MATCH-SAFE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Not/123, 1915.
Application filed November 28, 1914. Serial No. 874,435.
To all whom 1 may concern Be it known that I, CnsLAw S'rANISLAw Cnenowsnr, a citizen of Russia, residing at. Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to match safes, and it has particular reference to they type of match safes which are known as.singl`e delivery7 safes.
The present invention has for its object to produce a match safe of simple and imprcved construction from which, at each operation, only a single match may be obtained.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the class described wherein the removal of the match causes the same to be ignited.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the class described whereby the operation of removing and igniting matches will actuate the delivery mechanism so that by theremoval and igni-A tion of one match the second match will be placed in position for delivery.
A further object of the invention is `to produce a device of the character described wherein simple and ecient means are. provided for locking the delivery mechanismso that children and others not acquainted with the unlocking mechanism will not succeed in obtaining matches from the device.
With these and other ends inview which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con-- sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterationskand modifica tions within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing a device constructed ini accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line-` 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4E is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 3, and
showing the working parts of the device in initial or normal position, the match lighter having been detached. Fig. 5 is a transverseV sectional view similar to Fig. 4, but-showing the working parts in position for delivering a match. Fig. G is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 3.` Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view taken through the match lighter on the line 7-7 in Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a perspective detail view of the igniter detached from the match lighter. Fig. 9 is a perspective detail view showing. the match supporting pla-te detached. Fig. l0 is a perspective detail view showing the oscillatory valve or match delivery member detached. Fig. ll is al detail view in elevation showing the inside of the cover, and the locking mechanism associated therewith. Fig. l2 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 12-12 in Fig. 6.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.`
A match containing hopper 20,. which is preferably tapering, as shown, in order that one end may accommodate the heads of the matches, is secured on a supporting plate 21, the latter being shown as providedA with keyhole slots 22 to engage headed nailsor other supporting devices. The hopper contains a bottom plate 23 which is shown as provided with a lug 24fattached to the plate 2l and serving to secure the bottom plate 23 in somewhat inclined position soA that the matches whichV in operation are supported on said plate will naturally gravitate toward one side thereof. rlhe bottom plate 23, which is preferably constructed of resilient sheet metal, is formed with arms 25 connected together by a longitudinal strip 26 forming a U-shaped member which may be moved, by bending or tlexingfthe arms 25, independently of the main ,body plate 23; said plate is also provided with down-struck arcuate resilient tongues 27, each having a downturned terminal lug. 2S. The plate 23 is so shaped and positioned` that one side edge thereof shall contact-with the wall of the hopper, while the opposite side edge or rather that of thestrip 26` will be slightly spaced from. the wall portion ofi the hopper.4
Pivoted on the rear side of the plate 21` with the axis of the pivot member 29 inf alinement with the aXis of. the hopper is anA approximately semi-circular plate 304 with whichl are connected arcuate plates,` 31 and 32 that extend through slots in the plate 21, it -being understood that the arcuate plates 31, 32 are concentric with the axis of the pivot V29V and that the slots 33, 34 through which said plates extend are likewise concentric with the axis of the pivot and of sufficient length to permit the plate 30 and related parts to rock about the axis of the pivot. The arcuate plate 31 contacts and is inl slidable engagement with the wall of the hopper and said plate 31 has a longitudinal slot 35 which is normally or initially in registry` with a slot 36 in the bottom of the hopper. The arcuate plate 32 is positioned between the body portion of the bottom plate 23 and the arcuate downturned tongues 27, the downturned lugs 28 of said tongues pressing lightly on the upper surface of the arcuate plate 31. Adjacent to the ends of the slot 35 are formed upturned stops 37 and along one side ofv said slot is formed a downturned flange 37 A back plate 38 is connected with the plate 21 for vertical slidable movement with respectthereto, and said back plate between which and the front plate 21 the rockingl plate 30 is positioned is provided with a recess 39 Aforming a shoulder or Offset that engages a projection or lip 40 atV one side of the rocking plate. A spring 42 is provided, one end of said spring being connected at 43 with the rocking plate 30, and the other end of said spring being in engagement with the shoulder'or offset 44 formed at the upper edge of the recess'39 in the back plate 38. It will be' seen that by movement of the said back plate in a downward direction, the
plate 30 with related parts will be rocked about the axis of its pivot, while upon release vof downward` stress on the back plate, the latter will be retracted upwardly to its initial position by the action of the spring 42. Y The back plate 38 is provided with struckup lugs 45 that extend through a slot 46 in the front'plate 21. Between said lugs and directly beneath the delivery slot 36 of the hopper is 'supported a'match lighter M made 'preferably' of a piece'` of sheet metal bent to yform side wings or walls 47 and a downwardly extending smoke shield 48. The side walls. 47, together with the back portion 49, constitutes ther housing wherein is pivotally mounted an igniting device comprising three relatively sharp blades 50, between which two pivotV plates 51 are held, the said blades and plates being connected together by a rivet 52, and the igniting member being pivoted in the housing on a pin 53, a spring 54 being provided whereby the lower end of the igniter is thrown in a forward direction within the housing. The side walls of the latter are flared upwardly so as to be capable of receiving a. match when dropped through the slot 36, and the forward edges of the walls 47 are slightly converged so that the match will be retained in the lighter by the engagement of the match head with the convergent side walls. It will be readily seen that the match may be ignited and detached by moving it downwardly between the side walls of the housing. The teeth of the serrated plates 51 increase progressively in size from the upper toward the lower ends of said plates in order that the match head will be engaged gradually thereby without danger of being suddenly torn or detached which might lead to the obstruction of the lighting device.
