JAGOB DUMP, OF KINGSTON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 100,873, dated March 15, 187 O.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-WHEEL HUBS.
The Schedule referred to in these LettersPatent and. making part of the same.
"I, JACOB DUMPfof'Kingston, Ross c0unty, Ohio,
have invented a new'and useful Metallic Hub for Wagons and Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
General Description with Reference to the Drawings. Figure 1 is a perspective View of the two castings which compose my hub, detached,
Figure 2 is an axial section of the hub.
My hub comprises an ,inner section or casting, A, and an outer section or casting, B, both having the customary bore or central aperture, 0, for the axle spindle.
The portion or casting A has around its periphery a series of equidistant indentations, D, which, when closed-by the application of the casting B, constitute the 'moi'tices to receive the tenons E of the spokes E.
The casting B has a counter-bore, I), which tit-s over the central cylindrical portion a of the casting A.
The portion or casting B has also an annular tongue, F, which, when the hub is put together, enters corresponding grooves, G and e, in the casting A, and in the front edges of the spokes, so as to hold the two castings and also the spokes all firmly in place.
Both castings are traversed longitudinally and at equal distances by screw-bolts H H H, having bent heads h which come flush with the periphery of the casting B and nuts I, which engage on said bolts in rear of the casting A.
In practice the spoke-tenons are made somewhat widerthan the mortices in the casting A, so as to be susceptible of being tightened at any time by simply turning the nuts I.
Two part metallic hubs, thus united by bolts, are cheaper and easier to manufacture and also stronger than those which are united by'a cut thread.
Ola-tin.
I claim herein as my invention- I The combination of the inner section A, constructed with indentations D and grooves G, and the outer sect-ion B, constructed with a couuter-boreband tongue F, the two members being connected by screw-bolts H h and nuts I, so as to constitute a compound hub, all substantially as represented and described.
-In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JACOB DUMP. Witnesses ;.x
