Be it known that I, LOUIS N. Moss, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth- Measuring Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to afford simple but effective mechanism for measuring cloth and flexible material expeditiously and accurately, and it consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts clescribed and claimed.
Incidentally the invention embodies a trunnioned cloth-roll blade or support adapted to be thrust into the roll between the cloth and the spool board around which cloth is usually wrapped, and to act as a spindle therefor during the measuring operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a plan of my improved cloth measuring apparatus; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Figs. 3 and 4, detail views of the spindle blade; Fig. 5, a sectional diagram illustrating the position of the folding blade within a roll of cloth.
As ordinarily prepared by the manufacturer and delivered to the trade, cloth is wound around a flat spool board a. In adapting the cloth for measurement in my apparatus I insert between the inner fold of the cloth in the roll and the spool board a, a flat spindle blade Z), consisting of a thin plate of metal formed with convergent ends 6, terminating in trimnions 6 This spindle may be quickly introduced without inconvenience, the spool board a, acting as a guide for the blade, and the convergent ends Z), of the latter facilitating the operation. F, represents the supporting frame generally, the same being formed preferably of angle metal for lightness and strength. Mounted on and between the horizontal members f, f, of the frame is the driving shaft (Z, carrying the drum (2, the periphery of which is covered with a facing of cloth 02 Above the drum d, is mounted the contact roller 6, the periphery of which is also covered with a facing of cloth 6', as is also the periphery of the delivery roller 9, said facing being represented at g. This facing cloth is adhesively attached to all three of these cylindrical surfaces,i. 6., that of the drum cl, the contact roller 6, and the delivery roller 9, and prevents the slipping of the cloth while being measured, particularly between the opposed surfaces of the drum cl, and contact roller 6. Furthermore it does this without injury to the cloth being measured, and in this respect is much superior to a sanded or roughened peripheral surface, from which the measured cloth has to be stripped, which is apt to impair the surface of such measured cloth, especially when the latter is of fine texture and finish.
Another advantage attendant upon the use of facing cloth as a bearing surface on the drum cl, contact roller 6, and forwarding or delivery roller 9, is that such contact surfaces may be readily replaced when worn or damaged without the aid of skilled labor or resort to the machine shop,it being simply necessary to strip off the old covering and glue on a new one in place thereof.
The contact roller 6, is mounted in yielding bearing boxes 6 formed with side flanges which embrace guide ways h, h, on the bridge brackets 72., which are rigidly secured to the side members f, f, of the frame F. Cap plates 72, confine springs it between their under surfaces and the upper sides of the bearing boxes 0 so that the contact roller e, tends constantly to press against the periphery of the drum cZ. Hence the cloth to be measured when interposed between the cloth cont-act surfaces (Z and e, of the said drum 6Z7], and contact roller 6, respectively, is pressed and held firmly while being advanced, and slip, retrogression or irregularity is rendered practically impossible, particularly on the line of measurement, which is the line of contact between the drum d, and the contact roller 6.
A receiving roller i,andatension roller j, are situated between the drum (Z, and the spindle standards 0, 0, being mounted in suitable bearings on the side members 7, f, of the frame F. 0?, and between the latter and the contact roller 6.
My cloth measuring unachine is designed to be operated by hand as the surest means of maintaining control and attaining accuracy of measurement, and for this reason the driving shaft (Z, is provided with a hand crank (Z by which the drum CZ, maybe rotated.
A miter gear d onthe driving shaft (Z, meshes with a similar miter gear m, on a worm shaft w, supported in suitable bearings on the frame and extending at right angles to the driving shaft d. Parallel to the worm shaft w, is a guide rod n, rigidly supported and forming the guide and support for a traveling pointer 29, the under side of which is formed with one or more (preferably two) concave threads for engagement with the convex threads on the worm to, when the pointer 79, is swung over into contact with said worm. A parallel scale s, is arranged in conjunction with the worm shaft to, and pointer 79 and the threads on the worm shaft are of a pitch of prescribed relation to the diameter or peripheral surface of the drum (Z', so as to move the pointer 29, when in engagement, a prescribed distance for each revolution of the drum (Z, and this distance is subdivided on the scale s, to represent yards and fractions thereof.
The delivery-roller g, directs the cloth onto the folder board Q, which is pivotally suspended on the transverse rod 9, at the front of the frame. The folder board has a vibratory motion imparted to it by a pitman g connecting it pivotally with a crank pin 1 on the pulley wheel 1", which is actuated by the wheel d on the main shaft (Z, through the medium of the belt 7. The vibration of the folder board 9, causes the cloth to be deposited on the receiving platform t, in uniform folds.
