In order that a full and co1nplete uncler standing 01 the invention 1nay be had, 1 have illustrated a preferred emboclirncnt of the same in the accompanying drawings, forming a art of this speoification, throughout the various views o1 which like reference characters rcfer to the sa1ne arts.
In these clrawings-Figure 1 is an end view cf a car emboclying thc invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sect-ion on line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section through the sidc portion of the vestibule part of the car; Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal section of a part of thc car end Wall; Fig. 5 is a similar view of another ortion of the end Wall; Fig. 6 indicates in enlargecl horizontal scction a part of the vestibule encl Wall; and Fig. 7 is a si1nilar view illustrating in section the housing or section f01 acconnnodating thc diaphragrn or vestibule passage-way curtain.
Referring to the various figures of the drawings, it Will be observed that the end Wall 01 thc car-body proper is suppliecl With a plurality of vertical channel posts 10 secureol in position at their lowcr encls loymeans 0f suitable angle brackets 11, and adjacent to the center door-way such cncl Wall has a pair of upright I- bea1n posts 12, 12. On onehalf of this end Wall I crnploy an inner metal plate 13 fastened to the inner fianges cf the posts 10 and 12, being bent adjaccnt to the post 12 first outwa1clly longitudinally o1 the car at 14 and then inwardly transversely of t-he car at 15. sarne portion of the car encl Wall is equipped with an outer 1netal covcr-plate 16 curved near the post 12 at 17 and bent so as to pro- This vicle a fiange 18 overlying ancl sccureol to thc flange 19 of the plate 13. The other portion of the end Wall has an inner plate 22 fastencd to thc flangcs of oho posls and ofl-sct acljacent 130 the C1001 so as to providecl a recess 23 for thc acconnnodation of the eclgc portion of the latter. This pa1t of the end Wall also has an outer 1netal cover-plate 2 1 riveted to thc posts ancl bent as shown in Fig. 5 so as to provicle an inwarclly-projecting flange 25 lying against thc flange 26 of the plate 22, such pair of fianges bcing rivetecl, weldecl, or otherwise clesirably fastenecl together. It Will, therefore, be apparent that the inner ancl outer finish o1 cover plates of this Wall are so bent ab the edges of the cloo1. to provide a suitable seat o1 recess for the acconnnodation and reccption Of the sa1ne.
The co1ncr post construction of the carbocly is o1ea1ly shown in Fig. 3, und, as I havc therein illustratcd, the platc 13 or 22, as the case 1nay be, is fastenecl by 1nea'ns of rivets: 27 to thc web 28 of an upright bent metal plate having a flange 29 of substantial proportions, to which the innen finish o1 1netal plate 30 is rivcted at 31. Thc platc 28 is bcnt to provide a seotion or ortion 32 parallcl to the web of the acljaccnt post 10, and is also bent outwarclly to for1n a part 33 at right angles to the part 32, and the oute1 edge of the fonncr is supplied with a flange 341 substantially parallel to the section 01 part 32. The outer plate 16 01 24:, as the case 1nay be, of the outer encl Wall of the car, is fastenecl or sccurecl t0 the (lange of ehe outermost channel post 10 by scrcws 35, o1 in any other approved manner, the plate projecting beyoncl the post to some little ex tent, as is clearly in(licatecl in Fig. 3. The outer marginal portion of such plate ancl the fiangc 34 are connectecl toget-her by a bent curvecl finish o1 corner plate 36 project-ing at 37 beyoncl thc art 33 of the plate or post ele1nent 28, whercby to slightly ovellap the exterior finish 38 of the car side, and as I have shown this plate 36 is fasteneol (lirectly to the flangc 341 by a number of rivets 39. The part of the plate or corner finish 36 acljacent to the outer Wall platc 16 is bent at 410 so as to provide a seat or cavity for the accommodation of t-he marginal portion 0f the vestibule Cl001 41, an0l also has a flange 42 fastenecl by countersunk rivets 43 to the plate 16, a spacing 01 filling plate 01' bar 44 being inserted between the tw0 part s if desirecl.
