SELF-FEEDING SHAVING-BRUSH.
lpccttloltlon of Letten Patent. Ylntntcd Nov. k7, lill Application tllnd November 4. 1910. Ierlll le. 590.7.
To dl u-'hom it me y concern:
'Be it known that I, Davie ll. Hawes, a ritizen'ot tho United Status. residing nt. Bridgeport, county ot Fairlield, State of (Tonini-tient, have invented un Improvementy in Selfdeeiling Shaving-Brushes, of whirl: the following is u specification.
This invention has for its objeet to provide a self-feeding shaving brush having a reservoir ltor liquid shaving soap. which shall be simple und inexpensive to produce. durable and sanitary und which shall Thr handle may be ma titi be so constructed that. while the brush may be held in any position without. leakage, a quick downward movement thereof will cause a small quantity of the liquid soap to be fed to the interior ot? the brush but the tlow will be instantly shut of, there being no air valve to make trouble and no ma.- nipulution of parte being ret uired.
With these und other ob eets in view I have devised the novel self ceding shaving brush which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part. of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts:
Fifure 1 u longitudinal Section of my novo shaving brush us in use; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of a modified forni of the feed tube detached.
10 ,denotes the brush, 11 the brush holder and 12 the handle which is made hollow to form .a reservoir for liquid shaving soap.
re of any ISuitable material us metal, ivory or (zelluloid. The brushholderix detaohably ammi-od to the handlen the usual or in any preferred num ner, as by male and femalethreads on the respective parts as shown in the drawing.
13denotes the base of the brush which consists of the buttaof the bristles coinmctiahin a mass of cement by which -the rush is secured in the holder.
14 denotes n feed tube which is rigidliy sented in the base of the brush and exten s through the buse und downward into the bristles, mi clearly shown in Fi' 1. The lower end of tho tube is prefere ly curved outward sli ht'ly to form a. seat for a. ball,
valve 15. n practice the bull valve lies partly eoeketed in its sont. and partly in aporliot i6 in the brush, the bristles closing around the valve, tu.' indirntod in the drawing. Ao a means of' insuring tho retention ol' the bali. valve in eugagmnont with its:
rient, I provide uv coil spring l?, one ond of which is connected to the vulve and the other to the u per end of the feed tube.
Tn Fil; 1,l have shown the u )per end of the eed tube as provided wit an 'inwardly extendigg tongue 18 by which the sprin is en ag ori preferred the upper end o the eed tube may be provided with a slot. 19, as in Fig. 2, und a coil of the spring ma be engaged in the slot.. In pructiee it is preferable that the brush when out of use'be placed with the bristles upward, es ially immediately 'after use so as to permit the bristles to dry. It is neeesf sary, however, that the ball valve should engage its seat with sutlieient pressure to roventi leakage of the liquid son into the ristles when the brush is lac horizontally or even with the bris les downward'. Adjustment of the spring to effect this result is very simple as it is 'nly neceaiary to detach the brush holder from the handle, increase the tension of the spring by extending it und then rengagethe spring with the feed tube. make trouble, the* operation of lling the reservoir is a simple one, it merely being required to detach the brush holder and invert the reservoir. For use in shaving, it is simply necessary to hold tbe bristles downward and give the' brush a quick :notion or jerk downward. This motion or jerk of the brush disengages tho ball vulve :for un instant from its seat and ordinarily causes sulicientliquid soap to feed to the brush fora single use. Should more soap be required, un additional downward motion or jerk of the brush will su iply an ample quantity. The bristles of t e rush may or may not be dip in water before feeding, as may be pre erred by the us-er. After use, the brush should be washed and driedin thel usual manner. The brush needs no care other than un shaving brush should always receive. I nd in practice that'it will o )crate perfectly until tlie-liquid soap in t. e reservoir is exhausted und then merely requires rc-filling.
I Iaving thus described my invention I chum: l. 'lhe combination with u reservoir, of a feed tube leading tlwrefrom, a ball valve eooperating with the outer end of said tube, and o flexible holir-al spring having one end seein-od to said valve, said spring extendin through said tube, the lutterv being providei with securing means for the spring capable As there is no air valve to s bull valve coperatln with the mitm' c of en, ging my convolution of said spring,` end connected to said bsll vsive snd the 10 whore y und ball valve is mljustobly susother end connected with said tongue.
