To whom it may concern.- -Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. WAIT, of Rich-.
mend, Wayne county, Indiana, have invented a new anddmproved Invalid and general purpose'Bed-Bottom, oi' which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable bed-bottom. that shall be applicable to any bedstead, and which, while equal to the best for ordinary use will be especially'n'ell adapted to the use of invalids. p
To this end I employ an adjustable frame hinged to the principal frame of the bottom in such a manner that it may be elevated, thereby raising the head and shoulders of the occupmm The firstpart of my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the pawls that support the adjustable frame and the rod to which they are attached, the latter being fixed in the principalfi'ame while the ponds. engage in racks attached to the adjustable part.
The second part of my invention relates to certain cheap and convenient devices, as will be hereinafter described, for preventing lateral motion in the slats while allowing a free vertical motion.
My invention further'relates to the arrangement of the lever and other devices for operating the adjustable frame, and to the general combination of parts, as willbe described.

General Description. V
I provide for" my bed-bottom a rectangular frame composed of the side and end iailsA A and B B, the horizontal rails or bearers O G O", and the cross pieces D.
The transverse slats E E, 860., aresupported on helical springs that rest on the horizontal rails O 0' 0'; only the slats that support the greatest weight of the body are supplied with springs at the center, as shown at R R R3.
These springs R It R are similar to all the others, and by their use the slats are graduated very nearly in proportion to the weight imposed. V
The slats, E E, &c., are allowed vertical play, and are guided at their, ends by pins 9 g placed one on either side of the slat, or otherwise, by a-single pin, I,
placed at each end of the slat and fitting a notch, U,

These pins may be detached from the rails A A, or they may be semicylindrical and glued to those rails, as shown in fig. 5. 1
