a forward wall provided with a central opening penetrated and slidably engaged by said barrel; a rod supported on one side of said barrel having its rear end secured to said sleeve and its front end provided with a wedge, a pivoted sight rearwardly in engagement with said wedge, and means bearing against the front end of said sight for keeping it in engagement with said wedge.

7. In combination with an extension barrel for firearms having a rear end provided with an exteriorly threaded flange having a central chamber therein opening rearwardly, an interiorly threaded cylinder having a rear wall, provided with a central opening therein, and engaging said flange, and hav ing also a recess in the rear portion thereof centrally penetrated by a forwardly projecting lug and a passage on one side of said lug leading from said recess and extending through the rear end of said cylinder; a sleeve having a forward wall provided with a central opening penetrated and slidably engaged by said barrel; a rod supported on one side of said barrel having its rear end secured to said sleeve and its front end provided with a wedge; a pivoted sight rearwardly in engagement with said wedge, and means bearing against the front end of said sight for keeping it in engagement with said wedge.
