DRIVING MECHANISM FOR WASHING-MACHINES.

Be it known that I, PAUL \V. PETERS, a citizen of the United States of America, and IQSlCltflt of Fort \Vayneoin the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Driving Mechanism for ashing- Hachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in driving mechanism for washing machines of that class in which an oscillating dolly, or agitator, is employed in conjunction with a rotating momentum wheel. and the object of the improvement is to afi'ord a construction wherein the lid of the suds-vessel. carrying the dolly. may he opened without disconnection of the actuating mechanism carried by the suds-vessel proper: This object is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1. is a side elevation of the machine with the momentum wheel shown partly cut away; and Fig. 2. is a detail view showing a verticalcent al section at a right angle to the plane of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, and. reterring now to the same: 1 is a. suds-vessel. and 2 is a lid, which, together with the toppiece 3, form the cover for the suds-vessel. Upon the lid is secured a bracket 4 which atl'ords bearings for the rocking shaft 5 and also for the dolly shaft 6, the former extending at right angles to the latter. The
rocking shatt has at its outer end an arm 7, and at its inner end a segment gear 8. The dolly shaft 6 has at its upper end a pinion t) that meshes with the gear 8, and
extends through the lid and supports the dolly 10.
Upon the side. of the suds-vessel is secured a bracket 11 having a slotted upper end 12 which is adapted to receive the projecting end 13 of the bracket 4- when the lid is in closed position. A thumb screw 1'! serves to secure the two brackets together. The bracket ll has projecting theret'rom three studs, l5,' Hi. and 17 respectively. and upon the stud -15 is mounted the operating lever 18. upon the stud 17 and meshes with the toothed hub of the momentum wheel so as to actuate the same. Thus the suds vessel constitutes a stationary support for the bracket 11 with the parts mounted thereon, and the lid constitutes ahinged member for the bracket- 4 carrying the rocking shaft.
The operating lever has an arm 22 that has a connection with the arm 7 0n the rocking shaft 5 by means of a link 23, and also with the driving gear 21 by means of a pitman 24. The hinges 25 connecting the lid and top-piece, and upon which the lid swings. are so located, and the respective lengths of the arm 7 and link 23 are such as to permit the lid to be opened without the necessity of disconnecting the arm and link orgother actuating parts of the mechanism.
The operating lever has two handle sock.- ets. 26 and 27 respectively, in either of which the handle 28 may be inserted, the
sockets are so disposed that when the handle is in the socket 26 it will extend vertically. and when in the socket 27 it will extend horizontally.
In the operation of this invention, a proper quantity of suds is placed in the suds-vessel, together with the articles to be cleansed, and the lid is then closed and secured by a fastener 29, also the bracket 4 is secured to the bracket 11 by the thumbserew 14. The mechanism is then set in motion by manipulating the handle to and fro. Thus, the operating lever actuates the momentum wheel through the medium of the pitman, driving gear and toothed hub; and the dolly through the medium of the link, arm. rocking shaft, segment gear, pinion and dolly shaft.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: s
