Be it known that I, ELDRED M. HIBBLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jonestown, in the county of Coahoma and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others, skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools such as hoes, adz axes and other tools of a like nature and more particularly to the fastening of the tool to a handle and my object is to provide a device in which a tool may be easily and quickly removed from the handle and replaced by another tool with little or no trouble.

A further object is to provide a tool with a sectional stem or shank and means whereby the sections may be securely held together.

A still further object is to provide-a de vice which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be extremely eflicient in use.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device detached from the handle. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof partly in section, and, Fig. 3 is a transverse section as seen on line 33, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a blade which may be designed to be used as a hoe, adz ax or in any other preferred sense and 2 represents the shank thereof which is preferably formed in sections 3 and 4, the section t being provided at one end with a socket 5 adapted to receive the end of a handle (not shown) and the wings 6 thereof are provided with openings to receive screws or bolts, as preferred, or any other preferred means, whereby said section 4 may be securely held to the end of said handle. The shank 2 is provided for a portion of its length with threads 7 and an internally threaded sleeve 8 is adapted to engage said threads and retain the sections of said shank together, but each of said sections is also provided with means to cooperate with one another, whereby said sections may be further retained together. The section l is grooved to receive a portion of the section 3 and provided with a notch 9 to receive the lug 10 formed at the end of said section 3, the extreme end of said section being beveled to cooperate with the inclined face of the section 4 adjacent the notch 9. At the free end of the section 4 is provided a lug 11 adapted to engage a notch 12 formed in the section 3 and as the extreme end of the section a rests against a shoulder 13 of the section 3, it will be seen that the two sections will be securely held together when the sleeve 8 is screwed thereon. It will be seen, therefore, that any number of tools, no matter what their purposes may be, particularly garden tools, the interchanging of which is so frequent, may be provided with shanks of the character just described, whereby when it is desired to interchange possibly a rake for a hoe or vice versa, or any other tool, whatsoever, for the one which is being used, the same may be done quickly and easily with little or no trouble.

Any number of tools may be provided, and preferably sold in sets, with sections of the shanks formed similarly to the one described as 3 hereabove, and provided with merely one section 4:, whereby, it will be seen that only one handle may be necessary and the tools interchanged at will. It will furthcr be seen that in view of the notches and lugs formed in the respective sections and the manner of connecting the same, it is possible for any tool of the character described to be used, without possibility of the same becoming loose from its handle.

lVhat I claim is A device of the character described, comprising a blade, a shank therefor formed in sections, one of said sections being grooved to receive the other and each of said sections provided with a notch and lug, respectively, the notch of one section receiving the lug of the other, and a sleeve surrounding said section.
