Be it known that I, Morals G. GOLDBERG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in thecounty of New York and State tication.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to indicating means to aid in properly centering a sheet with reference to the platen and to facilitate properly centering a heading on the paper.
The Iobject of my invention, generally stated, is to provide simple' and efficient means of the character' specified.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter-appear, my invent-ion consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter i, describe and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying. drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a fragmentary, 'front elevation, showing the. upper portion of a Monarch machine embodying my invention, parts of the construction being omitted for clearness' of illustration. transverse, sectional View of the same.
I have shown my invention embodied in the present instance in a Monarch machine in which the invention may be readily included without changing-the structural features of the machine. It should be understood,' however, that the invention is applicable to, and may be embodied in, various styles of typewriting machines.
The frame of the machine comp'rises corner posts 1 and a top plate 2. Guide rails 5% are fixed tothel top plate of the nnufhine'in the usualy manner and have their opposite faces grooved for the reception of anti-friction balls or rollers t which are likewise re.- ceivcd in opposltely grooved rails 5 -of a guide bar (i, which constitutes the rear cross bar of the carriage. Forwardly projecting end bars 7 extend from the carriage and are provided with bearings to receive a platen shaft 8, on which a rotative cylindrical platen 9 is mounted. The carriage is thus mounted for movement over the top plate of the machine from side to side thereof.

The usual paper feed equipmentmay be embodied in the machine, although parts of the paper feed mechanism have been omitted and other parts have been only diagra-mmatically illustrated. The paper table 11 is mountedon the carriage to direct the paper to the bight between the platen and main feed rollers 12. Forwardfeed rollers 13 coperate with the paper to feed it upwardly to the printing line and margin feed rollers 14 of the usual construction may likewise be provided. The paper in its movement pastI the feed rollers 13 passes under a combined platen and carriage scale 15 with which a pointer 16 on a card guide 17 coperates. The printingpoint represented at X inFig. 1 is indie-ated by the usual printing point indicator carried by the card guide. A cross bar 18 is connected at its ends to the end bars 7 of the carriage and is situated above the platen in a position where the paper a, as it passes upwardlyiand rearwardly from the printing line, may pass` lerasing plate, and as the leading edge of the` paper passes above the platen it is deflected over the supporting bar 18 so'that the paper rests above and passes over the erasing plate and bar; s
The mechanism thus far described constitutes part of the usual equipment of the Monarch machine and further detailed description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
For the purposes of my present invention l provide indicating means arranged above the platen and coperative with the work sheet, or the side edges thereof, to properly center the Work sheet with reference to the platen. I prefer to arrange the indicating meanson the erasing plate 1),and as shown in Fig. 1; the indicating means preferably comprises a divided scale, one portion or sectionof the scale being arranged to the righthand of the center of the erasing plate and the other portion or section of the scale being arranged at the left-hand side of the center of the erasing plate. The scale is preferably provided with scale marks 20 spaced apart at letter space distances and is also' provided with numerical indices 21 which in the present instance progress in opposite directions on tlle two scale sections. Thus the letthand scale eciion has the nlnnerical indices (J." "10," "Boland 30 progressingt0- ward the center ot the erasing plate, which plate constitutes a support or carrier for the scale. Corresponding nulllerical indices are provided at` ille opposite side of the center ot the erasing plate and these numerical indices likewise progress trom the outer end toward ille center of the divided scale.. Both frei-tions ol1 ille scale are alike. except. that. the numerical indices thereon progress in opposite directions and both sections of the scale are in the saule plane and are in alinelnent longitudinally ot the platen. Preferably ille scale n'larks or indices 20 on the centering scale, which latter is designated as a whole by ille reference llluneral Q2, are in alinenlent with the indices on the platen and carriage scale.
In order to proiierly center a. heading on the sheet with the aid ot my invention, the
work sheet (l, is introduced into the machine in the usual manner and is properly centered witll rct'erence to the platen by bringing ille sidel edges ot the work sheet. into register with the corresponding indices at opposite ends of the centering scale 22, as shown in Vig. l. lViih the sheet thus properly centered relatively to the platen, the operator will count the number of spaces in the heading to be produced, including in the calculation the spaces between words and those occupied by punctuation. As an eX- :lnlple` a centered heading has been shown in Fig. l on the work sheet. It will be observed that in accordance witll nly present invention the centering scale is arranged at the delivery side of the platen and in a position Where' the paper, after its leading edge leaves the printing point or printing line, may pass over the scale to afford an easy centering of the work sheet with reference to the centering scale by bringing the side edges of the work sheet into register with the indices on the scale. llloreovcr, it will lle understood that the centering scale may, in accordance with lny present invention, be readily applied to the Monarch machine withoutmodifying any of the structural features of that machine.

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a rotative platen, a. printing instrumentality adapted toetrike against the front face of the platen, an erasing plate at the delivery side of the platen and a1'- ranged above it and over which the Work sheet passes after the vleading edge thereof passes the printing line, and a. Work Sheet centering scale carried by said erasing plate on the upper face thereof and over which the work sheet passes, the scale having corre- Sponding numerical indices at opposite end portions thereof, the numerical indices progressing in opposite directions, whereby a Work sheet may be centered relatively to the platen.