A cover C' is connected by means of a hinge 55 with the front end of the hopper at one side thereof, said cover comprising a front plate 56 and a rear plate 57 which are connected together pivotally by an axial pin 58. The front plate 56 has a flange 59 forming the outer wall of an annular recess.
60, said flange being provided with a catch 61 adapted to engage a struck-up lug 62 on the wall of the hopper for the purpose of retaining the cover in closed position. The hopper, it will be observed, is provided at its forward end with an annular groove or depression 63 wherein is guided a iiange 64 formed at the front edge of the arcuate plate 31. rhe outer cover member 56 is also provided with a struck-up lug or projection 65 as best seen in Fig. 3. The rear or inner cover member 57 is provided with a notch or cut-out portion 66 at one end of which is secured one end of a spring 67, said spring carrying at its other end a shoe 68 that conforms to the shape of the groove or channel 63. By the action of the spring 67 the shoe 68 is normally moved out of the path of the arcuate plate 31, so that the plate 30 may be rocked without hindrance. By slightly rocking the cover member 56 about its axis the lug or projection 65 will press outwardly against the spring 66, moving the shoe 68 into the path of the arcuate plate 31 and particularly of the flange 64 of said plate, thus locking or securing the match delivery mechanism against rocking movement, and consequently preventing matches from being obtained from the container.
In the operation of this device a downward pull upon the match lighter M will move the sliding back plate 38 downwardly,
causing the plate 3() and related parts to be rocked about its axis. The plate 32 striking against the resiliently supported strip 26 will raise the latter and permit a match to pass down onto the arcuate plate 31. Then downward stress on the housing of the lighter is released, the parts will be restored by the spring 42 to initial position, and the match being engaged by the downward flange 37', will be discharged through the slot 36 into the upper end of the lighter where it will occupy the position shown in F ig. 3 of the drawings. In order to subsequently operate the device the projecting end of the match is seized, and in the act of striking the match the lighter moved downwardly, thereby actuating the delivery mechanism, the operation being thenceforth repeated at will.
When safety matches are used, a suitable composition on which such matches may be ignited may be placed in the housing of the match lighter in place of the igniting device previously described.
The improved device may be made in many attractive andornamental patterns, and it may be readily combined with ash trays and like devices for the convenience of smokers and others.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is zl. In a device of the class described, a container having a match supporting bottom member, a front plate on which said container is mounted, a back plate slidable with respect to the front plate, a rocking plate interposed between the front and back plates and adapted to be oscillated by engagement with the slidable back plate, a retracting spring for said rocking plate and back plate, and members extending from the rocking plate through the front plate within the container and adapted to cooperate with the match supporting bottom member to effect delivery of matches, one by one, said front plate being provided with arcuate slots for the passage of the members connected with the rocking plate, and
the container being provided with a slot in the bottom thereof through which matches may pass.
2. The combination with a single delivery match safe having a delivery slot, of actuating means including a vertically movable match lighting element supported in proximity to the delivery slot and adapted to receive' matches discharged therethrough, said lighting element comprising a housing having upwardly ared side walls to receive the match therebetween, said side walls being forwardly converged to retainV the match, and a pivotally supported spring actuated igniting member within the housing.
3. A single delivery match safe comprising a container having a delivery slot and a hinged lid, delivery means including an oscillatory element within the container, a vertically slidable element, and a match lighting element carried by the vertically slidable element and supported thereby in proximity to the delivery slot to receive matches discharged therethrough; said lid including a pivoted member and a spring supported shoe carried thereby and adapted to be placed in the path of the oscillatory member of the delivery means to obstruct the operation thereof.
In testimony whereof l airiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
