To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR A. CHANEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rimer, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to match safes, and the primary object of the invention is to furnish a safe or pocket receptacle with means, in a manner as will be hereinafter set forth, for automatically shifting matches in the safe to a position that they are simultaneously exposed and ignited, whereby a cigar, pipe or cigarette can be lighted, without removing the match from the safe and without striking the same.

Another object of this invention is to provide a match safe or pocket receptacle with novel means for feeding matches into position to be withdrawn from the safe or ignited, without opening the lid or cover of the safe.

A further object of the invention is to provide a match safe or pocket receptacle of the above type that is simple inconstruction, safe and convenient for use, and highly efficientfor the purposes for which it is intended.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the match safe, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a. side elevation of the safe, Fig. A is a plan of the same, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the match safe.

A match safe in accordance with this in vent-ion comprises a rectangular casing 1 having an upper open end 2 and the bot-tom thereof round, as at 3. The casing, adjacent to the rounded bottom 3, has a horizontal artition 4 and this partition contiguous to the front wall 5 is provided with an opening 6. Extending into the opening 6 is the lower cup-shaped end 7 of a match elevating device 8, said device having the upper end thereof provided with a pin 9 extending through a. vertical slot 10 provided therefor in the front wall 5 of the casing. The outer end of the pin 9 has a button 11, whereby the device can be easily shifted within the casing.

Arranged within the casing is a feeding device comprising a vertical plate 12 and interposed between said plate. and the rear wall 13 of the casing are coiled compression springs 14 adapted to force the plat-e 12 toward the front wall 5, and thereby feed matches 15, placed within'the casing, toward the front wall 5, whereby the lower end of each match will be carried into the cupshaped lower end 7 of the elevating device 8.

Hinged or pivotally connected, as at 16 to the upper edge of the rear wall 13 is a lid or cover 17 and this lid or cover is adapted to be retained in a closed position by an ordinary and well known type of catch 18. The lid or cover 17, adjacent to the front wall 19 thereof, is provided with a central opening 20 and said lid or cover has angularly disposed deflectors '21 extending from the bottom of the lid to the opening 20, whereby when one of the matches 15 is shifted upwardlyinto the lid or cover, it will be guided through the opening 20.

Mounted upon the lid or cover 17 at diametrically opposed sides of the opening 20 are pointed striking or igniting members 22 with which the head 23 of one of the matches 15 is adapted to contact with such force as to scratch or ignite the head, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

To fill the match safe, it is only necessary to open the lid 17 force the feeding plate 12 toward the wall 13 andplace the matches within the casing with the lower or plain ends thereof resting upon the partition l. The lid can then be closed and the match safe is ready for use. The outermost match will rest upon the elevating device, and to raise the same it is only necessary to push upwardly upon the button 11. The match will be ignited by the members 22 and after being used it can be immediately blown out and withdrawn from the lid or cover. The matchignited by the members 22 is elevated a sufficient distance above the lid to permit of a portion of the match burning and then being withdrawn after having served its purpose. 7

' The match safe in its entirety can be made of light and durable material, of various sizes and suitably ornamented and finished.

What I claim is A match safe compr sing a casing, a transried by the lower end of versely extending support near one end thereof and projecting from one side wall and terminating ata point removed from the other side wall of said casing, said casing having an open and a closed end, a lid hinged to the open end of said casing for closing it and provided at one end with an opening having angularly disposed deflectors mounted therein, striking protuberances carried by the lid exteriorly of said opening, a longitudinally shiftable arm arranged against the inner face of the other side Wall of said casing and slidably connected thereto, a cup-shaped extension carsaid arm and positioned between the free end of said support and thatwall to which said arm is connected, said extension constituting means for elevating a match into the openin whereby said match will be shifted by the deflectors into striking engagement with said protuberance, a longitudinally extending laterally movable follower arranged within said support and lid, a pair of coiled springs operating against said follower for forcing the matches into said extension.
