Be it known that '1, ll). T HEODRE LANG, of the city and county of Washington, and-District of'Colm'nbia, have invented a' new and improved Automatic Cut-Oil for Steam, Ecc., and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,and'exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specication, in whichlike parts are indicated by lilreletters in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a governor and valve, and combining them so as to ali'ord immediate.,self-adjustment wherebyto produce upon the steam pistona variable edcctivc pressure, thereby regulating the 'power and speed.

that it is desirable to have a governor sensitive to the small and momentary variations of speed of the main driving-shaft. To effect this, propose a contrivance which forcesthe weights of the governor up or down an inclined guide. .This insures the desired movement of thc governor, which exclusively controls a valve to be Vhereafter described. i

To the ends of these levers are' attached the weights E E, either rigidly or by means of springs ff. Fis a colf lar fastened to the shaft C, having on its upper surface friction-rollers, g, on which the loose collar Drests and plays. Above D is another collar, Gr,l secured to sha-ft C. Between these collars F and G the loose collar-D rotates without rising or falling, H H are inclined, curved, slotted guides, which are fastened to a collar, in' secured to shaft C, or they may be fastened directly to shaft C. The 'guides shown are curved and'slotted, and' `in these slots the arms d work or play, these arms having on their lower ends friction-rollers d1, held in place by a'reeess in the arm above, and a eolien-cl2, below, thus count-erecting 4 friction onv the'guidesorlessening it. This is' eccted'by the guides, which, moving faster or slower than thede'siredspeed, will, With the aid ofthe inertia of the balls, force them either up lor down, in either case operating the 'valve instantly, in 'the first case partially closing the ports g, and thesecond exposing more area of the same. The springsf are intended to overcome sudden jars or jerks. The rods. z', transmitting Athe governing power, need not be above the loose collar D, andneed not Abe fastened to the end of the elbow cl3, but may be arranged the same as on common governors, this without altering the nature of myrinvention.. The location of the upper sliding collar l: may be varied to suit the convenience ofthe special machinery to which it is to be adapted; for instance, it may be below the collar D. The collar F, with the frietion-rollers g, may have any other equivalent antifriction devices; also as to the curved slotted guides, which may be solid and inclined. It' solid, friction-rollers above andhelow will keep the arms cl in desirable positions. I have essayed these parts in various forms, and of various detailed devices, but have adopted these, believing them to be the best.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. Tho combination and arrangement of the curved slotted guides H H, collar L, arms d, friction-rollers d1, springs ff, Weights E E, collar F, friction-rollers g g, loose collar D, rods z', collar lc, constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner substantially as Shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination ofthe valve4 M and cover L with the governor, substantially as herein set forth.
