DOCTOR FRANKLIN ANDERSON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
i CONTAINER OR VRECIEP'IACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 12, 1910.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Serial No. 586,789.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, Doc'ron FRANKLIN ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers or Receptacles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in containers and has for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device especially adapted for use in displaying samples of merchandise which will be so constructed as to provide a number of compartments in compact form so arranged that the contents of any one compartment may be examined at any time without disturbing the contents of 'any other compartment.
This stated object, and such other incidental objects as will hereinafter appear, are attained in the use of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the invention consists in certain novel features of the same, which will be hereinafter first fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of my improved container showing it in the closed position; F ig. 2 is a similar View showing the open position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section of the end of the pivot member; and, Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section.
In carrying out my present invention, I employ a pivot member l which is preferably a cylindrical casing provided with annular flanges 2 at its ends and in the opposed inner radial faces of said flanges, I provide annular grooves 3 in which are fitted the ends of a slidable cover 4 which is adapted to extend over a longitudinal opening in the casing so as to permit access to the interior of the same as will be readily understood. In the ends of the pivot member are provided a series of annular grooves 5 which may be formed in any convenient manner and in which are seated rings 6 adapted to slide around the member Within the grooves y to permit the shifting of boxes or compartments 7 secured to the rings and having their inner edges or backs 8 made concave so as to conform to the curved surface of the cylinder and permit the boxes to be moved around the same so as to fold together or to extend outward at opposite sides of the cylinder as shown. It will be noted that the boxes are not disposed radially to the cylinder but the outermost boxes are arranged tangentially thereto so that when the contents of the several compartments are to be examined, the outermost boxes may be swung around to a horizontal position so as to lie lflat upon a table or other support with the pivot above the said boxes and the intermediate boxes superimposed upon the outer boxes. When the contents of the several compartments or boxes are not to be examined, the said compartments are swung together so that they will all rise vertically from the pivot with their sides in contact in which position they may be locked together by any suitable form of fastening device. Each box or compartment is provided with a lid 9 which is hinged at its inner edge to the back of the compartment so that the cover may be conveniently raised to permit access to the compartment or may lie flat upon the compartment to support the superadjacent compartment. It will be noted that the rings 6 at each end of the pivot correspond in number to the separate boxes or compartments 7 so that each box may be swung around the pivot independently of all the other boxes so that free access may be had to the particular box, the contents of which it is desired to examine. It will also be noted that the cylindrical casing constitutes a receptacle which may be utilized for holding samples or other articles and that my device provides means whereby a large number of articles may be carried within a small space.
My device is intended more particularly for use as a sample case for salesmen, but it is, of course, capable of use wherever it is desired to carry a large number of articles in compact form.
The annular flanges at the ends of the pivot may be utilized to reinforce the same and for that reason are preferably in the form of thimbles fitted over the ends of the cylinder and provided externally with annular grooves to receive the rings which carry the outer boxes. The grooves to receive these rings may be, however, formed in any desired manner and while I have shown them as formed in the surface of thimbles, it would be an equivalent construction to provide a series of annular ribs or flanges on the ends of the cylinder and fit the rings between these ribs. A
If desired one or more ends of the Qylindrical casing may be left open and closed by a cover la Which may be hinged as at lb and held closed by a suitable catch le, (see Fig. 3). This construction enables umbrellas and canes to be placed in the casing When the device is used as a traveling case.
Having thus described my-invention, What I claim is l. A container comprising a cylindrical pivot member provided at its ends with external annular grooves, rings slidably litted in said grooves, and boxes secured directly to and projecting `from said rings, the inner edges of all the boxes being concaved to lit againstl the pivot member.
2. A container comprising a cylindrical pivot member and a series of boxes carrying rings which encircle and slide around the pivot member, the inner edges of the boxes being concaved to lit against the periphery of the pivot member, the outermost boxes being so curved that they Will lie flat in a plane tangential to the pivot member When opened and in parallel lines tangential thereto When closed, and the inner boxes lying Copies of this patent may be obtained for parallel vvithh the outer boxes in both opened and closed positions.
3. A container comprising a. cylindrical casing provided at its ends With annular grooves and With annular langes having grooves in their inner radial faces, a cover slidably fitted in the groove of said flanges, rings fitted in the annular grooves in the casing, and boxes secured to and projecting from said rings.
4. A container comprising a cylindrical pivot member and a double series of boxes secured to and slidable around said pivot member, the inner edges of the boxes being curved to lit upon the periphery of the pivot member, the outermost box of each series having its bottomvin a plane tangential to the pivot member and the inner boxes of each series being parallel With said outer boxes when both opened and closed, the boxes of each series being of a combined height equal to the radius of the pivot member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
DOCTOR FRANKLIN ANDERSON.
