Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Application filed February 25, i911. Serial No. 610,928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD Yno,v a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and use'- ful Improvements in Stump-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stump extractors.
An object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and vefflcient in use and readily operated. I
With the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which* Figure l is a side elevation of my improved stump extractor, and Fig. Qis an end view thereof.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference the letter A designates generally my improved' machine, comprising a sup porting frame B, mounted upon suitable runners C. My improved frame B comprises upwardly converging end members a, connected at their lower ends to the runners C, and to each other by horizontally disposed braces b, and diagonally extending braces c. The upper extremity of the frame B is reinforced by plates ci, while the opposite ends are connected by upper and lower cross beams e and j, and at their upper extremities by plates g. A drum D is journaled in suitable bearings located upon the cross beams e, and has secured thereto by means of clips L, chains z', to the lower ends of which grappling hooks y' are connected by means of suitable clevises. The opposite ends of the drum D have secured thereto gear wheels 7c, which lie in mesh with pinions Z, mounted upon a shaft E, supported by the lower beams f. The opposite ends of the shaft E are provided with oppositely extending crank arms m, whereby the drum D may be rotated for the purpose of extracting a stump. A strap F surrounds the drum D at its intermediate point and extends upward terminating in threaded ends adapted to extend through openings formed in the top of the plates (l, and be retained therein by'means of suitable locking nuts n, for the purpose of bracing the intermediate port-ions of theA drum D, when the same is being rotated, and under the strain of extracting a stump. The rear portions of the beams f are extended beyond the upwardly converging members a, at one side thereof, and secured to the runners C by means of suitable braces 0, and have j ournaled therein in bearn ings, a drum G, around which is wound a cable p, the opposite ends of which are adapted to pass through blocks g, mounted upon cross beams r, the opposite ends of which are halved as at s, for engagement with the upper edges of the runners C, in which position they are held by means of catchers s, secured to the opposite ends of the runners, as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the machine is moved to the desired locality, the hooks not shown, secured to the opposite ends of the cable p, are securely embedded in the ground to prevent any undesired movement of the machine, after which the grapplers y', are securely driven in the stump to be extracted, and the drum D is rotated through the medium of the gears 7c, pinions Z and crank arms m, carried by the shaft E, which movement causes the grapplers to be drawn in the direction of the machine, obviously dragging with it the stump. As before mentioned the intermediate portion of the drum D, will be braced during the strain incurred in this operation, by means of the strap F.
When it is desired to transport the machine from one point to another, the before mentioned hooks t, are driven into the ground and the crank arms u, secured to the drum g, which supports the cable p, are rotated obviously in drawing the machine over the ground in any desired direction. After the machine reaches the end of the cable, the hooks may be removed from the ground and the cable extended in the direction in which the machine is to be moved and the operation repeated.
From the foregoing disclosure, it will be manifest that a device of the nature described is `provided for which will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination in a stump extractor, of a frame comprising upwardly converging corner members, runners supporting the corner members, beams connecting the upper ends of the said corner members, an apertured reinforcing plate connecting the tops of the corner members, a drum ournaled in the Jframe, a U-shaped strap engaging the medial portion of the drum and secured at its opposite ends to the apertured reinforcing plate, thereby bracing the said drum, means for rotating the drum, and means connected to the drum for engagement with a stump or the like, whereby the said stump will be eXtracted upon the rotation of the drum.
In testimony whereof I afIX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD YEO.
