AMES nAnIoN cunumes, or EvA'NsvILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR or oNE-II Lnmo WILLIAM MICHAEL HAHN, or EVANSVILLE, INDIAN FU SE ATTACHMENT FOB ELECTRIC LIGHTS.
Specification of Letters'ratent. Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Application filed January 31, 1911. Serial no. 505,734;
of a fuse for each individual lightthatis secured to the handle of the lamp so'that I should the fuse burn out it can be quickly replaced with very little trouble and without making it necessary to-stop the current while doing so.
My invention will be, described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which 1 e F ig ure 1 is a View of a portable electric light showing my improved fuse attachment mounted thereon, Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectlOllitlVlGW of the fuse attachment, and Fig. 3, a cross section.
In the drawlngs similar reference characters will be usedto designate correspond-.
ing partsin the severalviews.
a My improved attachment is installed on the handle 1 of a portable electric light or torch '2, said handle being made preferably o'fnon-conducting material such as rubber, fiber, or the like and formedvtubular to receive the power wires A. v
, My invention consists in forming the handle 1 with a fuse box 3, having angular con ta'ct pieces 4 secured in its ends to which the power wires 'Aand the wires connected to the light 2 are secured.
5 indicates a plate that forms a cover for the fuse block, also made of non-conducting material and having side flanges 6 and a longitudinal spine or rib 7 in its middle and forming two channels 8 in the under side of the plate.
. 9 indicates contact pieces formed of spring material, such as copper strips, bent'to angular form as shownin Fig. 2, and secured in the ends of channels 8, the projecting flanges 10 of the strips serving to engage.
wardly extending side flanges and an interthe contact pieces 4 and hold the plate 5 from displacement. 11 ndmats the fuses secured to the contact pieces 9 by means of screws or other fastening means 12.
Whenin operation it will'be understood that should the 'torch or its connections touch a metal structure, such as a piece of machinery, so that the current is shortcircuited, the effect would be to burnout one or both fuses 1 1, but as said fuses are located only'in -the'bran'ch circuit to the single lamp or torch, only the one lamp will bedarkened, and the location of the fuseboat on the handle of the torch makes the replacing of the burned out .fuse a simple matter, easily and quickly accomplished.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In combination. with a portable electric light having a. handle formed with a recess, contact pieces secured in said recess, the, power wires and light-circuit wires secured to said contact pieces, a removable cojverior said recess, spring contact pieces secured to said cover and adapted to engage the contact pieces in the recess and hold the cover from displacement, and fuses connecting said spring contact pieces on the cover. 2. combination with a portable electric light having: a handle formed with a re-.. cess, contact pieces secured in the ends of said recess, the power wires and light cir-. cuit Wire's secured to said cont-act pieces, a removable cover for said'recess having downmediate spine or rib forming the inner side of the cover with two channels, spring contact pieces secured in said channels and adapted to engage the contact pieces in the recess and hold the cover from displacement, and fuses connecting said spring con-- tact pieces on the cover.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in the presence. of two witnesses. JAMES MARION CUMMINGS. Witnesses:
HARRY C. DODSON, EDMUND L. CRAIG.
