To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE J. ENGERT and CHARLES R. HESSELTINE, citizens of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane, State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Floor and Bench Scrapers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to .which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates -to improvements in scrapers of the class employed in finishing floors, more particularly hard wood floors,

7 and for like purposes, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.

The invention further consists in providing a device of this character which may be employed upon a work bench for finishing certain classes of wood structures, and to which an extended handle device may be attached when the improved device is employed in finishing floors, and the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be folded into a relatively small space when not in use.

\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device in its open or operative position, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the socket portion of the improved device with the supporting members in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of the socket and scraper portion of the improved device, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the socket portion of the improved device, detached, Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the block portion of the socket, Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of the scraper blade, Fig.7 is an enlarged detail view illustrating a modification in the construction, Fig. 8 is a side elevation with the parts in folded positions.

The improved device comprises a main bar or handle member 10 having hand grips 1112 at the ends and with hand grip portions 13-14 spaced from the ends. Hinged plates 22-23 are bent inwardly as shown at 26-27 to bear over the block 24 and assist in holding the same in position.

The lower end of the vertical member 16 is detachably coupled to the outer face of the block 24 by a bolt 28 and thumb screw 29. The structure thus far described comprises the supporting frame and socket for the scraper blade, and may be readily disconnected and folded into the position shown in Fig. 8 when not in use, or when the device is to be stored or shipped.

The scraper blade is represented as a whole at 30 and bears against the inner face of the block 24, and is provided with a longitudinal slot 31 in its upper portion which fits over a holding bolt 32 which extends through the block 24. The bolt 32 is provided with suitable means for detachably clamping the scraper blade in position, and this holding means may be simply a wing nut 33, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7, or a cam device 3 1 may be attached to the bolt to accomplish the same purpose, as shown in Fig. 7. By employing the slot 31 in the scraper blade the latter may be adjusted vertically to any required extent to provide for the wearing away of the blade, and thus keep it in its proper operative position relative to the socket. The lower face of the socket 19 is extended to a point near the block 24, leaving room enough only for the passage of the scraper blade, as shown. By this simple means an efficient scraper device is produced, which may be arranged in open position, as shown in Fig. 1, and the blade adjusted as required. WVhen the improved device is not in use, or is to be shipped or stored, the holding bolt 28 is released and the member 16 folded between the members 10 and 17 into the position shown in Fig. 7. The socket 19 together with its side members 22-23 is constructed from a single piece of steel bent into the required shape, while the block 24 and the members 101716 will preferably be of Wood, but all the parts may be of metal if preferred.

The socket 19 forms an efiicient handle or grip to the device when the members 16 and 17 are detached, to enable the device to be employed as a hand scraper for use upon Work benches or in similar localities.
