To Vall w'liom it may communiK i Beit known that I, CALVIN H ART, of Farmington,

in the county` of Fulton, and in the Stateot Illinois,

have inventeda new and useful Iinprovementon my FarmfGate, which waspatented to me on 29th June, 1869, No. 92,046; and. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings making -a part of this specification, in which like letters of' ref- @renee-refer to like parts, and in which- Figure 1 represents afperspectii-'e view.

My invention is intended as animprovement' upon my former patent, and consists in constructing the sideof the roller-case with al plate having the clasp by whiclithe case is secured to the rail of .the gate cast therewith, or made apart thereof, and providing said plate with a slot or recesses, so as to allow of thel iianged rollers being placed properly iu position wit-hin said case, the said' flanged rollers being provided with i shouldered axles to fit suitable bearings therein, the .object being to remedy the defect-ive working of the clasp and lollers in my former patent.

D is a post, at a proper distance from thefence-post E, and forming one jamb of the gate, and between which two the `gate slides.

A A are two other posts, forming the other jamb of the gate, andon the saine line as the posts D E.

C is the gate, which runs between the posts D E The upper rail B of the gate is made longer than the other rails of the saine, and runsside by side with the upper rail K'of the fence, and is connected with' the .bottom of the\gate by a diagonal brace, I.

F is a friction-roller with flanged sides, and shoul dcred on each side, outside of the flanges, as seen in fig.` 6, &c., pivoted in I netal bearings -in the posts D and E. This roller F carries the gate, the upper rail of the latter running in the recess ofthe roller between J Vis a metal case, having two flanged friction-rollers pivoted in recesses at either end, one above the other, and separated by and retaining between them the upper rail of the fence K. i

A clamp, a b, projecting from the back of the case,

gripes the corresponding uppermost rail oi' the gate,

to which Vit is attached or driven on.

The construction ofthe roller-case is as follows:

See fig. 3, where i i represent the back of the case, in which is a pivot or bearing at either end for the respective rollers, the corresponding pivots being situate one in each of the return-ends f of thecase. A slot or depression, e, leads from the center of the back of the case up tothe pivotholes 1c k, the" slot beingcut at the center ot' the case entirely through the metal, or only partially,`as convenience may dictate,

the slot being for the purpose of allowing the ends` of the axleot pulley or rollers to be passed into place, and heilig once in, the rail K of the fence secures them.

L is a post, which may or may not be within the range Tof the sliding of the gate. In caseit is necessary to be so close, a portion ot the upper part., next to the rail K', is cut away, and a block of wood,m, set between it and the upper rail. .This allows the rollers M N to pass freely.

I claim, as an improvementon my farm-gate, and as my invention- 1. The roller-case J, with back plate t', provided with slot d, depressions e e, and' clasps a b, constructed and applied in combination with friction-rollers M N, for the purposesof a farm-gate, substantially as dcscribed.

2. The combination of the llanged rollers M N, having shouldered axles g with the case J, as constructed, and the rails K and B of the'fence and gate, substantially as described. 1
