RUSSELL PHILLIPS,` OF BOSTON:MASSACHUSETTS.
` Letters Patent N .-100,662, dated March, 1870.`
IMPRovnD cLoTBEs-DRIER. v
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingvpart of the same Beit known that I, RUSSELL PHILLIPS, of Boston, in the county of Sniolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved A Glothes-Drier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
-exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, in \vhicll- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, and
- Figures 2l and 3 views of parts detached,
The object of this invention is'toprovide a clothes drier for out-door use, which can 1he readily removed and folded compactly without removing the lines; and
1t consists mainly of a huh, pivoted to the top of a vertical standard, which hub contains four sockets, in whchare inserted radial arms, three of said sockets being so pivoted as to enable their arlns to Swing into positions parallel to the 'remaining arm, which is stationary. The details of construction and method ot' operation will be more fully described hereafter.'
In the drawingst 4A'represents the Standard, -to the upper end of' which is pivoted the metallic hub B, which can be readily removed therefrom.
The hub B is provided with the anges B, B2, and cylindrical box (L v D represents a Socket, rigidly attached tof the huh B, andE Eare pivoted sockets on each side of socket D.
F represents a socket, provided with lugs ff, which are pivoted by the rod G to theV hub B.
i The sockets D, E, and F are provided with arms, H, which, when in -working position, project radially from huh B and incline upward.
I I represent lines, which pass through the arms E, l
and are secured to all of' said arms but the one attached to the socket F, through which latter they pass freely, the outer line being secured by a thumbscrew, t.
'The operation of my iuventionis as follows:
When the apparatus is in position for use, as shown in tig. 1, the arms are kept from turning by the thumbscrcw't, which bears against the outer line I. When, however, it is desired to `remove the device, the screw is loosened, andthe arms swung around into the posit-ion shown in fig. 3, the lines passing freely through the arm of the Socket F. By the pecuiiu' shape of the socket F and the arrangement of the sockets E E, and D, all the arms can be brought together in a small space, and the drier removed from the standard without taking o the lines. The standard A may be attached to the roof' of a building, or inserted in the ground, and, it' necessary, the holt on which the hubY B revolves may be provided with a Suitable nut.
`Having thus fully described my invention,
What- I claim-as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe hub B, with its Stationary socket D, and pivoted'sockets E E, and F,`lngs ff, arms H, cords I,
and set-screw i, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof', I have signed my name to this specification in the presence'oi' two subscribing witnesses.
. RUSSELL PHILLIPS.
