Be it known that I, THEODORE DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification. I

My invention relates to an improvement in devices for use in connection with garment supporters and particularly garters, for the purposes of detachably engaging the garment in such manner that the device may be quickly applied and detached.

More particularly my invention relates to a clasp hook in which the support for the hook is connected to a shield to which the hook member is pivotally connected and has its points bent backwardly in a novel and peculiar manner calculated not only to facilitate their entering the garment for the purpose of engaging it, but also to practically prevent the hook becoming disengaged from the garment unless moved. by hand to that end.

My invention further consists in the details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates a garter provided with my improved garment clasp hooks at each end. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of my improved clasp hook. Fig. is a side view showing the hook in operable position engaging the garment. Fig. 4? is a view corresponding to Fig. 3, and showing the position of a hook just prior to its engagement with the garment.

1 have illustrated my invention in connection with a garter, which garter forms the subject matter of a separate pending application Serial No. 445.617, and dated the 27th day of July. 1908. This garter comprises an endless elastic band 1, or any other type of band, the cross-section of which is reduced under tension. The clasp hook comprises a shield 2, the rear end'of which is bent over on a curve to form an arcuate retaining loop 3. This loop leaves a narrow space bet-ween it and the upper face of the shield, which space is of suflicient width to permit the insertion of the band 1 therein when the band has been stretched to its smallest cross-sectional dimension. After insertion the band rests in the curved or arcuate loop which prevents undue friction at any point on the band and greatly increases its durability. At a point near the center a portion of the shield is stamped up and bent over to form a holder 4 for the pivoted hook. This hook is formed of bent metal, preferably round in. cross-section, and comprises a central cross piece 5 which passes through the holder 4 and serves as a pivotal support for the double hook, which is formed as follows: At each end of the cross piece 5, a hook member is formed and comprises a portion 6 which is bent away from the shield and then a portion 7 which extends forward, substantially parallel with the shield to a point near the outer end of the shield where it is bent downwardly to form a loop, the portion 8 of the loop being brought up close to the portion 7 and then turned downwardly on a curve toward the shield and pointed to give a sharpened end or point 9. To protect the points 9 of the two hooks from being flattened against the shield and also to strengthen the shield, I crimp the same transversely to form a raised rounded shoulder 10 which engages the underside of the portion 8 and holds the points 9 away from the engagement with the shield. Also it will be noted in Fig. 4; that this shoulder 10 cooperates with the inturned disposition of the points 9 to facili tate their ready engagement into the garment 11, it appearing from this figure that the garment, when interposed between the hooks and the shield, will be pressed outwardly by the shoulder 10 against the points 9.

It will be noted that the neck or opening left between the portions 7 and 8 of each hook, is made sufficiently narrow to require the garment to be drawn by force therethrough and therefore to prevent the hook disengaging itself from the garment in the event of its becoming detached from the garter or other form of garment support. The upturned portions 6 of the hooks serve the novel and important function of facilitating the ready disengagement of the hooks from the garment. for it will be seen by reference to Fig. 3, that if the shield be grasped at the point- 3 and forced downwardly, the hooks will tend to swing outwardly away from the shield, and the garinent 11, after it becomes disengaged from the hooks, will strike the portions 6 and force the hooks farther outwardly, thereby permitting the garment to readily pass out from between the hooks and the shield. It will be obvious that when a pull is exerted, by means of the garter 1, by reason of the angular disposition of the hook portion 6 to the shield, the hooks will be held firmly against the shield while in service.

My invention being particularly adapted for use in connection with garment supporters and particularly garters, the advantages of the construction which increases the facility with which the clasp hook may be connected to and disengaged from the garment, are of prime importance.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A clasp hook comprising a shield adapted to be connected to its supporting means at one end, a transverse shoulder formed near the other end of the shield, and

a hook pivotally mounted on the shield and having its pointed end bent inwardly toward the shield, then outwardly, then in wardly again toward the shield, said shoulder engaging the hook in the angle formed by said bent portions, substantially as described.

2. A clasp hook comprising a shield formed of a metal plate having engaging means for a support at one end and a transverse shoulder crimped therein near the other end, and a hook member pivoted to the shield at an intermediate point and having its pointed ends bent back and under to form a loop having a restricted throat opening, said loop engaging said shoulder, substantially as and for the purposes described.
