Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Application filed November 11, 1910. Serial No. 591,876.
ltolders for Cigars, of which the following is a speci lcation.
This iIHYQIliTlOD is an improvement in smoking devices, having for an objectto provide what may, for convenience of rei'era clip-cap saifety cigar once, be termed smoker; and the invention has for an object to provide a-eap adapted to fit and he sell?- retaining on the burning end of a cigar and to retain the ashes and prevent the same from falling while the cigar is being smoked or held in the hand, and the invention consists in certain novel. constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the cap with. its retaining ring contracted. Fig. 3 is a side View, partly broken away, of the cap. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation showing the retaining ring expanded. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the (lian'letrically opposite side from that shown in Fig. 4, the retaining ring being expanded. Fig. (3 is an end view, partly in section, the retaining; ring being expanded.
The safety cap is foraniinous to attord passage of air and is preferably made with a screen body A. of line mesh wire or other suitable material. in the form of a cone and the inner or butt end of the cap is adapted to spring inwardly to grip upon a cigar.
l at the butt end of the cap and this ring is split at B and at B and the cap correspondingly split at A and at A. so the retaining ring at the butt-end of the cap may be expanded to receive the cigar and then may he released to spring inwardly upon and gripthe cigar so the cap will. be self-retain ing on the burning end of a cigar when applied as shown in Fig. 1. When at rest, the adjacent edges of the cap A and ring B at- 1 and 2 to lit a comparatively small cigar-and adjacent to and on opposite sides of the slit A the ring R has fixed to it handles C which project outwardly from the ring side by side and are pressed normally apart byan interposed spring I) wound about the fulcrum E and having its arms bearing against the inner sides of the handles C in such manner as to normally force the said handles (1 apart as shown in Fig. 2, thus (amtracting the ring B. This specific construction, as best shown in Fig. fl. is prel'erable because it may be operated easily and certainly to spread the butt end of the cap when the handles (1 are pressed toward each other as shown in Fig. 6, a nd to contract the butt end of the cap when the handles are released as will be understood from Fig. 2, the parts in this position, shown in Fig. '2 operating to grip with a spring action upon a cigar at the butt end of the cap and. thus secure the cap in place. It will be lniderstood, however, that I do not desire to be limited in the broad features oi? my invention of a self-retaining cap adapted to lit on the ash end of a cigar to the specific construction as shown. and described, although this specific construction is preferred for the reasons before explained.
The overlapped ends of the ring at B permit the zuljustrncnt of the ring to lit cigars of different sizes, the ring being; spread by the operation. of the handles tto permit the application of a cap to a cigar and the extent oi the lap is such as to permit the proper fitting of the band to cigars oi dill'erent sizes within'a consi(ha-able rangc. the band at the same time forming a prae-- iii-ally cmitinuous hand around the cigar.
I claim:
A. cap for use on a cigar while smoking the same. comprising a line mesh gauze body open at the hutt end and slightly slittcd longitudinally from said butt cud at (lia: metrically opposite points to permit said butt ends overlapping at one of said slits. a resilient clamping! device supporting the said bull end ol the gauze and adapted to ex mnd and contract the said butt end. said A and B may slightly overlap as shown in clamping device being, cmnposcd of two parts hinged together at a fulcrum, said overlapping the ends of the clamping device parts being made in such shape as to form at i adjacent to the aforesaid slit in the butt end divided ring on one side of the fulcrum, and of the gauze, substantially as set forth. handles on the opposite side of the fulcrum CHARLES F. HOOFER. for expanding said divided ring, and a Witnesses:
spring operating btween said handles and l JOHN PA'I'IISON,
adapted to close the said divided ring by l BETH PATTISON.
