Description

i have invented Vpi pe E.

THOMAS n Rosana or DEXTER,MAINE.
To all vhom it 'ma-y concern.-
. Be it known' that I, THOMAS E.. Roonns, of Dex`- ter, 'in the countyiof Penobscot, and State of Maine, a `new and valuable Improvement in Vat-s; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,` clear, and exact description of' the cn- :struction and operation of same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this speci-.
tication, and to t-hc letters and figures of' reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, of' the drawings is an external view of my `invent-ion.
Figure 2 is aA centralvertical section thereof'.
My invention relates to means for conveying steam from the vats of dye-honsesand other factories where steam is generated in large quantities, and consists,
maiali/,iu 'the construction oi' a counterbalanced conical top to the dye-vat, Vprovided with an escape-pipe, and arranged to prevent the escape ot" steam't'rom the vat into the dye-room when the liquor is boiling.,
'lhe letter A of thedrawings designates the vat.
-B, the conical cover thereof, arranged like an inverted funnel, and provided withan escape-pipe, C.
`The cylindrical v`ottoni b ot' the cover B is arranged to fit inside the vat, so ythat when the solution therein is boiling, the l'iquorcondensed on the interior Vwall of,
the fnnel will be conveyed back into the vat. The
escape-pipe O, from the `top ofthe coverB, is adapted to slide up and down withinV the long shafiror pipe E, whereby the steam is' conveyed I out ot'- the factory through the root. y'
Counterbalancingweights G G are attached to the coverB by means of the rods 1 Iryand ippee or chains passing over the pulleys p p, fixed to the sides ot' the By this means the vat-cover, although of' great weight, may be handled with facilit when it is necessary to raise the saine to turn the wool or cotton in the liquor. l
In order to catch theliquor which condenses onthe wallet' the pipe E, and triekles down the outside of y the pipe C, a cup or conical ianch, a, is forrcdraround f the cover B, near its top. Thecndcnscd iuid is conveyed back within the vat by the bent tube e, arranged to have its interior end higher than the open-ing through the wall of the cover, and lower than the upper edge ofthe cup a.`
lhe damper s' is arranged at the top of the conical cover B, in the escape-pipe C.
lhe operation ot`-my apparatus may be thus described:
After the vatis filled, and heat applied, the cover B is pulled down to close the'vat, and the damper z turned to prevent the hea-t from passing oii'.' When the liquor is brought to a boil, the damper is opened to let the steam pass oii. The cover can nowberaised to admit the wool or other material to be colored.l Then the cover is brought down, and the vat closed until the wool needs to be turned or broken. While this operation is being peribrmed some steam will escape, but not much, as the cover and pipes are at 2. rlhe conical vat-cover herein described, lcounterbalanced by the weight or weights G, arranged with its lower edge todescend inside the vat, and provided with an external receiving-Hauchbent tube, and cscape-pipe C, with damper arranged to slide within af hxed pipe, E, asspeciiied. Inf testimony that I claim the above, I have hercunto subscribed in v name in thepresence of two wit,
nesses. l i
