To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN MICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.

Cloud, in the county of Stearns, State of' Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to match safes, wherein provision is made for delivering the matches one at a time by the operation of adelivering mechanism, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device of this character of improved con struction and increased efficiency.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein provision is made for delivering the matches one at a time and likewise for storing the burned matches, to prevent them from being scattered about.

Another object of the invention is to provied a simply constructed device containing two receptacles, one for the unburned matches and from which the matches are arranged to be delivered one at a time, and another receptacle for the burned matches, each receptacle having an independently operated closure, so that the receptacles will be independently accessible.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on the line 44 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.

The improved device comprises a base member 10, a vertical back member 11 and vertical side members 1213. The side members are cut away at the lower portions as shown, and extending between the side members 12-13 intermediate their ends is an inclined transverse member 14, and rising from the member 14 to the upper ends of the side members 1213 and the rear member 11 is a division or partition 15, the member 15 dividing the upper portion of the device into two compartments, one to receive the matches which are to be delivered and the other to receive the burned matches.

The compartment which is to receive the matches is provided with a level floor 16, while the inclined member 14 forms the bottom of the othercompartment from which the unburned matches are'to be delivered.

In Fig. 3 the compartment from which the matches are to be delivered is illustrated, while the compartment into which the unburned matches are to be deposited is illustrated in Fig. 4.

The device is provided with a closed top 17 which extends over both of the compartments, and an aperture 18 is formed in the portion of the top 17 which extends over the compartment into which the burned matches are to be deposited, and providing means for the insertion of the burned matches. Connected to the front edge of the top member 17 is an L-shaped guard plate 19, while a similarly formed plate 20 is connected over the outer upper edge of the inclined member 14. The downwardly directed portion of the plate 19 and the upwardly directed portion of the plate 20 form guides for two closure members 2122.

The closure member 21 forms the front of the compartment from which the unburned matches are to be delivered, while the closure 22 forms the front of the compartment into which the burned matches are delivered. By this means the compartments are independently accessible, as the closures 2122 are slidable in opposite directions. To facilitate the operation of the closures 2122 they are provided with depressions 23-24 for the thumb or fingers of the operator.

A suspension eye 25 is connected to the member 11, to enable the device to be suspended from a wall, or the device may be arranged to stand upon the bottom member 10 as required. The portion of the inclined member 14 which is located beneath the compartment from which the matches which are to be delivered does not extend entirely to the rear member 11, as shown in Fig. 3, and is supported at its lower end by a transverse plate 26.

Extending transversely of the side members 1213 is a shaft 27 and mounted upon this shaft is a drum, and formed in the portion of the drum which is located beneath the delivery compartment is a longitudinal groove or pocket 29 large enough to receive a single match, as shown in Fig. 3.

Bearing upon the portion of the member 1 1 which extends beneath the delivery compartment is a sheet metal plate 30 having its lower end directed downwardly into the space between the inner edge of the member 14 and the rear member 11, as shown at 31. The lower inner edge of the curved portion 31 being located in close proximity to the periphery of the drum 28, and thus serving as a guide to conduct the match which is to be delivered into the pocket 29. The shaft 27 extends through the side member 13, and connected to this shaft externally of the member 13 is an arm 32, and connected to the arm is a spring 33 exerting its force to maintain the arm yieldably in its downward position.

A guide loop 34 is connected to the member 13 and extends over the arm 32 and limits its movement at the ends of its stroke as hereinafter explained. Pivoted at 35 to the member 13 is another arm or lever 36 having a finger plate 37 at one end and coupled by its opposite end to the free end of the arm 32 by a wire 38. Projecting from the top member 17 of the device is a stop 39 to limit the rearward movement of the arm 36. By this arrangement the spring 33 maintains the arm 32 and the drum 28 yieldably in their operate position, or with the drum in the position shown in Fig. 3 with the pocket 29 opposite the contracted space between the downwardly directed ends 31 of the blade 30 and the vertical inner face of the back member 11, and when the next supply of matches is deposited in the receptacle designed to receive them the lowermost match will fall into the pocket 29, and then when the lever arm 36 is moved forwardly the lever arm 32 is elevated against the resistance of the spring 33 and moves the pocket 29 into its downward position carrying the match which is for the time being within the pocket 29 with it and permitting it to drop upon the base member 10, this movement of the drum 28 cutting off the remaining matches and permitting one match only to be delivered.

hen the arm 36 is released after its operative movement the spring 33 instantly returns the arm 32 and the drum 28 to their former position or with the pocket 29 in position to receive the next match. It will be noted that the matches are caused to bear against the vertical wall 11, so one match only passes into the contracted throat caused by the downwardly directed portion 31 of the plate 30, and thus effectually prevents the matches from arching or becoming lodged in the receptacle. Thus no matter how many matches may be in the receptacle one only can by any possibility get into the passage formed by the portion 31. This is an important feature of the invention and adds materially to the value and utility of the device, and effectually prevents the lodging of the matches.

Vhat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising two receptacles open at the front end with vertical rear walls, one of said receptacles being adapted to receive unburned matches and the other receptacle to receive burned matches, slidable closures for the fronts of said receptacles, an inclined bottom for the unburned match receptacle with its inner edge spaced from the vertical wall, a wear plate upon said inclined bottom, the lower inner portion of said plate being curved downwardly and extending between the inclined bottom and vertical wall, said curved portion forming a guide to the match discharge from the receptacle and a drum mounted for rotation against said vertical wall and provided with a longitudinal match receiving pocket adapted to deliver rearwardly.
