BURIAL APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Lnvr JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in burial apparatus, and more particularly to an improved curtain supporting rod frame, adapted to be readily adjusted to fit any size of grave, and support a curtain hanging against the inner face of the grave, so as to hide the freshly cut earth.

A further object is to provide a frame of this character which is ornamental and attractive in appearance, simple in construction, comparatively cheap to manufacture, strong and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. 7

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a plan view illustrating my improved frame. Fig. 2, is a View in longitudinal section through one of the side members showing the curtain attached thereto, and Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 2, but taken through one of the end members.

1, 1, represent the side members, and 2, 2, the end members of my improved frame. Each of these members comprises an intermediate tube 3, and rods 4, which project into the opposite ends thereof, so that the rods and the tube telescoperelative to each other. To limit this telescoping movement, the tubes 3 are provided in their under faces with slots 5, through which pins 6 in rods 4 project, and the end walls of these slots limit the longitudinal adjustment of the members in one direction.

The rods 4 of the end members 2 are provided with enlarged perforated heads 7, through which the rods 4 of the side members 1 project, and are secured, and the extreme ends of the rods 4 of members 1 are preferably provided with ornamental heads 8 as shown. On all four of these members, rings 9 are provided, and are made with eyes 10 for the reception of hooks 11 connected to curtains 12.

In operation, the rod frame. is placed about the grave with the curtains 12 hanging down inside of the grave, so as togive a draped effect to the grave, and hide the out earth. After the funeral party has left, the frame with its curtains can be readily lifted out of the grave, and folded into relatively small space for storing.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make. such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A device of the character described, comprising side and end members, each of said members comprising tubes having longitudinal slots therein, rods in the ends of the tubes, pins in said rods projecting through the slots, the rods of the end members and side members secured together, and curtain supporting rings on all of said members, substantially as described.
