UNITED sT rEs PATENT oFF cE.
CARL WOLTER, OF RIXDORF, NEAR BERLIN, GERMANY.
TRANSFER MECHANISM FOR THE FORWARD AND BACKWARD COUNTING DEVICE CALCULATING-MACHINES. i I
Application filed September 7, 1910. Serial No. 580,791.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL WOLTER, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Rixdorf, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transfer Mechanism for the Forward and Backward Counting Device of Calculating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the transfer mechanism for the counting device of calculating machines.
The mechanism according to this invention is of very simple construction.
It consists essentially of a sliding plate with a central opening and with two teeth, said sliding plate being controlled by a pull string. When the pulling direction is varied, owing to the lifting of a pawl operated from the counting device, the next numeral wheel is turned for one tooth in the one or in the other direction.
The improved mechanism is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mechanism, the parts which are not absolutely required to illustrate the invention, being omitted. Fig. 2 shows the principal parts of the mechanism in top view. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 represent the mechanism in different positions.
The transfer wheel 1 meshes in the well known manner with a spur wheel 2 which meshes in its turn with another spur wheel 3 serving as numeral wheel. The sliding plate 4 has at its end which is turned toward said spur-wheels two teeth 5, 6, a curved slot 7 with notch 8, a triangular opening 9, an oblongslot 10 and a curved extension 11. A pawl 12 of a lever which is pivotally mounted at 13 and which stands under the influence of a spring 14 normally engaged with said notch 8. The lower' end of lever 15 presents an angular projection 16, designed to cooperate with the roofshaped projection 17 of the spur wheel 2. The plate 4 is insured in its position by means of said pawl 12 and of a roller 19 engaging with the oblong slot 10, so that, if said pawl is withdrawn the plate can swing around the bolt 19. The oscillating movement of the plate 4 is limited by the roller 18 which engages with the triangular opening 9 of the plate. As can' be seen from Fig. 2 a similar mechanism is arranged between every two numeral or counting wheels.
The ends of the juxtaposed lever plates 4 are each connected with the 'rev'oluble y ke 21, by means of a spiral spring 20. A toothed wheel 22 is keyed upon the shaft of said yoke 21 and meshes with a toothed seg-" ment 23 of a hand lever 25 adapted to swing around its pivot 24. This hand lever 25 serves for moving the yoke 21 to one of the three positions a, b or 0 (Fig. 1) in order to modify the direction in which the pulling strain of the springs 20 is exerted upon the plates 4. A
Rollers 27 carried by a rod 26 abut against the curved extension 11 of the plates 4. This rod 26 carries at its free end a roller 28 adapted to come in contact with the slide which is not shown in the drawing. This slide of the calculating machine acts upon the roller 28 in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 1), the rod, after having been pushed in this direction, being pulled back by the spring 29.
The mechanism operates as follows :For the execution of adding operations the yoke 21 is in the position shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. When the mechanism is in the position Fig. 4 the rod 26 driven toward the left by the slide pushes with its roller 27 against the curved extension 11 and lifts the plate 4 from the position (Fig. 4) into the position (Fig. 1) so that the pawl 12 engages with the notch '8 of the plate maintainin the same in this position. The rod 26 %eing hereupon pulled back by its spring 29 the plate is free to move to the right under the influence of the pull spring 20until the roller 19 comes in contact with the left hand end of the oblong slot 10. The mechanism is in the position shown in Fig. 3, the teeth 5 and 6 and the angular projection 16 being situated quitec'lose to the counting wheels. When the toothed wheel 2 has revolved so'gthat its triangular or roofshaped nipple 17 comes in contact with the angular projection 16 it acts uponsaid projection and pushes the lever 15 back so that it oscillates; the pawl 12 is withdrawn from the notch 8. The plate is thus released and can swing .under the action of the spring 20 around the roller 19 so that the tooth 5 engages with the next higher toothed wheel 2 and revolves the same and consequently its numeral wheel 3 Patented ()ct. 10,1911.
for the space of one tooth. The mechanism has again assumed the POSltlOII F g. 4, from which it is brought to the positlon F g. 3 by the action of the driving slide as has been hereinbeforedescribed. For subtractions the yoke 21 has to be brought into the position 0 which is efiected by means of the hand lever 25, so that the pull spring 20 acts in opposite direction upon the plate 4 when the same is being released; the mechanism is thus brought to the position Fig. 5 where the tooth 6 acts upon the toothed Wheel 2 turning the same in opposite direction; otherwise the operation is exactly the same as has been hereinbefore described.
I claim 1. An improved transfer mechanism for calculating machines adapted to operate for additions or for subtractions, comprising in combination with the toothed driving wheel for the numeral wheel, a slidable plate having a curved slot with a notch, a triangular opening and an oblong slot, two oppositely directed teeth at the front end of said plate, a pawl lever pivotally mounted behind said plate, an angular projection of said lever located between said teeth, the nipple of the driving wheel of the counting mechanism adapted to act upon said angular projection of said lever, the pawl of the lever engaging with said notch of the plate and releasing the plate when the nipple acts upon said projection, a cam like extension of the plate having a curved surface, a sliding rod, a roller adapted to act upon said curved surface, an axle in said oblong slot of the plate serving as pivot, a yoke adapted to assume calculating machines adapted-to operate for additions or for subtractions, comprising in combination with the toothed driving Wheel for the numeral wheel, a slidable plate having-a curved slot with a notch, a triangular opening and an oblong slot, two oppositely directed teeth at the front end of said plate, an angular projection of said lever located between said teeth, the nipple of the driving wheel of the counting mechanism adapted to act upon said angular projection of said 1ever, the pawl of the lever engaging with said notch of the plate and releasing the plate when the nipple acts upon said projection, means for shifting said plate, a yoke adapted to assume two opposite extreme positions, and a hand-lever for bringing said yoke to the one or to the other, the addingor the subtractionposition, and a pull spring fixed with one end to said yoke and with the other end to said plate, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses. CARL WOLTER. Witnesses:
WOLDEMAR HAUPT, ARTHUR ScHRoEDER.