By n1eans 0f this construction I am enablecl f0 provicle a car end Wall simple in structure, light in weight, ancl economical t0 manufacture, ancl the corner posts 01' portions 0f the car possess sufiicient strength and rigidity although made 01' built up 0f a number of slnctmetal parts 01 elements, as indicatecl. The outer Wall cf the vestibule has a pair of upright channel posts 45 ab the sides 0f the vestibule passageway 46, ancl extencled outwarclly from each of such posts and fastened to its web by means of a IOW of rivets 46 is a sheet-rnet-al plate 47 of Single thickness, which al0ng its oute1 margin is received between the spaced, inwarclly-extcncled inner an(l outcr marginal portions 48 and 49 of a metal plate 50 bent to forma a hollow vestibule corner post, the two flanges 01 portions 48 and 49 and the intermediate marginal part of the plate 47 being secured 0r fastened together by a row 0f rivets 51. The plate 50 along the outer port-ion of the car is curved as shown in Fig. 3 to provide a neat and smooth finish, ancl iS ben a 52 t0 Supply a recess 0r cavity for the reception of the edge portion of the vestibule door 41. At its l0wer encl t-he inner Wall 53 cf each of said corner vestibule posts is fasteneol by means 0f bolts 54 t0 the end Wall 01T a hollow casting 55 suitably attached to the car underframing. If desired, each of the plates 47 may be supplied with a winclow opening 56, the glass in which iS held in place by any approved style cf glass retaining means 57 extending al0ng the margin 0f the aperture 56 and secureol by screws or rivets 58 to the plat-e 47. One of the posts 45, which, as is clearly shown, has its parallel flanges ext-encling inwardly 0f the Wall, and is supplieol with a U-shaped cover plate 59, the legs cf which plate overlap tl1e flanges cf the post and are riveted thereto at 60. Such cover plate aflords a conven ient ancl suitable means f0r the attachment cf the band brake mechanism 61 and the hook 01- loop 62 providccl f0r coperation With the handle 0f the vestibule passageway cu1tain. The companion channel post 45 has a Z-bar 0r strip 63 mounted in its trough 0r groove, and has one flange fastenecl t0 the web of the postby a series 0f rivets 64. T0 the other flange cf such Z-bar or strip I fasten by means 0f a 10W 0f rivets a flange 66 cf a curvecl plate G7, which in conjunction witl1 the bar 63 and tl1e adjacent portions of the posts 45, forms a neat and simple housing for the passage-way Curtain rolle1, n0t illustratecl, it being umlerstoocl that the curtain housecl in such casing 01 covering is int-cndecl ar1d adaptecl t0 cover the inne1 surfacc 0f the accorclion diaphragm (58, the inner end cf which is attached t0 tl1e two posts 45, und the outcr porti0n cf which is fasfened to the usual face plate (59. Another angle plate 70 is secure(l [0 the 0uter facc 0f the flangc 66 by tl1e rivets 65, ancl is also fastened against the oute1 surface 0f 0nc of the fianges 0f thc posts 45 by anothcr 10W of rivets 71.
T0 th0se skilled in this a1t it will bc apparent (hat the oufcr 01 end Wall 0f this vestibule is of extremely simple construction und light weight, yet at the sann: time possessing adeq uate strength for the purpose intenclcd, and presenting a neat appearance and finish. Owing t0 the fach that this outer Wall is composed of Single plates 47, if these f01 any 1eason beco1ne damaged 01 injurecl, such as by being dented 01' marred, they can bc readily 1epaired without at all clismantling such end-wall.
\Vhereas I have herein indicated one particular and especial embodiment of this invention, it is to be understoocl that the minor mechanical features herein illust-rated and described in detail may be modified within wide limits without sacrificing any 0f the aclvantages 0f the invention an(l without departing f10m its heart and substance.
I claim:
l. In a ca1 vest-ibule end Wall constructi0n, the combination cf an upright channel post, a bar securecl in the trough cf said post, and a vestibule passage curtain roller casing fastened t-o said bar, substantially as descr1bed.
2. In a car vestibule end Wall constructi0n, the combination cf an upright channel post with imvardly-presented flanges, a sheet-n1etal Wall plate fastened against the oufer surface 01 saicl p0st, a bar secured in thc trough cf said posta vestibule passageway curtain roller casing secure l to S{Li(l bar, ancl a cover plate fastened t0 said bar and to 0ne of the flanges 0f the ost, substantially as described.
In a ca1. body end Wall construction, the combination 0f upright p0sls, inner an(l outer sheet-1netal plates secured against the corresponcling surfaces cf said posts, said plates being bent in revcrse direclions and secured together in interlocking engagement at the ma1gin cf the end Wall door-way t0 provicle a door-jamb f01 the end Wall (1001, substantially as clescribed.
4. In a car body construction, the combination of an inner sheet metal end Wall plate, an outer sheet-metal end Wall plate, a bent sheet-metal plate fastened to said inner Wall plate and having a protruding fiangc aclapted t0 have the inner finish 0ftl1e car bocly si le-wall secured thereto, a plate fastened t0 the 1nargin 0f said oute1 end Wall plate and bent t0 form a corncr finish, and
means securing said corner finish and flanged plates together, substantially as described.
5. In a car-body construction, the combination of an inner end Wall metal plate, an outer end Wall metal plate, a bentsheetmetal flanged post member fastened to said inner Wall plate, the fiange of such 1nember aifording means for the fastening thereto of the inner sheathing of the car body side Wall, a bent corner finish plate shaped t0 provide a door jamb and fastened to said outer end Wall plate, said post member and finish plate being secured together, substantially as described.
6. In a car-body construction, the con1bination of an inner end Wall metal plate, an outer end Wall metal plate, a bent post member fastened to said inner Wall plate, abent finish plate fastened to said outer Wall plate, and means securing said post member andfinish plate together, said ost member .and finish plate overlapping one another and provicling a recess for the accommodation of the marginal portion 0f the outer side Wall sheathing, substantially as described.
