Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 8, 1910. Serial No. 596,226.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIASAR KOHAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of Port Ewen, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing:
Machines; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, whereon the same reference characters indicate the same parts throughout, to be'a full, clear,
and exact disclosure of the same.
.by the physical action of running water and air, the water carrying a proper amount of dissolved soap, and it cleanses gently but thoroughly, without entailing the wear and tear that is usually met with when clothing or the like is washed by hand or laundried by machines. It thus effects a great saving in the labor, and expense of operation.
, A further object of my invention is to provide a construction whereby the above advantages can be obtained without the .need of special power appliances for operating the same. It can be put into actual use at any time, merely by connecting it to a hydrant or water pipe, and can therefore be employed whenever there is occasion for its use, in any city or place having a modern water supply system.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the detailed description which follows.
On the drawings Figure 1 is an outside view of my washing apparatus; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 5; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the closure disk for the top of my apparatus; Fig. l is a horizontal section of the cleansing chamber taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 5; and Fig.

My invention comprises a bottle-shaped vessel A, which is connected at the lower portion, inte ally or otherwise, to a cylindrical extension B, having. a flat bottom G The vessel A is made of sheet iron and has a perfectly smooth surface over the neck portion, but the body portion is ruflled or corrugated, as is clearly shown at c on Figs. 4 and 5. This corrugated body portion serves as the receiving or washing chamber for the materials to be washed, and has an opening in the side, closed bythe door D. The body portion has a suitable-number of holes E of equal size in its lower part, and is supported by the extension B so that its bottom is held spaced from the fiat bottom C, so as to form' with the extension B a space G. A suitable number of holes are also made in the sides of the extension B, and a cock H is provided on a level with the bottom C to drain the device. Above the body portion the neck A tapers for a portion of its length, and then terminates in a flaring extension I. At the junction of the tapering part of the neck with the flaring extension is a conical partition P. This partition slopes downward and outward, and has perforations P, and a flat central part 0 which supports a cylinder Q. This cylinder is concentric with the extension I and extends up to the top of the vessel, where it terminates in an open end. The
,top of the vessel A has a central opening S therein through which the cylinder Q is inserted. The cylinder Q has lateral openings Q near the bottom, and its lower endis piercedto receive a pipe T. This pipe has a contracted lower end with an outlet T, and contains a spiral guideway V, fitting tightly in the pipe and supported by a fixed axial stem U. The top of the pipe T has openings K and receives a tube W of rubber or metal to connect it with a water pipe or hydrant. The cylinder Q is also adapted to contain a gauze body X, which is made in sections, as shown in Fig. 2, and fits snugly around the pipe. This body X forms a holder and when the washer is in use, is filled with finely divided soap or other cleansing agent m. The top R of the vessel contains a number of openings G, which register. with corresponding openings G in a revolving closure disk Y. This disk has a central opening S, coinciding with the central opening; S in the top R, and it will be understood that the disk can be revolved so asto open or close the openings in the top of the vessel A to any desired degree, and that it is permanently secured to the vessel in any convenient way.[
In operation the gauze body X 'is filled with sliced soap, and the clothes or cloths to be washed are put into the vessel through the door D. The tube W is then connected to a hydrant, and as the water flows in some of it passes out through the openings K,
through the soap holder, and out through the openings Q upon the partition P, which it covers with a soap bearing film of liquid; The remainder of the water is given a whirling motion by the guide V in the pipe T, and passes out through the opening in the end of the pipe in the form of a flaring jet. This jetdraws in air through the perforations P, and as the air passes through the mixture of soap and water on the partition, it forms bubbles which expand downward until they come into contact with the cloth, where they are broken up. In this Way the materials to be washed are covered with a layer of dissolved soap, which the further action of the water forces through the texture of the material. As the bubbles are continuously formed and forced downwardly every shred and particle is subjected to the action of the soapy mixture, and the; dirt is gradually moistened and loosened to be carried by the water out through the; Some bubbles also form in the space G, but these: are washed away by the water, which finally, passes out through the cock shown at H,f which must be kept open during the washing. Any bubbles remaining in the space; G pass out through the openings F in the holes E in the corrugated bottom.

I desire to emphasize the fact that the? spiral guide V produces a whirling IIIOtIOH of the water which serves to attract'the air forated partition P. A stream of air, atomized water and dissolved soap is thus introduced upon the cloth or other articles to be washed. The surface of the washing chamber being made of corrugated or ruflledi sheet iron, the air is allowed to flow throu h the washing machine readily, because t e;
'ruflies keep open a number of paths beneath the cloth or the like through which the air can flow to the openings E and F and out,
in some of the subjoined claims.
From the foregoing description it will appear that my invention is simple andv easy to use, and I desire to patent the sameas broadly as possible.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, water supplying means for the said chamber, and a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the water supplying means and having independent communication with the chaminto the was ing chamber through the perber, whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to the chamber.
2. In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, water supplying means for the said chamber, a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the water supplying means and having independent communication with the chamber whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to the chamber; and a perforated partition between the holder and the washing cham ber through which the diverted water passes.
3. In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, water supplying. means for the said chamber, said means having an outlet and a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the water supplying means, provided with an outlet and having independent communication with the chamber adjacent the said water supply outlet, whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to the chamber.
4. In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, Water supplying means for the said chamber, said means having an outlet, a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the watersupplying means, provided with an outlet and having independent communication with the chamber adjacent the said water supply outlet, whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to the chamber, and a rforated partition between the holder and the washing chamber, through which the diverted water passes.
5. In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, water supplying means for the said chamber, a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the water supplying means and having independent communication with the chamber whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to the chamber, a perforated partition between the holder and the washing chamber through which the diverted water passes, and means afi'ording access of air to the perforated partition.
6. In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, water supplying means for the said chamber, said means having an outlet, a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the water supplying means, provided with an outlet and having independent communication with the chamber adjacent the said water supply outlet, whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to the chamber, a perforated partition between the holder and-the washing chamber, through which the diverted water passes,
and means affording access of air to the perforated partition.
7 In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, water supplying means for the said chamber, a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the water supplying means and having independent communication with the chamber whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to' the chamber, a perforated partition between the holder and the washing chamber through which the diverted water passes, means affording access of air to the perforated partition, and means for causing the water to spread into a flaring jet as it is discharged into the chamber.
8. In a washing device, the combination of a washing chamber, water supplying means for the said chamber, said means having an outlet, a holder containing a cleansing agent communicating with the water supplying means, provided with an outlet and having independent communication with the chamber adjacent the said water supply outlet whereby a portion of the water supply is diverted through the holder in its passage to the chamber, a perforated partition between the holder and the washin'g'chamber, through which the diverted water passes, means afiording access of air to the perforated partition, and means for causing the water to spread out into a flaring jet as it is discharged into the chamber.
9. In a washing device, the combination of a corrugated washing chamber, having outlet means and a door therein, a cylindrical extension having communication with the chamber adjacent the outlet means, said extension having a closed end and outlet means in the wall thereof, and means for supplying Water and a cleansing agent to the chamber, said means comprising a water 10. In a washing device, the combination of a corrugated or rufiied washing chamber having outlet openings through the corrugations, a partition exposed to the outside air and having perforations leading to the washing chamber, a water pipe having a restricted nozzle and a spiral guideway therein passing through the partition, and means for feeding a cleansing agent in solution upon the partition, whereby when the water supply is turned on the water is discharged into the chamber in a spiral or flaring atomized jet which draws air into the washing chamber through the partition, the air carrying the cleansing solution through the partition with it in the form of bubbles, and flowing unimpededly between the corrugations to the outlet openings.
