Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. EDGERTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elect-ric- Lamp Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in electric lamp cleaners, the present application being an improvement upon the construction shown and claimed in my Letters Patent Nos. 925,084 and 949,419 granted June 15, 1909 and February 15, 1910, respectively.
The object of this invention is the production of a cleaner of the character mentioned which will be of improved construction and of great efficiency in operation.

The preferred form of my construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a handle 1, in the upper bifurcated end of which are pivotally mounted as at 2, angular levers 3, said levers being so mounted that, when the ends 4 thereof are drawn downwardly, the upper ends of said levers will be forced or rocked toward each other. Carried by the upper ends of the levers 3 are grasping jaws 5, the same being pivotally secured as at 6 to the upper extremities of said ends, integral ears 6 being formed upon the outer sides of said jaws in order to efi'ect such connection. Said jaw members 5 are formed of sheet metal, the same being of a concave comformation or of an interior form such that when in closed position the same will conform substantially with the contour of an electric lamp globe, which is illustrated at 7 By reason of the pivotal connection of said jaw members with the levers 3 it will be observed that said jaw members will be free to adjust themselves against the opposite sides of the lamp globe embraced thereby, thus adapting the device for engagement of lamp globes of various forms or sizes. The peripheral edges of the jaws 5 are covered with frictional coverings 8, such covering being effected preferably by wrapping rubber bands about said edge portions, this being permitted by the provision of elongated slots 9 arranged adjacent and parallel with said edges. With this provision it will be seen that slippage of the cleaning cloth 10 in said jaws, when effecting the cleaning of a lamp globe as shown f in Fig. 3 or of the lamp globe itself in said jaws when unscrewing or removing the same, will be prevented. Projections 12 provided upon said levers serve to limit inward rocking of the lower ends of said jaw members.
The compression spring 13 engaging against the undersides of the arms 4 of the levers 3 serves, as described in my above mentioned Letters Patent, to normally hold the upper ends of the levers 3 and hence the jaw members 5 in inoperative or open position. Arranged below the levers 3 upon the handle 1 is the casing 14 in which is rotatably mounted the drum 15, manual rotation of said drum being effected through the medium of a cord or connecting element 16 which is connected at its upper eX tremity with the outer extremity of the rocker arm 16 formed integral with and projecting from said drum. The operating cord 16 passes through guide eyes 17 spaced at intervals upon the handle 1. Operative connection between the drum 15 and the lever ends 4 is effected through the medium of a chain 18, links 19, and a connecting element 20, so that rotation of said drum, such as is caused by downward rook ing of the arm 16, will effect the swinging of the levers 3 and hence the jaw members 5 to operative position, the arrangement being such, as will be observed, that when said levers and jaws are in open position said arm 16 will be resting against the edge or flange 21 of the casing 14, said arm 16 thus serving to limit the opening swing or movement of said levers and jaws. Connection between the drum 15 and the chain 18 is established by means of a hook member 22 which is adapted to engage any one of a plurality of perforations 23 spaced in the periphery of said drum. With this construction, it will be seen that provision is made whereby the limit of opening movement of the levers 3 may be adjusted, it being clear that when said hook member is in engagement with the endmost perforation 23 at the outer side of said drum, as shown in Fig. 3, said levers will not be permitted to open outwardly to such a great extent as when said hook member is in engagementwith any of the other of said perforations, the greatest extent of opening movement of said levers being permitted when said hook member is in engagement with the innermost of said perforations 23. This provision is of advantage when it is known he forehand the size of the globe to be engaged by the device, since, when this is known, adjustment may be made in accordance with the globe to be engaged and so that said levers 8 may be rocked but a short distance from open position to a position in which the jaws 5 will embrace the'globe.
Provided upon the periphery of the drum 15 is a plurality of ratchet teeth 24 with which cooperates a pawl 25 which serves to hold said drum 15 and hence the jaws connected thereto in positions of adjustment. A leaf spring 26 resting in engagement with the operative end of said pawl serves to normally force the latter into engagement with the teeth 24. Swinging of said pawl to inoperative position is limited by a stop 27. Pivotally mounted below the pawl 25 is a lever 28 which is so arranged that when the end 28 thereof is rocked downwardly the opposite end thereof will engage the pawl 25 to effect the tripping thereof or swinging to a position in which the teeth 24 and hence the drum 15 will be released. To the end 28' of the lever 28 is connected a cord 29 which passes downwardly along the handle 1 with the cord 16 through the guide eyes 17. With this provision it will be seen that operation of said lever may be manually effected by downward drawing of said cord 29.
The handle 1 is shown as being provided with a universal joint 30 adjacent its upper extremity so as to adapt the device for employment where the lamp globes to be engaged are arranged at angles. A sleeve 31 slidably mounted upon the handle 1 is adapted to be slid over the oint 30 in order to maintain the handle rigid for ordinary use. This construction, as well as the general construction above described, is however, shown and claimed in my Letters Patout above referred to, the points of novelty in the construction claimed in the present application residing in the pivoted mounting of the jaws 5 as well as the construction thereof and the construction whereby the extent of opening movement of said jaws and'the levers 3 may be adjusted.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved lamp cleaner I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and the arrangements of parts described without departing from the spirit of the invention as comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle, angular levers pivotally mounted at the upper end of said handle; opposing jaws pivotally secured to the upper ends of said levers; and means for operating said levers to close said jaws, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle; angular levers pivotally mounted at the upper end of said handle; opposing jaws pivotally secured to the upper ends of said levers; resilient means cooperating with said levers for normally holding said jaws in open position; and means for operating said levers to effect the closing of said aws, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle; angular levers pivotally mounted at the upper end of said handle; opposing jaws pivotally secured to the upper ends of said levers; a frictional covering for said jaws at the contacting or operative edges thereof; resilient means cooperating with said levers for normally holding said jaws open; and means for operating said levers to effect the closing of said jaws, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle; angular levers pivotally mounted at the upper end of said handle; opposing jaws pivotally secured to the upper ends of said levers; the interior form of said aws being, when in closed position, substantially the same as the contour of an electric lamp globe; a frictional covering for the peripheral edges of said aws; and means for actuating said jaws, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle; angular levers pivotally mounted at the upper end of said handle; opposing jaws pivotally secured to the upper ends of said levers; resilient means cooperating with said levers for normally holding said jaws in opening position; and adjustable means cooperating with said levers for effecting closing operation of said jaws and for limiting the extent of opening movement of said levers, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle; angular levers pivot-ally mounted at the upper end of said handle; opposing jaws pivotally secured to the upper ends of said levers; resilient means coiiperating with said levers for normally holding said jaws in opening position; manually operable means for efiecting closing movement of said jaws; an adjustable connection between said operating means and said jaws whereby the extent of opening movement of said levers may be adjusted; and manually releasable means for holding said jaws in closing or engaging positions, substantially as described.
