Description

H. E. WHITE.
EXPANDED METAL STRUCTURE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB.3, 1911.
1,008,377,, F v Patented Nov. 14,1911.
To all whom it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIo HERBERT E. WHITE, 0]? YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO'IHE GENERAL FIREPROOF- ING COMPANY, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, A CORPORATION OHIO.
EXPANDED-METAL STRUCTURE.
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. WHITE, of Youngstown, Mahoning county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement' in Expanded-Metal Structures, of which the following is a full, clear,- and exact description, reference being had to the ac- I companying drawings, forming part of specification, in which,-
Figure 1 ma perspectlve new of a portion of a blank used in the manufacture of my invention; Figs. 2 and 3' are similar views illustrating successive operations upon the blank; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the expanded structure; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the same. I
My invention has relation to expanded metal structures, and more particularly to structures which are adapted for use in building construction either for lathing'or reinforcing purposes. 7
One objection to material of this kind has been that when used in a roofing 'or floor there is not suflicient metal in it to giv'e'the desired reinforcing action; and the object of my invention is to provide a structure of this character having .an increased amount of metal therein, whereby the objection is overcome.
In the-manufacture of structures under my, invention, I take a sheet metal blank of any desired width, and which has rolled therein any desired number of solid longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs 2, these ribs bein preferabl, though not necessarily of such orm that t eywill project equally at both sides of the metal sheet. The sheet is next subjected to a die or pressing action to give it the form shown in Fig. 2, in which it has a plurality of deep ribs 3. In the structure illustratedin the drawing, the ribs 2 are so located that when the ribs 3 are formed the ribs 2 will lie at the bottom of Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 3, 1911. Serial No. 306,368.
at the upper edges of the. deep-ribs 3, and
also form intermediate-each two adjacent series of cuts a shallow rib 6, which faces Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
preferably form the short reverse bands 5.
toward the same-side of the structure as. the
reverse bends 5. The sheet is then expandedin any usual or suitable way to form the fin: ished structure, a portion of which is shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The provision of the shah low ribs 6 and the reverse bends 5 cause the slats 7 of the expanded sections to form "half bends or twists in the expanding operation, which greatly-strengthens'the structure.
It will be understood that my invention is ,not limited to the preciseform of structure which I have shown in the drawings, but is applicable generally to the expanded metal structures of this general-class, in which it is desirable to provide the structure with an increased amount of metal for reinforcing Y purposes. 7
What I claim is 1. An expanded metal structureformed from a plate of a non-uniform section having bar portions, the sheet portions between the bars having expanded sections and the bar portions being bent out of the flat plane of the sheet to form deep ribs along which J the bars extend longitudinally to constitute reinforcements, substantially as described.
2'. An expanded metal structure formed from a plate of non-uniform section having bar portions, the bar portions projecting at both sides of the flat plane of the sheet, the
sheet portions between the bars having expanded sections, and the bar portions being bent out of the flat plane of the sheetto form deep ribs along which the bars extend longitudinally to form reinforcements; substantially as described.
3. An expanded metal structure having expanded portions and non-expanded corrugated portions, the latter having solid longitudinally extending ribs, portions of which project at each side of the metal forming the corrugations; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
