, FOUNTAL'N imaginas-BRUSH.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, BERL H. VIKE, c'itizen of the United States, residing at Barry, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain "new and useful Improvements in Fountain Blacking-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.V
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in fountain o1 reservoir brushes-and relates particularly to brushes of that type that embody a eollapsible tube as the main reservoir for the paste or the like, the presentl invention beg ing designed particularly for use as a shoe blacking brush, although not restricted to thatuse.
The invention has for its primary Vobject to provide al simple, durable4 and eiiicient construction of fountain blacking brush, the parts of which may be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled and which em.- bodies detachable daubing and polishing brushes, whereby the same may be easily cleaned and replaced, as well as improved means for holding a collapsible tube of shoe blacking paste or liquid, preferably the latter, whereby the blacking will. be effectually protected when not in use and maintained in proper condition, whereby only the desired amount of blaclting will be fed to the 'dauber, as required, and whereby the. blacking applying and polishing operations may be easily and expeditiously performed without any liability of the operator soiling the hands. .And the invention also has for its object to provide an improved construction of blacking brush, by the use of which accidental waste will be prevented, as the. blacking will not be liable to spill at any time, often happens when bottles of liquid blaeking are used, and to so construct and arrange the parts that the collapsible tubes may be easily applied and replaced when their contents become exhausted.
'With these and-other objects in View as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combina-- tions of the parts that l shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in whichN Figure l is a longitudinal sectional View Specification of etters Patent.

of a brushfconstructed in accordance with my invention, parts being shown in elevation; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the casing designed to protect the collapsible tube; Fig. 3 an end View of the container head of the device; and, Fig. 4 is a detail view of a key designed to compress the collapsible tube.
' Correspondingand like parts are referred to in the following description grid indicated in all the views of the dra rings by the same reference characters. A
Referring' to the drawing, the numeral l designates the container` head of my improved blacking brush, the same being of any desired shape, being octagonal, in the present instance, and being formed near its front edge with a plurality of sockets 2 designed for engagement by a nib which is formed on a spring latch 3 secured to the forward end of a tubular casing i. 'lhis casing is preferably of the same shape as the container head1 and is adapted to be slipped thereover with an endwise movement as is manifest, the latch 3 snapping into one of the sockets 2 so as to prevent the accidental detachment of the contain-er head from the casing.
The container head l is provided in its rear face with an interi orly threaded socket 15 communicating with the rear end of a feed tube 6, the forward end of which leads to a dauber brush Tpreferably detachably Con-I nected to the container head as shown. The socket 5 is designed to receive and be engaged by a threaded nipple 8 which is formed on one end of a collapsible tube t) designed to contain liquid blacking. After the tube 9 ha. been connected to the container head, the casing l is slipped into place on the container head and fastened. The casing 4 is vformed with one or more longitudiimlly extending slots 10, there being two of these slots in the present instance located in diametrical relation to each other.I and said slots are designed for the purpose of permitting the insertion of a key 11, one end of which is bifurcated irulicated at 1Q, whereby it may be slipped over the rear end of the tube 9 and within the casing and cause the contents of the tube to exude therefrom. when the key is twisted or turned. In addition to the slots 10, the casing -lr is preferably formed with a pluralityv of openings 13 which .may be more or less ornamental in character, as desired, and which may also be used to view the tube 9 within the casing to determine the exact condition thereof. In addition to the dauber 7, the container head l carries a pol` ishingbrush la which is preferably detachable and which in the present embodiment of the invention faces in a direction opposite to that in which the dauber 7 faces, being securedgto the forward converging ends of the brace rods 15, the rear ends of said rods being connected to the head 1.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved blacking brush will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, a tube 9 is secured to the container head 1 and the protective casing 4 is then slipped into place, being secured to the container khead by engagement of the latch 3 in one of the sockets 2. The device is then ready for use and it is obvious that by turning the keyl 11, the blacking may be caused to How out of the nipple 8 through the tube 6 so as to moisten the brush 7 by which it may be readily applied to the boot or shoe, after which the polishing brush 14 is used in the usual manner. By using a collapsible tube and a key therefor, it is clear that only the required amount of blacking will be fed to the dauber, that the device may be manipulated without any danger of the hands of the operator becoming soiled, that all accidental waste will be prevented, and that the blacking will be preserved for a comparatively long time and maintained in proper condition, as it is not exposed to the light or liable to become wasted through evaporation. There is no liability of misplacing or losing the brushes, as the device carries its own brush which is detachable and capable of being cleaned or replaced by new ones.
It is, of course, to be understood that in the preferred method of disposing of my improved blacking brushes, a set of collapsible tubes will be sold with one brush,
all of the parts being packed in a box in an evident manner, whereby the user may have at hand a relatively large supply of blacking and not be compelled to at once purchase a new tube after one tube has been used up.
In the preferred method of attaching the polishing brush 14 to the brace rods 15, the latter are connected together by a plate 16 carrying one or two set screws4 17. The back of the polishing brush is provided with a threaded boss 18 designed for engagement in a threaded socket 19 formed in the plate 16, and after the boss has been screwed into the socket, the set screws 17 are worked outwardly so as to impinge against preferably metallic abutments 2O carried by the back of the brush, as clearly illust-rated in Fig. 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A brush of the character described, comprising a container head, braces secured to and projecting forwardly from said head, a
plate secured to the converging forward ends of said braces, the plate being formed with a threaded socket, a brush back formed with a threaded boss working in said socket, the back being also provided with abutments, set screws Working through the plate and adapted to impinge against said abutments, a dauber secured to one of said braces, a feed tube leading from the dauber into the container head, said head being provided in its rear face with a socket into which the rear end of the feed tube opens, a collapsible tube provided with a nipple adapted to be secured in said socket, and a casing designed to be slipped over said tube and arranged for detachable connection to the container head.
In testilnony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
