Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 5, 1911.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911. Serial No. 625,241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. PARHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moultrie, in the county of Colquitt and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plows.
An object of this invention is the provision of a plow, which consists of a series of pivotally supported disks which may be readily adjusted to any desired angle.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a plow consisting of a series of disks and a plow foot, the said foot being of such nature that it may be readily detached and placed either in advance or in the rear of the disks.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a plow which will be compara tively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.
YVith the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the U-shaped supporting member and disks; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view illustrating the manner of connecting the transverse beam to the longitudinal beam.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved plow, which comprises a main or longitudinally extending beam 2, upon the upper face, adjacent the rearmost extremity of which is secured a transverse beam 3. This transverse beam 3 is notched, as indicated by the numeral 4, for engagement with a notch 5 formed in the upper face of the beam 2, in which it is securely held by means of a U-shaped bolt 5, which surrounds the beam 2, with its terminals extended through apertures 6 formed in the transverse beam 3, in which position it is held against displacement by suitable looking nuts 7. The opposite ends of the beam 3 are apertured, as at 8, for the reception of vertically extending bolts 9, which retain upon the outer ends of the beam 3 U-shaped supporting members 10, the lower depending extremities of which are apertured, as at 11, for the reception of an axle 12, which retains in said U-shaped members disks 13. These disks are held upon the axles 12 against any sliding movement by suitable collars 1 1, which surround said axles with their ends resting upon the faces of the before-mentioned disks 13. The transverse beam 3 is held upon the beam 2 against any lateral displacement by suitable braces 15.
An operating lever 16 is pivoted to the intermediate portion of the beam 2, and has formed thereon a pair of depending arms 17, to the lower extremities of which are connected links 18, pivoted at their opposite ends to the inner extremities of the U-shaped supporting members 10, to provide a means whereby the same may be turned for the purpose of changing the angle of the disks 13. This lever 16 is held against any undesired displacement by means of a toothed segment 19, which engages a pawl carried by the lever 16, and operated through the medium of a hand grip 20.
Handles 21 are bolted, or otherwise secured, as indicated by the numeral 22, to the rear extremity of the beam 2 and braced by the medium of suitable rods 23, which connect the intermediate portions of the handles with the said beam 2 adjacent the lower ends thereof, while a shoe 2% supports, adjacent the rear extremity of the plow beam 2 a plow share 25. The upper end of the shoe 24 is bifurcated, as at 26, and apertured, as at 27, to provide means whereby the said shoe may be adjustably secured to the plow beam.
A standard 28 is secured to the forward extremity of the plow beam 2 in advance of the disks 13 in the same manner as the shoe 26 is retained thereon, and it will be obvious that when the said standard 28 is removed the plow shoe may be secured to that portion of the plow, which obviously places the same in advance of the disks 13 instead of in the rear thereof. The standard 28 is pivotally secured, as at 29, to the plow beam 2, while a bolt 30 passes through one of a series of apertures 31 formed in the forward extensions 32 of the standard 28, and through an aperture 33 located in the plow beam 2,
to provide a means whereby the roller 34: carried by the lowest extremity of the standard may be adjusted with respect to its distance from the plow beam 2.
Any suitable draft attachment 35 may be secured to the forward terminal of the beam 2 to provide a means whereby the plow may be secured to the traces or the like of a draft animal.
From the foregoing disclosure, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a plow is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A plow such as described comprising a longitudinally extending beam having a recess formed in the upper face thereof, a transversely extending beam mounted in said recess, a U-shaped bolt for connecting said beams together, a standard having a roller mounted therein for supporting the front end of said longitudinally extending beam, U-shaped members pivotally mounted on the said transversely extending beam and each side of the said longitudinally extending beam, a lever having two depending portions pivotally connected to said longitudinally extending beam, disks mounted in said U- shaped members, links connecting said U- shaped members with said depending portions of said lever, means for preventing the displacement of the lever, a plow shoe mounted on the rear end of said longitudinally extending beam and handles secured to the longitudinally extending beam whereby said plow may be operated, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
