NEEDLE-THREADER.

Be it known that I', WILLIAM JAMES ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, and

a resident of Plainfield, in the county of` Union and State of New Jersey, havev invented a new and Improved Needle- Threader, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l

My invention `relates to needle threaders, and ithas for its object to provide one having a handle, with a guideway in which a member carrying a .plunger is adapted to travel, 'a member carrying a thread catcher being pivoted to the handle, and having means for reciprocating the member carrying the plunger'.

Another object of my invention is to provide a spacing arm adjustably mounted on the handle adapted to abut against thebottom of a needle bar for holding the plunger in alinement'withthe eye of a needle;

Still other objects of the invention will yappear in the following specification, in which the is disclosed.

In the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, shown in position for service; Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2--2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device; and Fig. 5 sanend view of the device.

By referring to the drawings itl will be seen that a handle 5 is provided, having a transverse slot 6, which serves as a guideway, and which is connected with a Vertical slot 7 extending through va terminal of the handle. A member 8 is mounted for travcling in the horizontal transverse slot6, this member 8 being provided with projecting end members 9, which prevent the member 8 from becoming displaced laterally, while permitting the said member 8 to move longitudinally freely in the said, slot 6. There is also secured to this member 8, a laterally eX- tending arm 10, having a recess 11 and to the outer end of the member 8, there is secured a plunger 12, adapted to move outwardly in the vertical slot 7.

A. spacing arm 20'is pivoted tothe handle-5 at 21, there being a slot 22 in this spacing arm 20, in which 1s disposed a screw 23, which meshes in a threaded orifice in the handle 5. This spacing arm 20 has a horizontal flange 24,. having a -vertical slot 25.

In using the device the spacing arm 20 is adjusted'by means of the screw 23,;so that when the needle 26 is disposed in the verti- `cal slot 25, and the horizontal ange'24 is disposed against the vbottom of the needle bar 27, t-he plunger 12 will be disposed on a plane with the eye 28 of the needle 26.

This having been done the thread -29 is disposed in the vertical slot, and the handle 5 is moved so thatthe plunger 12 will be disposed in the direction of the eye 28 of the needle 26. This having been done, the operator moves the member 14 by means of l the lateral Wings 15, so that the slotted arm -18 will move across the end of the handle thread through the eye 28 of the needle 26,

as the plunger 12 is Withdrawn therefrom.

Having thus described my invention I lclaimas new and desire tov secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a needle `threader a handle having a guideway, a member carrying a plunger mounted for moving in the guideway, a

member pivoted to the handle having means for moving the first-mentioned member in the guideway, and an arm having a hook for catching the thread mounted rlgidly on the second-mentioned member.

2. In a needle threaderja handle having aguideway, a member carrying. a plunger mounted for moving in the guide'vvay, a member pivoted to the handle and having means for vmoving the Erst-mentioned meniber in the guidevvay,an armnrounted on the second-mentioned member for moving therewith in the same plane, and a. hook mounted on the arm for catching the thread.

slotted arm adapted .to move past the end of the plunger, and a hook secured to the slottedarm for catching the thread.

5. In a needle threader a handle having a guidevvay, and a slottedjterminal, a member having an arm and carrying a plunger adapted to travel in the gideway, the plunger being adapted to move outwardly in the slot, a member articulated tothe handle having means for engaging the arm for operating the first-mentioned member, .a.v thread catcher mounted on the second-mentioned member, and a spacing arm secured to the liandle` and adapted to vabut against the -needle bar of a sewing machine for holding the plunger on a plane With the eye of needle mounted. on the needle bar..v

6. In a needle threader a handle having a guidevvay, a member having-a plinger and an arm adapted to move along the guideivay,

a second member pivoted to the handle hav# ing means for engaging the arm for moving the first-mentioned member in the guideway, and an arm having a hook for catching the thread mounted rigidlyon the second-mentioned member.

7. In aneedle threader a handlehaving 'a guidevvay, a member carrying a plunger mounted inr the guideway or moving longitudinally thereof, and a second member `,lrvoted to the handle for moving at right angles to the directionvof movement of the plunger, means on the second-mentioned vmember for operating the irst-mentioned WILLIAM JAMES Roenes.
