SIDE-CURTAIN SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.
Application filed July 13, 1910. Serial No. 571,842.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY T. SoNDnRUr and CHRIST T. SoNDEnUr, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Howard, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Curtain Supporters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to side curtain supporters for buggies and has for an object to provide a device for preventing the curtain from sagging when in use, this device being foldable upon itself so as to permit of the curtain being folded upon itself and then wrapped about the device so as to take up a minimum amount of space when stored.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specificationz-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a curtain equipped with our improved device. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the device. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device folded.
Referring now to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates a side curtain, the same being equipped adjacent its edges with button-holes 11 for securing the curtain to buttons carried by the buggy top. Straps 12 are secured to the rear edge of the curtain for securing the curtain to the rear braces of the buggy top. This curtain is of the ordinary construction and forms no part of the present invention.
The curtain'support comprising the subject matter of this invention consists of a plurality of flat bars 13, each bar being equipped upon its side face adjacent one end with a pair of spaced hinge lugs let, between which a hinge lug 15 carried by the mating end of the adjacent bar is inserted, a pivot pin 16 being passed through the hinge lugs to pivotally secure the parts together. The hinge lugs all project from the same side of the bars and it will be noted that the interfitting hinge lugs between one of the outer bars and intermediate bar is considerably elongated so that the pivot pin carried by these lugs is disposed a greater distance from the adjacent side faces of the bars than the pivot pin carried by the interfitting hinge lugs of the other outer bar and intermediate bar. By this construction the outer bar having its pivot pin disposed adjacent to the side face of the bar, may be folded upon the intermediate bar, and then the outer bar having its pivot disposed remote from the side face of the bar may be folded upon the folded outer bar as shown in Fig. 3 to permit of the device being stored in a minimum amount of space. The bars are each equipped with rivet openings 17 through which and the curtain, rivets 18 are passed to secure the curtain to the rods. The supporter above described is arranged upon the inner face of the curtain with the hinge lugs turned toward the interior of the buggy top so that no obstructing projections are presented to lacerate the curtain'when the supporter is in applied position. A plurality of lugs 19 are riveted or otherwise secured as shown at 20 to the supporter and are provided adjacent their free extremities with suitable openings to receive rivets 21 which pass through the curtain and secure the curtain to the lugs. These depending lugs prevent the upper edge of the curtain vibrating violently enough to tear the curtain from the rivets carried by the supporter, as might be the case were these lugs dispensed with.
It will be noted that when the curtain is buttoned to the buggy top that the supporter is arranged above the buttons and will be arranged at such a height above these buttons as to be supported upon the shanks of the buttons, the buttons thus bearing the weight of the supporter so that the curtain will not be strained by this weight when the curtains are secured to the buggy top.
Referring to Fig. 3 it will be noted that in folding the supporter one of the outer sections is folded upon an inner section and then the mating outer section is folded bodily upon the folded outer section. By this manner of folding the supporter the curtain is folded from its outer edges inwardly upon itself and may then be wrapped about the folded sections forming a compact end roll for storing.
What is claimed is An attachment for vehicles comprising outer bars and an intermediate bar having interfitting hinge lugs at their confronting ends, said hinge lugs projecting from the same side faces of the bars, pivot pins passed through said interfitting lugs, the hinge lugs between one of said outer bars and the intermediate bar being elongated whereby the pivot pin carried by these lugs is disposed a greater distance from the adjacent side faces of the hinged bars than the pivot pin carried by the interfitting lugs of the other outer bar and intermediate bar, to permit of one of said outer bars being folded upon edge to said bars, and foldable upon itself 10 during folding movement of said bars.
In testimony whereof, We aflix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY T. SONDERUP. CHRIST T. SONDERUP.
