FOLDING SCAFFOLD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST ZAHN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Folding Scaffold, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to folding scafliolds for general use, my more particular purpose being to provide a simple, strong and efficient scaflold suitable upon the exterior faces of building walls and adapted to be let out and drawn in through windows or the like.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved scaffold and parts associated therewith used in connection with a window; and Fig. 2 is a substantially central vertical section through the scaffold, showing it as folded up and out of use.

A wall 3 is provided with a window 4 and with a window frame 5. I provide a window bar 6 entirely separate from the window and its connections. Two metallic tension members 7 in this instance rods, are connected together by a cross portion 7 and secured at their ends to the window bar 6. At 8 are two longitudinal members of metal connected together by a cross portion 9 and integral with two portions 10, these portions 10 being bent back upon themselves and serving as feet for resting against the wall 3. The longitudinal members 8 are provided with eyes 11. At 12 are two portions of a rod 13, these two portions being provided with eyes 14 which encircle the cross portion 7 A bar 15 is mounted upon the upper ends of two rods 16. These rods are bent around so as to form eyes 17 and are provided with inclined portions 18 connected together by a cross portion 19, and are further bent so as to form eyes 20. At 21 is a board or -.-group of boards resting upon the horizontal portions 12 of the rod 13.

The operation of my device is as follows: In order to erect the scaffold as indicated in Fig. 1, the device is let out through the window 4, so that the window bar 6 lodges against the inner face of the wall upon op- Specification of Letters Patent. posite sides of the window. The portion 7 now extends out of the window and the feet 10 engage the outer face of the wall at a point a little distance from the window. The bar 15 is next swung outwardly so that the eyes 17 ride along the straight portions 12 of the rod 13. As soon as the eyes 17 are out substantially to the outer portion of the rod 13, the eyes can go no farther, and consequently the bar 15 is supported in a stable position. The board or boards 21 being now rested upon the portions 12 of the rod 13, they constitute a floor. A person standing upon the scaffold 21 can lean against the bar 15, or, if he prefers not to do this, the bar 15 will, to some extent, serve as a rail and prevent excessive danger of the operator falling.

In order to take the platform within the building, the floor, consisting of the board or boards 21, is first removed and taken inside. The bar 15 is next grasped and pulled over through the window. In doing this, the rods 16 swing -upon the portion 9 as a center and the eyes 17 ride along the portions 12 of the rod 13, so that the parts assume generally the respective positions indicated in Fig. 2.. This being done, the entire scaffold is, of course, practically inside of the window and its complete removal is a matter of no difficulty.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a window bar, connections extending therefrom and adapted to project through a window, a cross member extending from one of said projections to the other, a depending member journaled upon said cross member and provided with portions for resting against the outer surface of a wall, a metallic member journaled upon said cross member and provided with portions extending outwardlytherefrom, frame members journaled to said depending member and provided with eyes encircling portions of said metallic member, and a floor for resting upon said metallic member.

2.
