Description

PATENT OFFICE JACOB DUMP, OF KINGSTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC HUBS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,704, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB DUMP, of Kingston, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented a certain Improvement in Metallic Hubs, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of wagon hubs which is constructed of cast-iron; and my improvement consists in making such hubs of two separable pieces or members, of which the larger one is provided with sockets or mortises for the reception of the spokes, and is also furnished with a fem ale screw with which is engaged a male screw that is cast upon one end of the outer or smaller member of the hub, and said smaller member has an annular rib upon it, which, when the separate parts are united, is forced into the tenons of the spokes, and thereby maintains the latter securely in their proper positions.
Figure l is a perspective view of the diferent members of my hub in a detached condition, and Fig. 2 is an axial section of the same when united.
My hub consists of two cast-iron members, A B, of which the smaller and outer one, or thimble A, is tubular, and is provided with a male screw, (l, that is adapted to engage with the female screw D of the member B. The inner end oi' the thimble A is furnished with an annular rib or projection, a, which, when forced into a gain, e, of spokes E, serves to strain them tightly, and also to lock them immovably in their proper position. The member B is provided with the customary radial mortises F for the reception of the spokes E, and, if preferred, the parts A B may be furnished with webs G H for the purpose of affording an extended bearing for the tenons of said spokes and also for imparting additional strength to the hub without materially increasing its weight.
To form a wheel with my improved hub it is only necessary to insert the spokes E in the mortises F and then screw the thimble A into the member B, and as soon as the rib a becomes embedded, either in the tenen of the spoke or the gain e, said spokes are strained and secured by a single operation.
The thimble A may be screwed home either with a wrench, a spanner, or any other suitable implement.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the hub B and screw-threaded thimble A, provided with a projecting rib, a, and adapted to be screwed within said hub for the purpose of more firmly securing the spokes, the parts being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes specied.
In testimony of which invention Ihereunto set my hand.
JACOB DUMP.
