SPRING FASTENING DEVICE.
noossas.
Specification or Letters Patent.
Patented (lot. 10, 1911.
Application filed June 22, 190%. Serial No. 439,701.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SoHADE, J12, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring. Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invent-ion relates to improvements in spring fastening devices for electrical conductors, and the objects of the invention are to enable the conductor tobe firmly gripped and maintained in defined position in the device, to cheapen the cost of manufacture and enable the devices to be madeout of sheet metal or a combination of sheet metal and wire, and to provide a construction wherein the conductor may be ,inserted longitudinally into the. device and main.- tained in position.
There are many circumstances in which it is desirable to use a fastening device in which the conductor is inserted longitudinally instead of transversely, and my device, accomplishes this object as Well as other objects which will hereinafter appear.
To these ends the invention consists of a fastening device for carrying out all of the above objects embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements, and
arrangementof parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompany ing drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the wire inserted; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification; Fig. i is a s1milar view with the wire inserted; F1 5 I is a perspective view of another mo ification with the wire inserted; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modification with the wire inserted.
The fastening device is adapted to be secured to a base or support A and in this instance the device is shown secured fiat upon the support, although other means of supporting the device may be provided as desired, according to the nature of the Work for which the device is used.
In Fig. 1, the device comprises a singlerespect, for each device may comprise as many separate parts suitably secured. together, as may be desired.
In the modifications shown in the drawings, the device is constructed partly out of sheet metal and'partly out of wire, which is found to be economical and more durable under some circumstances and requires a machine simpler in some respects to manufacture than the machine for making the device in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 1, B represents the body member and G the spring member which is bent over the body member and is normally separated therefrom. The body member is bent longitudinally of its length to form an arch or rib and this rib is slotted transversely at D, leaving two upwardly projecting resistant portions E. The remainder of the body and spring members is preferably slotted longitudinally at F and the outer.
end of the spring member is provided with the wire engaging loop or bend G, which is pressed out of the metal and is adapted to pass into the slot D between the projecting members E, so that when a wire H is inserted longitudinally beneath the members E and through the wire engaging portion Gr, said wire will be gripped at at least three points of contact and held in position by the retractive force of the spring. The device is adapted to be secured to the support A. as by means of the screws J.
In Fig. 3, the body member is formed out of sheet metaland is bent or folded longitudinally along the line K to form an arch or rib into which the conductor is inserted lOlL:
gitudinally. This rib is provided with the slot L and the spring member is formed out of wire, the ends of which are secured in the sockets P on the body member. The outer end or loop Q, of the spring member forms the Wire engaging portion which is adapted to enter the slot L on the body member.
In Fig. 5 the construction is substantially like that in 3, except that less sheet metal is provided, and the main members R of the wire portion are made longer, so that the device is; lighter and cheaper to manufacture.
In Fig. 6, the body member S comprises a fiat sheet of metal having the sockets T for the ends of the spring member U. The other end of the body-member is provided with the hook or tongue V forming the rcsistant member. In this modification the conductor H is adapted to be inserted transversely instead of longitudinally, and the side loops of the spring member are adapted to pass on each side of the resistant member V. o
I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:
1. A spring fastening device, having a body member and a spring member, each provided with a transversely extending oppositely bent wire engaging portion adapted to receive and hold a conductor at at least threepoints of contact when said conductor is thrust longitudinally of. the device into.
said portions.
A spring fastening device, having a body member provided with an upwardly and longitudinally extending projecting resistant portion also extending transversely of the same, and a'spring member having a; transverse wire engaging portion adapted to cooperate with said resistant portion to clamp a conductor at at least three points of contact when said conductor is inserted longitudinally through the resistant portion and wire engaging portion.
3. A spring fastening device, having a body member bent longitudinally of its length to form an arch adapted to bridge the body member transversely, said arch having a transverse slot and a spring member having a Wire engaging portion extendbeing provided with a longitudinal rib open at one side and slotted transversely, the other having a projecting wire engaging portion adapted to cooperate with said rib to clamp a conductor at at least three points of contact in the same plane.
(3. A spring fastening device having a sheet metal body member provided with a transversely extending upwardly projecting resistant portion having a transverse slot, and a spring member formed out of wire and having a wire engaging loop adapted to enter said slot and cooperate with the said resistant portion of the body member.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specifieatioi'i in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
