SASH CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1'2, 1911-;
Application filed May 10, 1911. Serial No. 626,379. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM M. GOLD SMITH, va citizen of the United States of Another object of my invention is a s ash construction, the steps of manufacture and assembling of which are inexpensive.
These and other objects I attain by the means described. in the specification, and
illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a part of a sash illustrative of the construction embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the intersecting members of which the sash is composed, the parts being shown on somewhat an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the parts shown in Figs. 2. and
- 3, in the position they occupy relatively to each other when assembled in a sash.
The sash construction embodying my 111- vention consists of horizontal and vertical interlocking T-bars, which, at the points oi intersection, have the flange of one-of the intersecting T-bars cut away to pass the flange of'its intersecting bar, and have the web of said intersecting bar slottedto pass the web of the first bar.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown the flanges of the horizontal members as being cut away at intervals, and the webs of the verticalmembers as being slotted, but I may reverse this order and cut the flanges of the vertical memberscand the webs of the horizontal ones. The flanges a of the horizontal members have a part removed, which is of the Width of the flange Z) of the vertical members, the sides a a of the cut in the flange, a, being parallel, so as to fit snugly against the-sides of the flange b. In the web of the horizontal member, midway between the sideso a of the cut, there is formed a notch a The web 6-" of the vertical members have in them a slot 6 of a width equal to the width of the Web a of the-horizontal members. so that the sides of the slots 6 side of the slot 6 is a tooth b, which, in. the assembled position of the T-bars, fits into the notch a The tooth b and the notch a have their upper edges at equal distances from the flanges a and b, so that when the slot 6 is passed over the flange a, the tooth fit the sides of the web a snugly. Upon the b will be sprung into the notch-a byythe 1 elasticity ofthielmetal, at the time when the flanges a and I) become flush with each other in fitting the bars together. Y
The cut away portions of the'flanges of the horizontal members are made at a distance apart, equal to the width of the pane of the sash, and the slots 6? of the webs of the vertical members are at a distance apart, equal to the height of the pane of the sash.
The manufacturer may-ship the T-bars to the building, in which the sashes are to be installed, unassembled. To assemble them, the workman simply has to bring the slotted portion ofthe webs of the vertical members to register with the webs at thecut away portions of the horizontal members, and
then to drive the vertical members to place 1 upon the horizontal members, so that the teeth b fit into the notches a In this position, the flanges of the T-bars are flush with each other, and together with the webs form a framework into which the panes of glass may be seated.
lVhat I claim is 1. A sash construction consisting of T-.
'bars crossing each other, each of said T-bars consisting of a flat flange having parallel faces and parallel edges, and an integral web at right angles to the flange, one of the T-bars at the point of intersection having its flangecut out, the cut-out portion being of the width of the flange of the" second T- bar, the second T-bar having its web cut out, the cut-out portion of the web being of the width of the thickness of the web of the first T-bar, the bars being assembled with the .web of one embracing the web of the other and with their flanges flush with each other, and a means for lockingthe T-bars together formed by a notch in the uncut web and a tooth upon the'slotted edge of the other web and fitting into the notch.
2. A sash construction consisting of T- bars crossing each other, each of said T- bars consisting of a flat flange having parallel facesand parallel edges, and an 1ntegral web at right angles to. the flange, oneof the T-bars at the point of intersection having its flange cut out, thecut-out porwith each other, and a means connecting tion being of the width of the flange of the webs of the T-baers together, said means 10 the second T-bar, the second T-bar having being integral with the Webs. its web cut out, the cut-out portion of the a web being of the width of the thickness of WILLIAM GOLDSMITH- the'web of the first T-bar, the bars being Witnesses:
assembled with the Web of one embracing the WALTER F. MURRAY,
web-0f the other and with their flanges flush MAX S. GOLDSMITH.
