Be it known that 1,. JOHN S. JULINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toilet-Paper Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this class of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
A further object of my invent-ion is to provide a device of this class with means combined with a single feed roller, for outting paper from a continuous roll of paper in one complete rotation of said feed roller,
and means combined with said feed -roller for cutting an opening substantially in the center of the portion or section of the paper cut as the feed roller is rotated.

The roll of paper 12 is mounted on the'roll 13 which is rotatably mounted 1n the sides 14C and 15 of the case by any suitable means. The feed roller 16 is rotatably mounted in the sides 14 and 15 of the case preferably belowthe roll 13.
The blades 18 for cutting the opening in the paper, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3, are constructed of steel, which is tsshaped in cross-section, and are mounted on the periphery of the feed roller 16 by means of bolts or screws 19 inserted through the openings in the ybase 20 of the blades. The cutting blade for cutting the opening may be cast in one piece in a cylindrical form, therefore, I do i not wish to limit myself to the specific form shown. v
The blade 25 for cutting the paper from the roll is constructed of steel and cast in one piece which is L-shaped in cross-section, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 7. The base 26 of the blade 25 is provided with openings for inserting a bolt or screw 27 for mounting the blade on the periphery of the feed roller 16. 'The upright portion of `the blade 25 is provided with a sharp edge 28, as best shown in Fig. 7, which serves as a cutting edge for cutting the paper from the roll which ooper-ates with the stationary blade presently .to be described. The blade 25 is cast `in one piece and is so formed that its cutting edges are set at an angle tothe axis of the feed roller. The Ablade 25 is mounted on the feed roller diametrically opposite to the point 29 on the side on which the blades 18 are mounted. It is essential that the cutting edges of the blades 18 and 25 be set at an angle to the axis of the feed roller in -orderthat the feed roller may have an opportunity to feedthe paper while it is being cut.

The feed roller 16 is covered on its surface at either end, with sand paper 37 or similar material for 1m- 20 parting to said roll a rough surface for properlyengaging the paper when said roller is being rotated. The spring member 38 is rigidly secured to the back portion 11 of the Vcase 10, at either end, and under the stationary blade by any suitable means, such as the bolts 39, and are so formed and positioned as to engage the paper on the feed roller 16, thus imparting a yielding pressure on said roll to hold the paper intact. It will be seen that the paper used in this device must be of sufficient width to it the ordinary stool in Water closets, therefore, in
the form of my invention shown and deshown and described a device'so designed as to cut the paper from the roll and an opening therein as the paper is fed from the roll in a single sheet.. In Figs. 8, 9 and 10 my toilet paper holder and cutter is shown in a form designed to be used in places where it is desired or is necessary to economize space, as for instance, Pullman cars and the like, and it is designed tocut the paper from the roll and an opening therein as the paper is fed ,from said roll fldedlaterally upon itself or in a double sheet. .In these figures the roll yof paper is made of paperof sufficient width to fit the ordinary stool in water' closets, which is folded laterally intermediate of its edges upon itself, thus forming a double sheet roll of one half the width of a single sheet roll made up of the same width paper. As in Fig. 1 the roll of paper is mounted on the roll 13 which is rotatably mounted in the sides 14 and 15. The blade 18 for cutting the opening in the paper is made of steel, which is L-shaped in cross sect-ion, and which is cast in one piece in a semi-cylindrical form and is mounted on -one side of the feed roller 16 near one end 18Bin vertical alinement with-v the edge of said feed roller, as shown in Fig. 8. The roll of paper 12 is mounted on the roll so that the folded edge 12 of the paper will correspond with the edges 18A and 18B ofthe blade 18. A cutting blade is mounted on the feed roller 16 diametrically opposite the point 29 of said feed roller similar to the 'blade 25 in Figs. `2 and 4. A stationary blade is rigidly secured to the side of the case. preferably in a plane parallel with the axis of the feed roller 16 similar to the blade .30.in Figs. 2 and 5. As the feed roller is Arotated the semi-cylindrical blade 18 cooperates with the stationary lblade thereby cutting the opening in the paper and as the feed roller is rotated, the cutting blade 25 coperates with the stationary blade 30 thereby cutting the paper from the roll.
The paper isJ fed from the roll downwardly under the feed roller and out the discharge opening as the feed roller is rotated and is discharged at the discharge opening in a folded position havin a out away portion 13a from one of its sides, as shown in Fig. 9. After the paper has been cut and passed out the discharge opening as above described and it is desired to use the same, the -paper is then folded outwardly and will be in the form shown in Fig. 10 having an Vopening 13B substantially in its center.