In order to eflfectually control and render even the delivery of the cloth to the folder board 9, I drive the delivery roller 9, at a peripheral speed as great or preferably slightly greater than that of the drum cl, by means of a belt a, passing around said delivery pulley g, and over a driving wheel 16 on the main shaft (Z. By this means sufficient tension is imparted to the cloth to prevent undue sagging and to feed the cloth smoothly and evenly to the folder board 9.
In operation, a spindle blade Z), having been inserted as hereinbefore described into a roll of cloth to be measured, the trunnions b b dropped into the bearing slots 0, 0, of the standards 0, a, and the pointer p,having been raised from the worm w, if necessary, slid along the rod n, to the zero mark on the scale s, and again lowered into engagement with the worm w, the edge of the cloth :0, to be measured is then passed over the receiving roller 2', under the tension roller 7', and inserted between the contact roller 6, and the drum (Z. On the rotation of the drum d, by means of the handle (Z the worm to, immediately begins to move the pointer 29, along the scale s. The cloth w, passes from the cloth faced surfaces of the contact roller 6, and drum (Z, to the cloth-faced surface of the delivery roller 9, by which it is fed to the folder board q, and by the latter to the receiving platform t, WVhen the last of the cloth m, is unrolled from the spindle blade 6, the spool board a, drops into a compartment V, formed for its reception beneath and in front of the standards 0, c,such spool boards being available for further use and of sufficient value to warrant their preservation. The cloth facings on the drum cl, and contact roller 6, are sufliciently compressible, elastic and resilient to cause them to positively and effectually control the cloth under measure ment without straining or impairing it in the least.
My spindle blade 6, is essentially an unwind spindle to be inserted in a bolt of cloth between the wooden spool board and the inner fold of the cloth,the trunnioned and wedge-shaped ends of the flat metallic plate adapting it especially for this purpose, and the trunnions Z2 b fitting loosely within the bearing slots 0, 0, formed for their reception in the rear standards 0, 0, allowing the spindle to rotate freely to feed the cloth in a slack condition, practically without tension, to the feed and measuring rolls, &c.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In cloth measuring machinery of the character designated, an unwind cloth roll supporting spindle blade adapted to be driven into a cloth roll between the spool board and the cloth, said spindle blade consisting of a one-piece elongated metallic plate the body portion of which is flat, with convergent, wedge-shaped ends terminating in axial trunnions which fit loosely in slots in rear standards of said measuring machinery, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cloth-measuring machine of the character designated, the combination of rear standards formed with approximately vertical open-mouthed journal slots, a clothroll supporting spindle blade mounted thereon and consisting of a flat metallic blade formed with convergent ends and trunnions integral therewith fitting in said open-mouthed journal slots in the said standards, a receiving roll over which the cloth passes to a tension roll, said tension roll under which the cloth passes to the measuring drum, said measuring drum mounted on the driving shaft of the machine, a yielding contact roller opposed to said measuring driun, a delivery roller for receiving the cloth from the measuring drum, said delivery roller being driven from said driving shaft at a greater peripheral speed than that of the said measuring drum, and a vibratory folder board also driven from the said driving shaft, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. In a cloth-measuring machine of the character designated, the combination of rear standards formed with approximately vertical open-mouthed journal slots, a clothroll supporting spindle blade mounted thereon and consisting of a flat metallic blade formed with convergent ends and trunnions integral therewith fitting in said.
open-mouthed journal slots in the said standards, a receiving roll over which the cloth passes to a tension roll, said tension roll under which the cloth passes to the measuring drum, said measuring drum mounted on the driving shaft of the machine, a yielding contact roller opposed to said measuring drum, a delivery roller for receiving the cloth from the measuring drum, said delivery roller being driven from said driving shaft at a greater peripheral speed than that of the said measuring drum, a vibratory folder board also driven from the said driving shaft, a worm supported at right angles to the driving shaft and having a gear meshing with a gear on the driving shaft, said gear on the driving shaft, a scale and a pointer guide rod parallel to said worm, and a swinging pointer slidable on said guide rod, the under side of the pointer being female threaded to engage the worm thread, for the purpose and substantially in the manner set forth.
4. A cloth measuring machine comprising a trunnioned spindle blade on which the cloth to be measured is supported, slotted standards on which said spindle is mounted, a compartment below and in front of said spindle standards for the reception of the spool boards released from the spindle blade by the unwinding of the cloth, a receiving roller, a tension roller, a driving drum, a yielding contact roller opposed to said drum, a delivery roller, a vibratory folder board, a miter gear on the driving shaft, a miter gear on a worm arranged at angles to the driving shaft, said worm, a scale and a pointer guide rod parallel thereto, and a swinging pointer slidable on said guide rod and concavely threaded on its under side to engage with said worm, for the purpose and substantially in the manner described.
