Description

W. SOHRBIBR. WATER TUBE STEAM BOILER WITH TUBES OONNEGTING THE UPPER AND LOWER SHELLS. APPLICATION FILED OUT: 27, 1910.

COLUMBIA PLAN c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER SCHREIEB, F COTTBUS, GERMANY..
WATER-TUBE STEAM-BOILER WITH TUBES CONNECTING THE UPPER AND LOWER SHELLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALTER SGHREIER, head clerk, residing at 20 Griinstrasse, Cottbus, Province of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVater- Tube SteamBoilers with Tubes Connecting the Upper and Lower Shells, of which the following is a specification.
In steam boilers consisting of upper and lower shells and tubes connecting these shells the boiler plates are generally stepped ofi at the parts into which the tube ends are expanded, so as to facilitate such securing of the tubes. These steps are arranged either concentrically or on the backs of corrugations which are pressed out of the boiler plate and into each of which one row of tubes is expanded. Such shells with concentric corrugations or single steps afford, however, of a comparatively smallstrength only and may therefore not be employed for high pressure steam boilers.
According to the present invention, which relates to water tube boilers, the upper and lower shells of which are fitted in known manner with sockets into which the tubes are secured, the tube-plates of these sockets are made in form of steps rising toward the center. By giving these plates such shape they are converted into continuous girders of U- or Z-section, and afford a great strength against bending.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is exemplified in a constructional form.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a boiler to which the invention has been applied; Fig. 2, is an end view of Fig. 1 with the upper and lower shells shown in transverse section. Fig. 3 is a section through the tube plate of a socket and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the same, both on a larger scale than the preceding figures.
The upper and lower shells a and b are provided with sockets c and 03 into which Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 589,414.
the water tubes 6, e are secured. The tube plates 0 and (Z of the sockets c and d have been pressed out into steps as is evident from Figs. 8 and 4. These steps are parallel to each other and rise toward the center, and serve to receive one or several rows of tubes.
The peculiar arrangement of the steps allows of exchanging the tubes at will at any point, without the tubes in front having to be removed. The sockets 0' and (Z may, of course, also be made of any other section than the round section shown in the drawing.
I claim:
1. A boiler comprising upper and lower drums having openings therein, a series of tubes for connecting said drums, sockets projecting from said drums and surrounding said openings, and tube heads secured to said tubes and anchored to said sockets,
2. A boiler comprising upper and lower drums having openings therein, a series of tubes for connecting said drums, sockets projecting from said drums and surrounding said openings, and tube heads secured to said tubes and anchored to said sockets, said tube heads having stepped portions, substantially as and for .the purpose set forth.
3. Aboiler comprising upper and lower drums provided with openings therein, sockets surrounding the openings in said drums and secured to the walls of said drums at a relatively considerable distance outwardly from the margins of said openings, tubes connecting said drums, and tube heads secured in said sockets and anchored to said tubes.
In testimony whereof I hereto afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER SCHREIER.
Witnesses HENRY HASPER, VVOLDEMAR HAUPT.
