To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. HERRIGK, residing at New 'York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Produeer Apparatus, of which the following is a specification; I

One of the objects of; the present inven- 3 tion is to provide new and improved means for discharging fuel into the body of a producer and distributin 'bed of fuel therein. Another object is to provide improved means for preventing the f rmation of crev- 20,ices or fissures in the mass.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts, which will be exem lified in the construction herein'aftei' descrlbed, and the scope of .the applicationof which will be indicated in the following claims.

. Referring now to the drawings, 1 representsthe base or setting of a producer, said base being hollowed out as at 2, to provide an ash receptacle and container for the wateremployed to seal the lower-end of the apparatus.

The producer, which in the present ii1- stance is ofcylindrical form is provided with a fixed. upper section 10, and a fixed lower section 11 between which is positioned a revoluble section 12,'which latter section is provided with wheels 13 adapted to traverse a supporting track 14 carried by the lower fixed section 11. VVaterseals 'as at 15 and 16 are provided between the fixed sections 10 and 11', and the revoluble section 12,and the latter is encircled by a member 17, provided with peripheral gear teeth 18.

In the present instance four of these apertures are provided, said apertures being formed between the legs 30 which rest upon the inner wall of the revoluble section 12. Partition 27 is provided with a central aperture 31 from which leads a conduit 32. This conduit is adapted for con-,
ducting gases from the. producer and eX- tends upward to the cover portion 33 and connects with a fixed discharge conduit 34 supported in any desirable manner above the producer. The top portion or cover 33 of the producer is mounted to revolve upon the top section 10, being supportedinthe present instance by means of ball bearings 36. A

The cover portion 33 is also providedwith an aperture 53 through which extends achute 54, said chutedepending into the interior of the producer. Leading into chute 54 is a hopper 55, said hopper and chute being provided with flanges 56 which rest upon an n 4 standing portion 57 of the cover. Exten ing downwardly through hopper 55 is a shaft 58 provided with a plurality of laterally extending members 60 which are received. bet-ween similar members 61 extending inwardly from the inner wall of the hopper. This shaft carries an apertured .plate62, the apertures of which are adapted to. register with "apertures formed in the plate 63 carried by the hopper. It will be seen that when shaft 58 is revolved the apertures of the plates 62 and 63 will be carried into and out of're istry whereby fuel will be periodically discharged through the chute 54 intoth'e producer. Shaft 58 is rotated asv by means of a gear wheel 64 which meshes with the teeth formed upon the stationary gear 65 carried exteriorly of the fixed conduit 34. A funnel 66 may be employed for discharging fuel into the hopper through an aperture 67 in the cover 68,

Having thus described the construct-ion of this embodiment of my inventi-om-the operation may now. be understood! The fuel which is introduced -into theproducer by means of the'shopper 55*"and chute 54 is evenly distributed upon'the' bed therein by the latter, owing to the fact thatthe same is carried by the cover and rotatesindependently thereof; the poker 41 operating'constantly to stir the mass and maintain the slime free from. crevices or fissures;
When the apparatus is in operation the intermediate'portion 12 is rotated as well as the cover portion, as has been above described. The blast which is received through an extension 70 passes downward through the mass to meet the gases passing upward to, meet the gases formedi-in the lower porases mix in the conduit 32, prior to being discharged from the producer.
Referring to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 2, the upper portion 71 of an up-draft producer is illustrated; the gases being carried oil as by means of a discharge pipe 72. A hopper 78 and chute 74 deliver the fuel into the interior of the producer, apertured plates 75 and 76 being provided as in the embodiment above described. The apertured Pia-1164 5 however, is carried by stationary shaft 7'7 having the laterally extending member 78, while the apertured plate 76 is carried by the hopper. The hopper is provided with peripheral teeth SOwvith which meshes an idlerSl, the latter meshing with a circular rack 82 located above the producer. A poker similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1 is shown at 83, the hollow shaft .84 of which. carries a gear wheel 85, the latter meshing with the idler 86 which in turn meshes withlhe circular rack 82. The cover portion is driven bymeans of the shaft 87 carrying a gear wheel 88 which meshes with peripheral teeth 90 formed upon the edge of the cover portion.

6. The combination of a gas producer having a revoluble cover portion, and an independent axially revoluble fuel hopper carried thereby.
7. The combination of a gas. producer' having a revolublecover portion, an independent axially revoluble fuel receptacle carried by the cover portion, and axially revoluble means for agitatingthe fuel within said fuel receptacle.
