. ITED gTATE$ PATENT OFFIQE.
ABRAHAM ID. GOFFIN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
' CIGAR-CASE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM D. GOFFIN, a subject of Nicholas II, Emperor of Russia, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigar cases, and has for its object, among other things, to provide a device of this character that will be simple in design, neat and pleasing in appearance, and constructed at the minimum cost; and to so arrange and connect the cover with the body thereof that it may be locked when closed and readily unlocked and manipulated for the purpose of opening the same.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the cigar case, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved cigar case, partly in section, upon line AB of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the cover partially open; Fig. 1 is a similar view with the cover completely open; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of the body and the cover, taken upon line 0-D of Fig. 2 and Fig. 6 is a view of the underside of the cover.
In the practice of my invention I provide a body member 1, which is of any desired depth or width, provided with rounded edges 2, 3 and 4, with the edge 3 projecting upwardly above the top thereof to form the stop 5, upon which there is a locking lug 6.
The cover member 7 is preferably constructed with a bottom plate 8, upper plate 9, and intermediate plate 10 fixed therebetween, the bottom plate 8 having a notch 11 in one end thereof of substantially the same Specification of e e s H Patented Nov. 21, 1911. Application filed March 22, 1911.
Serial No. 616,187.
size as the locking lug 6 and with a slot 12 near the other end, having an offset slot 13 projecting laterally therefrom, and the intermediate plate 10 is provided with a slot 14 that registers with the slot 12, but of slightly greater width. The plates 8 and 10 may be integral with each other within my invention. The cover is secured to the body member by a screw 15 that is passed through the slots 14: and 12 and threaded into the body member 1 (see Fig. 1), after which the upper plate 9 is secured to the intermediate plate 10. The cover is locked in its closed position by means of the bolt 16 that is slidably mounted in a recess 17 in one side of the body 1, and normally pressed upward by the spring 18 and downwardly against the tension of the spring by means of the button 19 that passes through the slot 20 and is threaded into the bolt 16. When the cover is in its closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the upper end of the bolt 16 enters the slot 13 and prevents movement of the cover in relation to the body member, butas soon as the bolt 16 is withdrawn by manual actuation of the button 19, the cover is moved parallel with the body member to the position shown in Fig. 3, and by broken lines in Fig. 1, at which time the screw 15 is moving through the slots 12 and 14, and as the said screw abuts against the inner end of said slots, the cover is rotated to its completely open position, shown in Fig. 4c.
ere are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, and I would therefore have it understood, that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' The combination with a body member; of a cover member having a slotin its underside; a pivotal connection between said body and cover members; means, as a lug upon one of said members; and a notch in the ber in any direction when in its closed posi- 10 other of said members, which register with tion.
