Speciicatin tuners Patent. Patented Nov. 21, 191.1;

To au whom it may concern:
Be it known that LHr OImnr n einem of the United states, residing in die city and connof San Francisco and State of California, ve invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Dividers and Center-Punches, of which the following is This invention relates to a mechanics tool, and particularly pertains tu a combixxed divider and center-punch.
It is the object of this invention to provide a tool which is especihlly applicable for use in machine-shop work for laying out and punchin'g center marks, etc. on the surface of the material being worked, and by means of which this laying out and punchmay be accomplished m one operation.
t is common in machine shop practice for the mechanic to lay out points, such as tlfle holes to be'dillec, by imeans 0 apuro v1del's,espeem yw iere ierexs to be a number apart. The mechanic then work thus laid out with a tool known as a the marks p b v delivering a blow on the center-punch with 'a hammer. A This necmitat going over the work twice in order to accomplish the one rult of forming an indent or startcenter into which to set the center of a drill, punch or other tool. B v the use of this invention the same work may be done in one operation.
The invention consists of the parts and construction and combination of parts :xs hereinafter more fully described and claimed having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational View of the invention. Fig. L is a side view of same. Fig. 3isanenlaroedcentralsextionofthesectional nut and the punch adjustment. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the sectional nut. Fig. 5 is a p--rspective view of one of the memhers of the sectional nut.
In the drawings A and B represent two divider or compass legs, pivoted at 2 and acted on by a spring 3 to normally spread The movement of the legs A-B toward or from each other is govsharp pouuml of centers at equal disnnces y goes over the l part of the center-punch 6, the latter is also center-punch, and indnt.5 reviously made by the div iders, double function of clamping the parts 7 and on -a screw 5 The novel partm provi erned by a thumb nut 4 which is threaded i.; .55 lng one of the legs. as B, with.
a combined compass point and center-punch 6 which is screw-threaded and fits in a pivoted clamp or sectional nutmade up of two parts or sections, 7 and 8. The part 7 extends tbrough the sleeve section or part 8 and has a screw-tlncaded st-m 9 passing through the lower end ofthe lee' B and recen'ng a thumb nut. 10. The :i jacent ends of sections 7-8 have interlocking tongues 7 to prevent turning, and these adjacent ends having iegis'tenn coperat' semi-- cwcular rec-essa 8 whic are screwaded to receive and embrace the screw-threaded punch member 6. 'l` he side of the leg B and adjacent end of the sleevel member 8 are serrated, as at 11, so that when the wing nut 10 is screwed up the part 8 cannot turn on its axis, and :is rhe member 8 intel-locks with the mrt 7, and each part carries a portion 'if t e thm-,uis to engage the threaded firmly gripped when the nut 10 is drawn tlght; that is to hay, thc nut l0 performs thc S about the pouch 6 und lof-king the clamp by the teeth li, so tha when the legs A-B nrc adjusted or opened out and set by the' thumb nut 4, the center-punch 6 may be ndjustcd and :maintained in :x vertical position. The leg A has an olf-set point 12 to put it in line with the punch 6.
ln practico. tliscI operator adjusts the compass' lugs B, so that lne points 6-12 will be .-cpnrntol the desired distance apart, then holding the tool upri hx on the surface to be nmrkod, he strikes a, low with a hammer ou the hond of the punch 6, :und thereh forms :t dent on the surface of the mate lle thon mts the point 12 in the dent thus made., un with the point of the punch 6 in the next place iu advance repeats the blow, und so on, thus forming a sexi of center- .punch dents at u'luidistanccs apart at one operation,` instead of u series 0f Scratches as usunllv made with a divider, which re-` quires gding over the work nguin with a hand center-punch to form the necessary dents. By loosening the clamp nut 10,1tho
centernach can be screwed up or down in its et formed on the parts 7 8, or turned to assume different positions, as shovm in Fig. 1, or both, as the exigencia of any perticnlar case may require.
Hx thus described my invention, what I im and desire to secure by Letters A combined divider and center-punch, consisting of two pivoted divider legs,on' e of said legs having s transverse perforation atislowermdmd serratedonon side mund said perforation, a sleeve with a serrated end m.; the serrated perfo- A of the opposite end sleeve having tongues rejecting in thedrredionofthelengthof sleevennd said end having s semi-circular threaded 'recs, a. com lementary member interlocking with sai tongues and having s. correspending semieircular threaded recess, said com lementary member having a' stein extemgng through Vthe sleeve and the perforation in the .I eg, a scnewed center punch' and point adjustably received in said screw-threaded recesses, and a nut fitting sand stem and operative to clamp the sleeve and tiltlscomplementary member and theleg testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand m the presen 'of two subscribing
