In the accompanying drawings which are hereby made a part hereof: Figure 1 is a perspective, showing my novel guard emapplied to a counter." Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail View, partly in section and partly in elevation, showing one of the brackets or shelf-supports of the guard and also showing the arm on the upright member of the shelf-support as turned outward so as to,

make the shelf extend a maximum distance outward or forward with respect to the counter. 3 Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken at a right angle to Fig. 2 and illustrating the manner in which the plateglass bars are attached to the upright member of the intermediate bracket'or shelf support, and also showing the apertures in the upright member for the reception of metallic bars when such bars are used in lieu of the plate-glass bars, as is shown Fig. 4.

Referring by letter to the said drawings:

A is a counter which may be of the ordinary construction or any other construction consonant with the purpose of my invention.

B is the shelf of my novel counter-guard which is preferably of marble, though I would have it understood that it maybe made of wood, glass, metal, or any other suitable material without affecting my invention or involving departure from the scope thereof as claimed.

C C are the end. brackets or shelf supports of the guard, and D is the intermediate bracket or shelf support comprised in the guard. Each of the said brackets or shelf supp rts'comprises a fixture a fixedly connecte to the face of the counter at a slight distance below the top thereof and having a vertical bore 6, an upright member, preferably tubular as shown, extending through the saidbore 6 of the fixture a, and having by preference an ornamental lower end ap 'purtenance 0v and also having diametrically opposite depressions d in its upper portion,

a set screw 6 bearing in the fixture a and ex-' tending through the wall of'the bore 5 and designed to be 'fixed against the upright member to adjustably fix the same in the fixture and at the height desired, and an arm f mounted on the upper end of the upright member and designed to be fixed thereto in an adjustable manner by a set screw 9, and

having at its ends upstanding projections h, designed to rest in recesses 71 in the underside of the shelf B, Fig. 6, with a view to preventing casual horizontal slipping or displacement of the said shelf. The upright member of each of the end brackets C- is lettered j, and the upright member of the intermediate bracket D is lettered j. Each of the upright members j-is provided in its inner sidec'. e., its side'ad acent the intermediate bracket, with three (more or less) apertures In, Figs. 1 and 2, and as shown in said figures, a channeled support E, preferably formed of sheet-metal and closed at its bottom Z, is 'detachably connected to the said inner side by screws m. The "upright member j of the intermediate 'bracket D is provided in its opposite sides with apertures 6 the said apertures being arranged in three (more or less) pairs and the apertures comprised in each pair being alined as shown. It will also be noted by reference to Fig. 3 that the upright member 7'? of the intermediate bracket 1) is provided with two supports E similar to the one hereinbefore referred to, the saidsupports E being connected to the member 9' by suitable screws m.

In addition to the elements thus far specifically described, the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 comprises two bars F of plate-glass or other glass suitable to the purpose. Each of the said plate-glassqbars-i-s arranged at its outer end in the support E of one end bracket C, and at its inner end in one of the supports E of the intermediate bracket D, and hence it will be manifestth-at there is. no-liability of the said barbeing accidentally displaced while the counter-guard is in use.

By reason of the construction shown in I Figs. l to' 3, it will be manifest that'an efficientjcouhtet-guard is provided and onethatis calculated to enhance ratherthan detract from the. finished appearance. of a I counter while. effectually performing the functions ordinarily possessed by counter-,-

guards. It will also be understood that because of the adjustable fixing of the upright members of the brackets in the fixtures a .thereof, and through the medium of the set screws 6, the arms f and the shelf B thereon may be adjustably fixed at various heights' above the top of the counter to'suit different conditions. In Fig. l, the major portion of the shelf B is made to overhang the counter,

this because of the major portions of the arms f being extended inward or rearward from the upright members of the brackets and so as to overhang-the top of the counter. It will be noticed,' however, by reference to Fig. 2, that the arms f may bereversedand .may be adjustably fixed in reversed position on the upright members andso as to cause the major or longer portions .of the said arms to extend outward or forward-from.

The upright members of thebrackets are preferably of circular form in cross-section to permit of the arms f being swung horizontally on the upright members from one position to the other after the set screws 9 are loosened.- The said formation of the upper ends of the upright members is not, however, essential;

ma'smuch as the end stated may be attained by removing the arms from the upright members and replacing the arms in reversed position on the upright members.

When it is desiredto employ longitudinal metallic bars F Figs..4; and 5, in lieu of the glass bars F shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the said glass bars -F and the supports E therefor are removed from the upright members of the brackets, and the metal rods F or rods of any other suitable material are placed in 7 the apertures inthe upright members of the end brackets and intermediate bracket, in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and -5that is to say, the end portions of the said bars are arranged in the upright members of the end brackets, while the intermediate portions of the bars are made to extend through and are supported by the upright member of the intermediate bracket.

'It will be gathered from the foregoing ter-guard is such that either glass bars F may be employed, or bars such as F, and that when the guard is equipped with glass guards F, it may be readily changed so as to comprise in lieu of the bars F, bars such as F ,-and ,vice versa; it being simply necessary when the guard embodies the construetion shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and it is desired'to change to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, to remove the bars F and apply the supports E and the glass bars F to the upright members of the brackets. It

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patcut, is:

1. In a counter-guard, the combination with brackets comprising horizontal fixtures adapted to'be attached at their rear ends to the face of a counter and having vertical bores in their forward portions and also having set screws bearing in and extending.

through the walls of the said bores, and vertical' members extending through the bores of the fixtures and adjustably fixed to the fixtures by the set screws thereof; of bars carried by the vertical'members' of the braokets and extending between the vertical members-and adjustable vertically together with said members in a' plane in front of the counter to which the horizontal fixtures are attached.

2, In a. counter-guard, the combination of spaced brackets comprising upright portions and upright holders on the sides of said upright portions; the said holders being of U- shape in horizontal section and closed at their lower ends and open at their upper ends, and a glasscbar extending between two of the holders and having its ends arranged in theholders and supported on the closedlower ends thereof.

3. In a counter guard the. combination with brackets adapted to be attached to a counter and having upright members and also having reversible arms detaohably fixed on the upper ends of the upright members, each of said arms having a long portion at one side of the upright member and a short portion at; the opposite side of said member; of bars carried by and extending between the upright members of the brackets, and a shelf supported on the arms of said brackets.

4. In a counter-guard, the combination with brackets comprising fixtures adapted to be attached to a counter, upright members adjustably fixed to the fixtures and'adjustable vertically with respect to the same, and reversible arms detachably fixed on the upper ends of the upright members, each of said arms having a long portion at one side of the upright member and a short portion at the opposite side of said member; of bars portions thereof, and also having reversible arms mounted on said upright members and provided with set screws to seat in the .de-. pressions thereof, each of'said arms having a long portion at one side of the upright 1 member and a short portion at the opposite side of said member; of bars carried by and extending between the upright members of the brackets, and a shelf supported on the arms ofsaid brackets.
