HATCH-COVER FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 16, 1911.

Serial No. 614,797.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORATIO N. IIERRIMAN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hatch-Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invent-ion being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to devices for fastening down hatch-covers of vessels, its object being to provide a device of this character which will be economical in its con struction and simple and efiicient in its operation.
The said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying my invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing :Figure 1 is a vertical axial section of a device embodying my invention, together with a fragmentary sect-ion of the hatchway of a vessel and cover therefor. Fig. 2 is a plan of the device, and plan of a fragmentary portion of the hatchway and cover. Fig. 3 is a section taken upon the plane indicated by line III-III of Fig. 1.
The combing A has secured thereto by means of suitable rivets and proj ecting horizontally therefrom, a bracket B, Fig. 1, which is formed with a slot having a vertical portion 5 and a horizontal portion 72. Seated in this slot is a horizontal pivotal pin C which forms the pivotal axis of a contractible and expansible fastening member C, slotted to receive the said bracket. The said member 0 consists of three parts, namely, an L-shaped pivotal part G a vertically sliding part C and a contracting bolt C The outer or normally vertical portion 0 of the member C is provided with a longitudinal threaded bore 0' which receives the bolt 0*. This portion 0 is furthermore provided with a groove 0 Fig. 3, parallel with the bore 0', into which project-s a tongue 0 formed in the sliding member C A cylindrical recess 0 formed in member C is adapted to receive the portion 0 of the pivotal part C The parts C and C may slide with reference to each other, but rotation of the one with reference to the other is prevented by means of the tongue and groove.
Forming an integral part of the member C is the inwardly projecting port-ion C which is adapted to project over the hatchway and cover, as is shown. The outer portion of the member C is furthermore provided with an aperture 0 through which the bolt C projects, the head of the latter resting upon the outside of this member.
The part C is provided with a seat 0 for the batten strip H and plate H, and is horizontal when the device is in its fastening position. Above this seat and fixed to the combing is a horizontal angle bar G forming an abutment for the batten strip H. The outer end of the bracket B is formed with an upwardly projecting lug b which prevents the horizontal displacement of the batten plate H when the device is in its nonoperative position and the strip is lying loosely in the bracket, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
When the device is in its operative position, the part C is placed so that the pivotal pin C is in the vertical portion of the slot 12, and the bat-ten strip H and batten plate H are placed intermediately of the seat 0 and the angle iron G, with the tarpaulin E in position between the strip H and angle G, and also between the hatch cover and inwardly projecting portion C of the part C as shown. By now screwing down the bolt C, it will be seen that the part C will clamp down the cover, and the part G secure the batten strip, batten plate and tarpaulin, between it and the angle G. To release the device, the bolt is unscrewed, whereupon the pin C drops down into the horizontal portion of the slot 5. This permits the member C to be drawn outwardly so as to permit its upper end to swing downwardly, allowing the inwardly projecting portion 0 to swing out of contact with the hatch cover, as will be readily understood.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a hatch-cover fastener, the combination with an expansible and contractible fas tening member pivotally mounted upon the hatch combing and adapted to project over the hatchway; of an abutment fixed to the said combing and projecting therefrom above the pivotal axis of said member; said member and abutment forming a seat for the batten.
2. In a hatch-cover fastener, the combination With a fastening member comprising an element pivotally mounted upon the hatch combing, a second element slidably mounted on said first named element and adapted to project over the hatch opening, and means adapted to draw said two elements toward each other; of an abutment fixed to said combing and projecting therefrom above the pivotal axis of said member; said pivotal element and abutment forming a seat for the batten.
3. In a. hatch-cover fastener, the combination of an expansible and contractible fastening member; a bracket fixed to and projecting from the combing, and provided With a horizontally elongated slot, said fastening member being pivot-ally mounted in said slot, and being furthermore adapted to project over the hatchway; and an abutment fixed to the combing and projecting therefrom above said bracket; the latter and abutment forming a seat for the batten.
4. In a hatch-cover fastener, the combina tion of an expansible and contractible fastening member; a bracket fixed to and projecting horizontally from the combing and provided With a horizontally and vertically elongated slot, said fastening member being pivo-tally mounted in the latter, and being furthermore adapted to project over the hatchway; said bracket and abutment forming a seat for the batten.
