THOMAS Moonn or nnooktrimnnw Yoan.
lLetters' Patent No, 100,785, elated March 15, 1870.
.GOVERNOR FOR STEAM-EN GINES.
The Schedule referred to Vin'these' Letters Patent and making part of the seme.
To all whom it 'may concern Beit known 4that I, THoMAsMoonE,
in the county 'of Kings, and State o f New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Centrifugal Governors; land I do hereby declare that the follow ing is a full, vclear and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to .make and use the saine,' reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification;
This invention relates t`o a new and' useful improvement for governors for regulating the speed of steamengines, and for all purposes to which it is applicable,V
whereby the governor is rendered more sensitive than governors of ordinary construction; and
The invention consists inthe manner of confining and operating the balls, and in the 'general construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter `more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical section ofthe improved governor through the line x :c of fig. 2. Figure 2 is a plan view, looking from the line y y of fig.y l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A isa fly-wheel.. B is the cone-pulley, by means of which the governor is operated.` v
O is a yoke, slotted so asto admit bell-cranks D and E, which are pivoted thereto at the points F F G G represent'arms of the ity-wheel, connecting the center H with the rim of the wheel.
The ily-wheel, the conepulley, the yoke, and the center, with the arms G G, are all cast in a single piece.`
II represent the balls, which are confined on rods 'J J, which rods are fastened to the rim and to the center H. The balls slide on these rods as they are expanded by centrifugal force. The balls are made-in two parts, screwed together, as seen in fig. 1;
K K represent springs, which pass through the centcr of theballs, as seen in the drawing.
of the bell-cranks D. The slots in the ears m allowV i the outward movement of the balls and the throw .or
necessary sweep'of the arms of the cranks.
l The pins, by Fwhichl the arms are connected with the of Brooklyn,
ears, may be provided with fiiction rolls to render the movement more free than it would be with simple pins.
N represents the valverod, upon the-lower end of which is the valve in the steam-pipe O.
' P is a clasp on the top of the valve-rod, which is connected with the other arm of the bell-cranks D by the' rods R R.
A screw-thread is cut on the upper portionof the valve-rods N. A
S S represent screw-nuts on the valve-rod above and below the clasp P, by which the position of the valve is regulated.
The valve-rod plays freely through the center H of the governor, and the valve T, when properly adjusted to a given speed by means of the nuts S S, is varied in position by the movement of the balls according as thel speed is increased or di|ninished. Y
The springs K K operate upon the balls nnceas ingly and render'them extremely sensitive to any vVariation in the speed of the engine. v v
Although this governor operates upon the valve by lmeans of centrifugal force, it may be placed in any position with the lwheel A, either vertical, horizontal, or inclined. Its action is perfect in all positions.
The main parts of the governor being cast in a single piece, the cost of fitting up is comparatively small. They can consequently be furnished to the public at a reduced rate.v
I anraware that divided balls confining springs bef;
tween the two parts, the object of said springs being `to return the balls to their 'normal position in opposition tothe centrifugal force that maybe brought to bear on the balls, have been Ibefore used.4 I do not, therefore, broadly claim such balls, as my invention relates to the mode of joiningthe parts of such balls,
and the mode of conlining and operating such springs.
Having thus described my invention,
' Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The independent springs KK and balls I I, the latter sliding upon the rods J J of the y-wheel, in combination with slotted ears m m, bell-crank levers I) I), and straps It R, all arranged and operated as set forth. y
2. The sphericall ball formed in two parts, one with a threaded shank, and the other with a correspondingly threaded recess, in combination with a spring, K, clamped between. the said parts in the nfauner described.
THOS. MOORE.