In practical operation and assuming that the parts are assembled as herein shown and described, a roll of paper is mounted on the roll 13 and the paper is then `passed downwardly between the feed roller 16 and the stationary cutting blade 30, thence downwardly under the feed roller 16 and between the spring member 38, thence downwardly through the discharge opening 41. When it is desired to turn out a supply of paper, the crank handle 40 is turned from right to left, thus rotating the feed roller 16. The blades 18 first cut the opening in the paper by cooperating with the stationary cutting blade 30 and the blade 25 cuts the paper from the roll 'by coperating with the stationary blade 30 as the feed roller is rotated, thus turning out a supply of paper having an opening substantially in its center.
Havlng thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a toilet paper holder and cutter, a
case having a discharge opening, a roll of opening, a roll of paper and a feed roller 'i for cutting the paper from said roll, and
site said cutting blade to cut an opening substantially in the center* of each portion cut from said roll, and means for rotating said feed roller substantially as and for the purpose described. l
3. In a toilet paper holder and cutter, an inclosing case having a discharge opening, a roll of paper and a feed roller rotatably mounted therein, a stationary cutting blade,
mounted in said case a cutter of zigzag form carried on said roller adapted to cooperate with said stationary blade for cutting the paper from the roll and a second blade mounted on said rollerA diametrically opposite to the blade for cutting the paper from the roll, and set at an angle to the axis opposite said zigzag blade and adapted to cut an opening substantially in the center of each portion cut from the roll. p
4. A toilet paper holder and cutter, comprising an inelosing case having a discharge opening, a roll of paper and a feed roller rotatably mounted in said case, a stationary cutting blade mounted in a position in said case parallel with the axis of said feed roller, cutting blades mounted on one side of said roll at an angle to the axis of said feed roller, in substantially a diamondshaped form, for cutting an opening in said paper, a cutting blade for cutting t-he paper from the roll mounted on said feed roller diametrically opposite the blades for cutting the opening, having its cutting edges set at an angle to theaxis of said feed roller, and means for rotating said yfeed roller substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. A ,toilet paper holder and cutter, comprising an lnclosing cas; having a discharge opening, a roll of pape-- and a feedrfroller rotatably mounted 1n sald case, a stationary cutting blade mounted` in a position in said case parallel with the axis of said feed roller, a cutting blade mounted on the surface of said feed roller having its cutting edges set at an angle to the axis of said feed roller and ada ted to coperate with the stationary cutting blade to cut' the paper from the roll, cutting blades mounted on the surface of said feed roller diametrically of said feed yroller and to eachother in substantially a diamond-shaped form and adapted to coperate with vthe stationary cutting blade for cutting an opening in the paper as the feed roller is rotated, and means for rotating said feed roller substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. In a toilet paper holder and cutter, a case havin a discharge opening, a roll of paper having the paper folded laterally upon itself rotatably mounted therein, a feed roller mounted in said case, a stationary cutting blade mounted in a position parallel with the axis of said feed roller, and means on said feed roller adapted to cooperate With said stationary cutting blade for 'cutting an opening in said paper and for cutting the paper from said roll, and means for rotating Said roll substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. A toilet paper holder and cutter, comprising an inclosing case having a discharge opening, a roll of paper consisting of paper laterally folded upon-itself, a feed roller mounted in said case, a stationary cutting blade mounted in a position parallel with the axis of said feed roller, a semi-cylindrical cutting blade mounted on the side and near one end of said/ roll adapted to cooperate with said stationary blade for cutting an opening in said paper, a cutting blade mounted on one side of said roll adapt-- ed to cooperate With said stationary blade for cutting the paper from said roll, and means for rotating said feed roller substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. A toilet paper holder and cutter, comprising an inclosing case having a discharge open1ng, a roll of paper having the paper folded laterally upon itself rotatably mounted in said case, a feed roller mounted in said case, a stationary cutting blade mounted in a position in, said 'case parallel with the axis of said feed roller, a cutting blade mounted on the surface of said ,feed roller having its cutting edges set at an angle to the axisofsaid feedl roller and adapted to coperate With said stationary cutting blade for'cutting the paper from the roll, a semicylindrical cutting blade mounted on one side of and near one end of said roll adapted to coperate with said stationary cutting blade for cutting the opening in the paper as the fee-d roller is rotated, and means for rotating said feed roller substantially as and for the purpose described. l
