AUGUST e. ZIESING, 'or WEEHAWKEN, NEW JERSEY.
Lemiers' Patent No. 100,833, ated March 15, 1870,
IMPROVEMENT yIN' LOCKS FOR SHIPS' PUMPS.
The Schedule refrrledto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same r'o all whom it may conceiz:
Be it known that I, AUGUST G. ZIEsING, of Weel `hawken, in thecounty of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Lock for Ships-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof,
which will enable others skilled inthc art to make 'and use the same, reference being had to the accorti'- panying drawings forming part ot' this specification, in
which the drawing represents asectional side view of .eportant items to ascertain` whether the vessels have sound bottoms, or whether they draw water. At present it is a common practice with dishonest persons to secretly apply the pumps and reduce the water `ini the hold, inl casejthe same should be rising during a pending bargain. AIf the pumps are effectively locked this fraudulent practice will bedefeated, and less risk incurred in the buying or hiring of vessels.
A, in the drawing, represents the barrel or cylinder of a ships pump. lhe same is of suitable kind.,
Before applying my-mproved lock, the pump-gear,
ti. e., the plunger-rod and valve must be removed from the barrel.
The lock consists of a perforated plate, B,'seeured to the lower end of a rod, O. w
This plate is let into the barrel, and the rod is then, I i ',by means of a chain,D, or other suitable device, locked to the upper end of the barrel to prevent the displacement of the plate B. v 5 l E01" this purpose a padlock, E, or other equivalent safety apparatus, is employed.
The water-in the hold can be measured through the holes in the plate B. A party desiring to ascertain the value of a ship will remove the pump-gearing, insert the plate B in the pump-barrel and lock -it thereto, measure the height of water in the hold at the time of' locking, and again "after several hours or days.
Without picking thelock the pump can, in the meantilne, not be applied.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire 'fo secure by Letters Patenti The perforated plate B and rod G, arranged as a lock for ships2 pumps, substantially as herein shown and described. i
A. G. ZIESING.
